FTEC, Monday, January 28 - Day Shift

The nurses were fighting. It wasn't every day they had a patient to take care of. A male patient. A hot male patient. So unsuprisingly, there were several arguments about who got to check on said patient, take his vitals, change his bandages, fluff his . . . pillows.

Peter couldn't help but stare at him. "Well... not exactly," he said, as kindly as he could manage.

"Yeah, I guess we didn't really know what to expect in the end," Sam said miserably. "We thought we could keep anyone from getting hurt."

"Shame you didn't know somebody with self-healing and extra powers who could've helped you with that," Peter said, dryly.

Sam gave Peter a strange look, until he realized what Peter was getting at, and sighed. "You had so much going on last week, after the weekend, and with Ronan. I wasn't about to bug you with this."

"Yes, because the life and death of your family, not to mention my best friend, is nothing compared to my teenage angst," Peter said, rolling his eyes. "Sam, you're a moron. My best friend, but a moron."

Sam's normally stubborn tendencies were being overshadowed by all of his guilt, so instead of arguing with Peter, Sam just looked away from him, and picked at his bandage. "I'm sorry," he said quietly.

"Oh shut up," Peter said, without any signs of rancor. Then, because it deserved repeating, he added, "Moron."

He went to put an arm around Sam. "C'mon. I'm here now. What can I do?"

Sam's instincts were telling him to move away before he got Peter hurt too, but being comforted like he was felt too nice. "There's nothing you can do," he said. "It's all over. The demon's left."

"I can tell. You look so happy," Peter said, deadpan. He went to give Sam a hug. "C'mon. Wanna grab a seat somewhere? Maybe decompress?"

Sam couldn't help but let himself relax a little into the hug, and he was quiet for a few moments before nodding. "Sitting down might be good."

"You got it." Peter looked around until he found an empty exam room that was far enough away from Dean that Sam wouldn't worry about disturbing him. "Here. Sit. Need water or anything?"

"No, I'm okay," Sam said, sitting down obediently. Putting him far from Dean didn't exactly keep his brother off of his mind. "I just want everyone else to be okay too."

"I could take a look at Dean later if you want," Peter said. Of course so could all the other healers on the island, who by definition could do whatever Peter could only with more practice, but Peter thought maybe Sam needed to hear the offer.

It was definitely an offer Sam appreciated at the moment, all things considered.

"That would be really great," he said. "I know the two of you get along, and...I don't know if he's going to want me checking up on him all the time."

"He's your brother," Peter said. "When I was in the hospital you couldn't pry Nathan out of the room with a crowbar."

"Yeah, but it wasn't Nathan's fault you were in the hospital," Sam pointed out. "So you wanted to see him."

"Hey, back up," Peter said, gently. "How was any of this your fault?"

For a second, Sam thought about trying to take his words back. But he couldn't bring himself to lie to Peter, not with how close they were.

"The demon wasn't here because of Grace," he said. "He was here for me."

"He can't have you," Peter said, automatically. Then he became puzzled. "What do you mean? Like to possess you?"

"He said he's been watching me. He knows about my visions and...he said he has plans for me, and that there are others like me, other kids like..." Sam's hands were shaking as he tried to keep his composure, but the more the words poured out, the closer he got to losing it. "He said my mom and Dawn were in the way, that they were collateral...he killed my mom because of me and he tried to kill Dawn and he almost killed Dean and..."

"Hey, hey - " Peter said, gently. He reached out to put one hand over Sam's hands, the other around Sam's back in a hug. "He's a demon. Of course he's going to say bad things. And even if any of that was true it didn't work this time. Dawn's okay, Dean'll be okay, and you're still here. And whatever plans he's got for you can go screw."

"But don't you get it? If it wasn't for me, my mom would be alive. Dad wouldn't be hunting. Dean would be safe. They'd all be fine, and they're not, and it's because of me." He was too far gone to stop the tears, or the shaking, even with Peter's arm around him. "I knew there was something wrong with me. I knew it."

"Like hell there is," Peter said. He pulled Sam into a tight hug. "Sam, if the demon had gone after Grace instead of you, would you blame her for Dean right now? If he'd gone after me would you blame me?"

Logic wasn't something Sam was dealing with well at the moment, but he still shook his head. "Of course not."

"It's not your fault, Sam," Peter said, not letting go anytime soon. "You didn't ask for this to happen."
