FTEC, Monday, January 28 - Day Shift

The nurses were fighting. It wasn't every day they had a patient to take care of. A male patient. A hot male patient. So unsuprisingly, there were several arguments about who got to check on said patient, take his vitals, change his bandages, fluff his . . . pillows.

True to his word, Sam was back at the clinic first thing in the morning. But he hadn't gone near Dean's room, except to peek in and make sure that his dad was still there. He wasn't sure if Dean would want to see him after what happened - honestly, he wasn't sure if his dad would either - and for the moment, it seemed safer to stay out here and wait.

Peter had listened to the radio podcast that morning and wasted no time getting to the clinic. It was okay that Sam wasn't with Dean. Sam was exactly who Peter was looking for.

"Sam, Jesus - are you okay?"

Sam turned at the sound of his name, and was surprised to see Peter.

"I--yeah, I'm okay," he said. The fact that his hand was bandaged and he looked like he hadn't slept at all might have said otherwise.

Peter was a Petrelli. That meant his first instinct was to reach out to touch Sam and check to see if he was really okay. So that was going to happen if Sam didn't move away. "Yeah, you look it. What the hell happened? Has anybody seen to you yet?"

John came out into the lobby intent on calling Sam and telling him that Dean was awake only to find him already there. "Hey," he said with a smile. "Good timing. He's awake."

"He is?" Sam asked, sounding a little hopeful. "Is he okay?"

"He told me to go home before Zoe starts foaming at the mouth," he said with a faint wry smile. "I was just coming to call you."

Dawn was a little later than Sam, but she'd had to stop and get coffee for Sam and his Dad and herself before she showed up.

She silently handed him a cup before sitting down in the chair next to him, okay with not talking if he wasn't ready yet.

God, she hated hospital waiting rooms.

Sam wasn't quite ready to talk, still too filled with guilt about her getting hurt. But he took the coffee gratefully, and put his arm around her as she sat.

She leaned against him, resting her head against his shoulder and arm. It wasn't nearly doing nearly enough for him, in Dawn's opinion, but it would do for a start.

Dean had slept the night through while John sat at his bedside and watched over him.

It was early morning when Dean finally opened his eyes, half surprised to find himself still alive. "Dad?" he said hoarsely.

"Hey," John said, smiling at him, relieved to see him awake. "How are you feeling?"

Later in the morning, Sam finally went to Dean's room, and stood quietly in the doorway, where he could easily leave again if it seemed that Dean wanted him to.

Dean had his eyes closed, but could sense someone watching him. He opened his eyes and smiled faintly. "Sammy. Hey."

Meg hadn't slept much during the night, especially after she heard radio, but after she woke up from what little sleep she had she headed down to the clinic.

She almost had a mini-heart attack when she walked into the room and saw him but quickly reminded herself that it could have been much, much worse.

Dean was a little startled to see Meg there, but managed a smile. "Hey. Aren't you supposed to be in class?"

At one point during the morning, Dawn poked her head in just to make sure Dean was still breathing, even if he wasn't awake to talk.
