FTEC, Monday, January 28 - Day Shift

The nurses were fighting. It wasn't every day they had a patient to take care of. A male patient. A hot male patient. So unsuprisingly, there were several arguments about who got to check on said patient, take his vitals, change his bandages, fluff his . . . pillows.

John came out into the lobby intent on calling Sam and telling him that Dean was awake only to find him already there. "Hey," he said with a smile. "Good timing. He's awake."

"He is?" Sam asked, sounding a little hopeful. "Is he okay?"

"He told me to go home before Zoe starts foaming at the mouth," he said with a faint wry smile. "I was just coming to call you."

"Zoe was pretty worried when I came home without you guys, but I told her what happened, so she knows you're okay now."

"I'm sure if it wasn't for Grace, she'd have been here last night herself," John said with a fond smile.

"I think she would have been too," Sam said. "She's still pretty worried."

"I should go reassure her," John said, but he was determined not to leave Dean alone. "You going to stay with your brother?"

"You're pretty much the first thing he asked about," John told him.

"I was?" Sam asked, unable to keep from sounding a little surprised.

"You were. And that isn't exactly unusual for Dean."

"What happened last night isn't exactly usual for him," Sam replied.

"That doesn't mean Dean's not Dean," John told him. "You're always the top of the list of what he's concerned about."

"Even when he nearly gets killed because of me?" Sam asked. "How are you feeling, by the way? Did the demon hurt you?"

"I'm fine," John said, completely ignoring any of the feelings lingering from the possession. That was for him to deal with; Sammy had enough on his plate already.

"Sorry about the whole near tackle," he said. "It was necessary for the charm to work. It had to touch skin."

"I told you last night, you did good, Sam. I meant it."

"Thanks," Sam said, managing a light smile. He was quiet for a moment before looking back up at his dad. "Were you...do you...how much of last night do you remember?" he asked.

"All of it," John said as neutrally as he could.

Sam tried to not focus for too long on how horrible that must have been. "Do you know how much of what the demon said was a lie?"

"I know that he said a lot of things that weren't true," John said. "He knew exactly what to say to get to you boys."

"Like the fact that he was here because of me?" Sam asked.

John sighed. "I don't know," he said honestly.

"I don't know," John said again. "But I promise you, Sammy, I won't let him get to you."
