Scully had awoken cranky, but determined. Time to get to the bottom of her transformation!

She stomped off into town, and shot at two teal deer who tried to stop her from going inside the clinic. She took a sample of their blood as they limped away. (And drank some of it, but not from the sample. You had to keep your materials separate to avoid contamination.)

The nurses were staying waaaay on the other side of the Clinic from her, as she worked on her tests.

"Thith ith ridiculuth," she muttered through her just-starting-to-emerge fangs, as she broke yet another beaker. Really, those things didn't grow on trees!

Then she was absorbed in Science again.

"It is very aggressive, both in the speed that the infection spreads through the body and how it resists healing," Raven said quietly. With Triela's injuries, they were just too severe for her to heal without possibly dying herself, but this, this she should be able to heal if it didn't come back again so fast.

"Is there any way we can place people in stasis to slow the progression?" she wondered idly. It was not a pleasant thought, but better than the alternative.

"I don't know. We'd need a lot of ice to do it--" She sent Raven a significant glance to let her know just what--or who--she meant. "Unless the clinic has other facilities?"

"I do not know," Raven said, glancing around them. "I have never spent much time in this place." Mainly just when Triela had been there.

"I am frustrated because I do not know what more we can do now for those who are infected," she said, giving voice to her discontent. "I want to help them so much, but we cannot even slow the progression of the illness. We must find the source of this and stop it."

Karla nodded, tugging Raven close for another hug. "Unfortunately, our adversary is a rock," she reminded. "I have no idea how to beat a rock. But the answer is not shoving it in your netherverse."

Just in case there was any doubt.

"Darkness only knows what that would do to you."

"If it would protect you and Warren and Professor Skywalker and everyone else, I would do it," Raven said, hugging her back. Not that she was planning on it; it would be a last resort kind of thing.

She didn't want to imagine what that kind of corruption would do to her from within, though.

"We don't know if it would," Karla said quietly. "But we do know that if you touch it, you'll turn. And Darkness only knows what will happen to you after that."

But they knew those infected wanted to spread the infection. And Raven, with the ability to teleport anywhere...

"No."

Just call her Typhoid Raven?

"I have taken the infection into myself already and it has not sickened me," Raven pointed out. At least not that she'd noticed; she could be healing herself so rapidly she might not know it.

But she didn't want to argue in favor of taking the evil rock into her Soul-Self -- at least not yet -- so she nodded. "I will not do so," she promised. "But I want to do something."

"You and me both," Karla said, trying once again to think of something, anything they could do. It was like bailing out a sinking ship with their bare hands. "We don't have enough information, that's the problem. And unless we figure something out, I don't know what's going to happen to those who are already infected."

"Maybe there is more to be learned from the rock," Raven said, chewing on her lip. She wasn't sure who she'd picked that habit up from, but Fandom made her do it far too often.

"But to investigate it risks infection. What about the land around it? It has become corrupted as well, has it not?"

"Darkness, yes," Karla groaned, shifting her shoulders to loosen the knots in them. "I tried to heal that, too. It resisted, just like the illness in people." She blew her bangs out of her face. "Maybe I would have had a better chance if I'd had more time, but then a giant thingy decided I looked delicious. I had to explain to him I was anything but."

Raven had shifted one hand to Karla's shoulder, drawing the ache out of her muscles there. That, at least, she could do. But at her next words, she was gripped by sudden fear. "Karla!" she said. "You should not have gone out alone to do this! What if you had been infected as well?"

"I was shielded!" Karla protested.

"...Eventually."

See Raven's sad face, Karla. Look at the wibbling you are making her do!

"Please, promise me you will not do such a thing again?" she pleaded.

Damn it. Karla caused Raven-wibbles. Now she felt guilty. "I promise," she said, hanging her head. "I didn't mean to," she mumbled.

"I know you did not," Raven said, squeezing Karla tightly. "I just do not know what I would do if you were to fall ill as well."

"Totally lose her shit" might be an apt description.

"I won't," Karla said, completely ignorant of how stupid she would be in a few hours. "I can't afford to endanger myself, I know. There's too much riding on me staying well."

Raven better never find out about that, Karla. Or she would never hear the end of it.

Except Raven was a huge hypocrite and would have done almost the exact same thing if she'd been in Karla's place.

"We should know better than to return to Fandom in August," she said lightly. "Things like this always seem to happen." Granted, not as awful as two years ago, but still.

Karla nodded, trying to find a bit of comfort in that. Things got awful. But they always got better, too. Surely this time would be no different.

"Thanks, Raven. I needed to hear that."

More than she'd known.
