FTEC: Monday Evening

Katara was a little surprised - and happy - there weren't more people in the clinic.  Somehow she'd expected more after watching some of the people fight Hades, but then most of them were dumb and didn't get anyone to check them out.  She may have been making a mental note of who to scold later.

Harriet kept looking at him, then sighed. "I'm not going to send you away, Andrew. I give you my word." Apart from anything else, she couldn't keep an eye on him if was somewhere else. "Your friends, a lot of people, were hurt, and you do bear responsibility for that. But Hades," her eyes got very cold, "has a way of twisting people around." Surprisingly gently, she said, "Why don't you tell me what happened, from the beginning, and we'll go from there."

It took a moment for it to sink in that he wasn't going to have to leave, and when it did, Andrew started to cry.

"I was in the woods," he began, "practicing." He swallowed. "I was summoning a demon and Hades walked up on me."

He paused to see if this bit of information would change Harriet's mind.

She fetched him a box of tissues and placed it gently next to him on the bed. He was just a child, no matter what he'd done, and she couldn't help but pity him. "No more summoning demons is the first new rule," she told him firmly. "He must have been thrilled."

If she could have, she'd have dragged Hades back up out of the Underworld and have flayed before sending him back.

"He said I had talent," Andrew said. "That I could help him out, and by helping him out, he would, ah, help me." He was ashamed to admit that he had done all this for fortune -- that he had hoped to somehow buy happiness.

She closed her eyes briefly, rubbed her forehead. It was better than hearing that he'd simply wanted to end the world, but not by much. "The two oldest temptations: power and flattery. And you succumbed, and agreed to help him." How could the boy have been so stupid? "Do you have any idea what would have happened to you had Hades succeeded?"

"He was an administrator," Andrew replied. "Why shouldn't I have trusted him?"

She was getting a headache. "The most likely scenario was that once he'd gotten what he wanted from you, he'd have killed you," she said bluntly. "And for future reference, if an administrator of this school is attempting to open a gateway to hell, do not trust them."

"Well I know that now," he said defensively.

He looked down. "I just wanted to be happy. I didn't... I didn't think."

"No, you didn't," she agreed. "But at least you realise that now." She sighed again. "All right, this is what we're going to do. You are not going to leave the island. Once you leave the clinic, you will stay confined to your dorm room apart from work, classes, and necessities like eating and showering. You will have a private detention with me every Friday." She paused. "If anyone, and I mean anyone - teacher or student - attempts to harass you because of your involvement, you will report it to me immediately."

Andrew nodded slowly. He should have realized this was coming.

"Can I have friends in my room?" he asked.

"You may, so long as you follow the other rules," she told him. "And we will reassess the situation in a few weeks."

"Okay." It was better than the alternative. At least this way he could stay.

"Thank you," he said.

"You are my responsibility, Andrew. I don't give up on them, ever." Harriet pressed one hand briefly against his shoulder, and stood. "Now, do you need anything before I leave?"

"No, ma'am," he replied. "I think I'll just sleep now."

"Good. It's the best thing for you right now. I'll make sure someone looks in on you." Harriet looked him over, nodded once, then left as quietly as she'd arrived.
