FTEC, Thursday (8/4)

Scully had awoken cranky, but determined. Time to get to the bottom of her transformation!

She stomped off into town, and shot at two teal deer who tried to stop her from going inside the clinic. She took a sample of their blood as they limped away. (And drank some of it, but not from the sample. You had to keep your materials separate to avoid contamination.)

The nurses were staying waaaay on the other side of the Clinic from her, as she worked on her tests.

"Thith ith ridiculuth," she muttered through her just-starting-to-emerge fangs, as she broke yet another beaker. Really, those things didn't grow on trees!

Then she was absorbed in Science again.

So Ronan hadn't actually quite made it to the clinic yesterday -- too much wizardry in the park, fighting the... things... had him conking out at home. Today, however, despite having to cut a deer or two in half on his way in, he was well-rested and ready to heal anyone who needed it.

Yes, Scully, he's looking at you.

"Um, hi," Angelica said nervously, after finally convincing herself to come down to the clinic. The grey patches on her skin weren't going away, and the stories on the radio were scaring her.

"I think I need to see a doctor," she said.

"I can certainly help you with that," Ronan said. He picked up a clipboard from the desk. "Have you been into the clinic before? Or should I start a new chart for you?"

Angelica shook her head. "I've never been here before," she said, looking around a bit anxiously. She had a justified fear of clinics and hospitals due to the horror stories about mutants being contained in them in her world.

Ronan nodded, grabbing a blank patient information and smiling reassuringly. "I'm Ronan Nolan. I'm not a doctor, technically, but I am a qualified magical healer. If you'll just follow me back here to the exam rooms?"

"I'm Angelica, Angelica Jones," Angelica said.

Wait. "Magic?" she said, following after Ronan.

Ronan nodded, opening the door to the exam room for Angelica. "I'm a wizard," he explained. "And a former Fandom High student. I worked here in the clinic when I was at the school, too, and then after I graduated I travelled the galaxy for a while, doing internships at several different clinics on different worlds, so I've got a background both in magical and standard medicine."

"Can you fix this, please?" Angelica said hopefully, pushing up her sleeve and showing him her arm. It was more grey than pink now, worse than it had been just a few hours ago.

Well didn't that look familiar. If much less advanced than certain other cases SCULLY that Ronan had seen today. "I can certainly try," he said. "It looks like this is something that's going around the island."

Yeah, this was going to be one he used the wizardry for. "This may tingle a little," Ronan explained, calling up his usual diagnostic spells. "What I'm doing is using a spell that gives me a... kind of a picture, an overlay on my vision, that gives me more detail about what's going on with your body. Shouldn't feel like much more than some light pins-and-needles along your arm, if anything at all."

"OK," Angelica said, moving her other hand to fidget with the gold bracelet around her wrist. "I don't mind if you can just make it stop."

She'd seen Scully on her way in and she didn't want to end up like that.

The scans were... interesting, to say the last. The 'rhumba' Scully had described in her own cells seemed to be happening here, as well. "If this weren't so disturbing, it would be fascinating," Ronan muttered, squinting at Angelica's arm. "Okay, I think I know what I can try. I need to ask, though -- looking at your genetics, do you have powers of some variety? I don't know what word you'd use for it on your world." There was something -- mostly in the healthy tissue -- that wasn't quite what Ronan would call familiar, but looked like a stable mutation of some kind.

Angelica gave him a wide-eyed stare, glad there wasn't someone like him back home who could spot mutants so easily. "Um, yes," she admitted. "I'm a...uh, a mutant." It still wasn't easy for her to say that even though she knew it was save to talk about here.

"I can control microwave radiation." Which was how Ms. Frost had explained it to her. It sounded better than "I light fires."

"Huh, that's a new one," Ronan said idly. "In the sense of being a power I'm unfamiliar with, that is, and it's not like I'm an expert." In the air between them, a softly glowing circle, about two feet across, began to lay itself out, the spidery characters of the Speech forming circles within circles as Ronan began laying out the parameters of his intended healing spell. "Now, it looks like what's happening is some kind of... hybridised additional mutation? Hybrid in the sense that something's changing your cells, but it seems to be leaving other aspects of your genetics intact: for example, the structures controlling your natural mutation. In a sense, this is actually a good thing: an actual illness or infection is... difficult for my kind of wizardry to heal, for reasons that are rather too complicated to get into. In this case, there seems to be some kind of external force exerting itself on some of the island's inhabitants."

Ronan reached up and began manually moving pieces of the spell around, expanding one of the loci, shrinking another. The spell responded to his touch, glowing stronger when his fingers were moving through it. "Can you think of anything that may have exposed you? Any strange encounters over the past few days?"

"Monday I was at work at the Gig," Angelica said, staring in fascination at the glowing circle. "I had to chase an alot out of the corral. It was acting weird, and it scratched me a little, but it wasn't bad at all." Or so she'd thought.
