Scully had awoken cranky, but determined. Time to get to the bottom of her transformation!

She stomped off into town, and shot at two teal deer who tried to stop her from going inside the clinic. She took a sample of their blood as they limped away. (And drank some of it, but not from the sample. You had to keep your materials separate to avoid contamination.)

The nurses were staying waaaay on the other side of the Clinic from her, as she worked on her tests.

"Thith ith ridiculuth," she muttered through her just-starting-to-emerge fangs, as she broke yet another beaker. Really, those things didn't grow on trees!

Then she was absorbed in Science again.

"Promithe!" Scully held up three fingers, and sighed. "Not thirsty. Working on the control thing." She held up the needle. "You can watcth. Roll up your sleeve."

"Fine, fine," he grumbled, doing as she asked. "No funny business..." he trailed off, expression going blank again as someone else's thoughts caught his attention.

Scully carefully extracted his blood, and then stared as he remained zoned out. "Toby?" She snapped her fingers at him. "You in there?"

"She shouldn't have done that," Toby murmured. "Gonna leave a mark."

Scully watched him curiously as she prepped the slide. "Who did what now?" She leaned over and poked him with a pointy finger. "Details!"

Lacking in tact: check.

"I don't think it was very smart to taunt something with teeth as big as fingers," was Toby's terribly helpful explanation.

Euuuurgh. And this reaction is brought to you by someone growing fangs.

"Your cells are mutating," Scully said thoughtfully. "And maybe you're getting mentally weird too. Like, well. Me."

"I'm already mentally weird," Toby imparted. And oh boy, was he going to hate himself if Scully happened to remember that after this mess was over.

Understandably. Hopefully when this was all over Scully wouldn't be so fatally blunt.

"Hunh. So would you say you're weirder, or just have more of an impulse to share it now?"

"I think scales qualify as weirder, don't you?" Toby mused. "It's more- everyone else is sharing with me now. More than usual."

Scully gave him an inquisitive look. "They're giving you-- what? Hallucinations?"

Are you calling her scales weird, Toby? These are amazing scales. Also, I'm sure my tail will be very nice once its fully grown.

"I'm glad you're happy with your tail," Toby said placatingly, not even really aware that he'd responded to her thought rather than spoken words. The line between the two was becoming increasingly blurred, especially since he didn't seem to be able to shut anything out anymore.

"I didn't say that I was happy about it, I just thought it would be nice..." Scully paused. Even half-crazy and wildly hungry in an undefined way, she was good at picking up solid facts. "THOUGHTS. You're reading minds! Ahhhhhhh."

"Not on purpose," Toby scowled. "There's too many voices. All at once. Don't want it. Tried to shut it out. Not worki..." and his focus was gone again, attention caught by something happening outside the clinic's walls.

Scully snapped her fingers again, and poked his hand. "Toooooby. Stay with me!" she ordered. Interesting that his telepathy was enhanced; maybe they could distill the essence of the rock down into

SUPER POWER INVIGORATING MEDICINE!

I will keep thinking loudly at you, so you stay right here. So there.
