Adah was a little surprised to come in and find out that they actually had a patient in residence today; her disappointment, however, that she was unconscious and all Adah had to do was keep an eye on her, make sure she was getting her fluid, and check up on any progress in her stats was significant. Checking on Dawn occasionally, Adah mostly reviewed her file at the desk, going over again and again in her head what she'd do if the other girl woke up, obsessively planning her attack so that there weren't any holes, wasn't a single chance that she'd need to call another doctor for help.

For the comatose one to....be comatose, and stuff.

Dawn hadn't moved at all since she'd been put into the bed the night before and showed no signs of immediate waking.

Sam was there, looking like he'd spent the night sitting in his chair. Since, you know, he had. He was still holding Dawn's hand, and searching her face for any sign that she might wake up soon.

After catching the end of radio, Mel headed over to the clinic first thing in the morning.

"Hey," she said to Sam as she came into the room. "What happened? Is she going to be okay?"

"Hey Mel," Sam said. "She--she's going to be fine. She's just not waking up at the moment."

Mel looked over at her friend and breathed a sigh of relief. "Any idea what happened to her?"

"I think it was a demon," Sam admitted.

"On the island..."

Mel swore under her breath. "Got any details? Or was this just something random."

"The demon that killed my mother is here," Sam explained. "We had a pretty good idea it was coming, but not yet. Not now, not like this."

"Anything I can patrol for or look out for?" Mel asked.

"I wish I could give you specifics," Sam said. "If you see anyone out of the ordinary, anyone who looks like they're new to the island...it might be him."

At one point, during a routine check-up to see how Dawn was doing and if there were any changed, even subtle ones, in her condition, Adah noticed that Sam had woken up. She spared him a slight glance, a tilt of her head, an unspoken question of if he needed anything while she jotted the conclusion of the check-up down on Dawn's file. She'd like to say that didn't care if he did; she'd like to be entirely cynical about the fact that discomfort was something he deserve for being one of those idiots who did things like stay beside comatose people who didn't even know they were there, but something, most likely that whole fact that she was still human despite her best efforts, didn't allow it and she actually did kind of mean it.

Sam was rubbing some of the sleep out of his eyes when he caught Adah's glance. Dawn may have been comatose, but he couldn't fathom being anywhere else right now, not wanting her to be alone if she woke up. When she woke up.

He gave Adah a grateful look when he saw that she'd done a checkup, but then all of his focus went back to Dawn. All he needed was for her to be okay again.

Well, on the bright side, since Sam's attention had all gone right back to the patient, he probably didn't catch Adah rolling her eyes and shaking her head as she recorded down one last thing. She double-checked the levels on the IV, wrote something else down, and limped back out to get back to the front desk.

Luke was there as soon as he'd managed to get a suddenly clingy Vladdie off of his leg.

Chewing on his lower lip as he looked at Dawn, he finally asked, "Need me to grab you some food?"

Because of course Sam wouldn't be leaving.

Sam gave Luke a grateful look before shaking his head. "No, that's okay. I'm not really hungry," he said.

"You can't live on just coffee," Luke scolded softly, but his eyes were sympathetic. "Any idea what happened?"

"I think so," Sam said. "The demon that killed my mom...we think it might have come back."

Luke hissed in a breath. "Would that explain why Vladdie's freaking out?"

Sam nodded. "Scout and Hunter have been acting weird too. Animals are better than humans at picking up on this sort of thing. I'm sorry."

"Don't be," Luke assured him, perching on a seat. "Is there anything you want me to do? I can check in on Scout..."

"That would be great, actually," Sam said, managing a small smile at Luke. "I just don't want to leave Dawn. I don't want her to be alone when she wakes up."

"I've been through this a few times," he admitted ruefully. "I understand."

"I think I could go for a very long time without ever going through anything like this again," Sam said.

Luke reached a hand out for Sam's shoulder. "She'll be fine," he said softly.

"She shouldn't have gotten hurt," Sam said. "It's just because she's with me. It's not fair."

"Fair very rarely has anything to do with how life turns out," Luke said. "You can't protect people from making their own choices. She chooses you, and she does it with her eyes wide open. Trying to take that choice away diminishes who she is."

Not that Luke had spent a whole lot of time thinking about this at all. Really.

"She kept telling me that she knew the risks of trying to help," Sam said. "But I don't think she was expecting this. I just wish she could be who she is and be safe too."

"I think that's the price we pay for picking girls who could kick our asses," Luke replied.

That got a laugh out of Sam. "Yeah, I bet Jo wouldn't stand down from something like this either. I know she wouldn't, she's seen this stuff too."

"And she'd poke me with one of her knives if I asked her to," Luke said fondly.

Xander came in to check up on Dawn, really not pleased to be doing this again so soon after visiting Willow the same way. Or, y'know, at all.

"She's still not awake?" he asked when he saw Sam there, less because he couldn't tell that fact for himself and more because he'd love to be convinced otherwise.

"Not yet," Sam said, frowning at Xander. "But she'll wake up soon. She has to."

"Tell me this wasn't Angelus again." Because if he'd fooled them all and the re-souling spell had failed, Xander's no-dusting policy was going on strike, no matter what Logan might have to say about it later.

Sam shook his head quickly. "No, it wasn't him," he said. "I think it was a demon. Specifically, the demon that killed my mother."

Xander winced. "So basically a different demonic -------" [Huh. No convenient microphone feedback when you're not on the radio. Who knew.] "--Funny how we never seem to run out of those. You know what this thing looks like? Blue, green, horns, scales, tail?"

Small disappearance for breakfast and grocery shopping, but mostly around.

*loves Adah like pie*

LOL, good. I'm sitting here in my chair, flailing and going "OMG, I hope they all know that I'm really not a heartless bitch." Pause. "Most of the time, anyway." heeeeeeee.
