Clinic Hours - Monday November 21st 2005

Wilson was still tired and in all honesty, he expected to be through the holiday weekend. He was physically run into the ground -hey, Fandom might be a relatively small island but you trying running all up and down those hills ~~particularly hauling Angel's muscular ass around~~- and as for emotionally...

Yeah that was pretty much still touch and go also.

But, the Clinic was open the lights inviting and the smell of a Christmas Blend coffee filled the air. Wilson was working on discharge papers/information for Rory and Logan. He could only imagine that they were more then ready to be sprung though he was uncertain about when exactly that springing was going to happen.

Doctor....well the coffee's made, come by and have a cup if you wish.

"Oh god," Tara murmurs, sitting down hard on the edge of the bed and leaning forward to rest her head against Shane's hip. "We still haven't had that conversation..."

"Huh?" Rory asks, looking puzzled.

"Um... spells and thunderstorms, and, um... sex... they're all kind of, um... the same thing. Ultimately." Tara bites her lip, kicking herself for not talking to Shane about this sooner. And privately. "Like, um, the cliche of bringing the monster to life with a lightning strike?"

"Really," Shane says, both of her brows slowly arching as she looks at Tara.

Tara nods, biting her lip as she looks up at Shane. Details later, I promise. Practical demonstrations, if you want them, just don't make me explain it all in front of Rory, please.

"Well magic is just using energy to manifest something. And you have to get the energy from somewhere - so the most powerful magic sometimes pulls from nature, although that energy is harder to convert. Like, um, it's the wrong sort of current? Whereas energy from, um, people... is already in the kind you can use."

"The kind you can use? I usually have a lot of energy," Rory says, still confused. "I drink coffee a lot, and stuff. So could I do magic?"

Tara turns to Rory, smiling. This is a safer topic, by far. "Well, caffeine doesn't actually give you any extra energy. It just taps what's already there, brings it to a very jittery surface. That's one of the reasons why covens were used - twelve people will always have more energy than two, and so the spell that a coven can cast is far, far more powerful. But there are some activities that actually raise your energy, rather than just tapping it, and they link more closely to magic."

No, getting too close to the stuff we're avoiding, veer left... "Like, um, meditation? Which puts you in an almost-sleep state, and of course, sleep refreshes your energy. So meditation actually raises your power level. Does that make sense?"

"I guess. So doing things that up your energy can help. Like...exercising?" Rory asks skeptically.

"Well, in the short term exercising tires you out, so you wouldn't actually, like, cast a spell while running. But long term it raises your energy levels, which is why you very rarely see an, um, plump witch."

Safe. Thank goodness.

Shane smiles as she listens to Tara speak about magic. For her, it still feels as though she's an infant learning to walk or speak... something very fundamental but, at the same time, perfectly natural and comfortable.

She looks over at Rory. "Wanna see something cool?" She asks, arching her eyebrow just slightly.

Rory looks wary. "Sure?"

Instead of taking offense at Rory's hesitation, Shane offers her a calming and reassuring smile as she holds out her hand to Rory, long fingers uncurled. "Give me your hand?" She inquires, her tone gentle and even.

Rory arches a brow and holds out her right hand.

Shane offers Rory a warm smile to thank her for trusting her. She knows that, for a person in Rory's position, it's probably difficult to trust anyone right now... especially anyone she considers a friend. She can't blame her for that, and doesn't... just simply accepts it as the changeable thing she imagines it to be.

Taking Rory's hand in both of hers, Shane closes her eyes and concentrates. The touch of her hands on Rory's is light and warm and there's barely any pressure at all so much as simple contact of skin on skin. Shane's expression remains perfectly calm, though focused, as she allows a bit of her own energy to pass through the small points of contact between herself and Rory.

Rory's filled with a pleasant, light feeling, as though she's totally at peace, and utterly content.

"What...what's going on?" she asks softly.

"I'm giving you some of my energy," Shane replies, her voice calm and hushed, her eyes remaining closed. A few moments more and she imagines the flow of white light from herself to Rory thinning bit by bit and then coming to a gentle stop.

Opening her eyes, she looks up at Rory and smiles. "Pretty cool, huh?"

"Very cool," Rory says, very perplexed. "How?"

"Your body has energy running all through it," Shane says. "There's seven different spots and they're called chakras and they're kinda like... focus points that represent different kinds of energy. When I touch you, I'm making a link and kinda... patching in to your energy so I can give you some of mine."

Glancing over at Tara, she bites her lip. "Did I get that right?" She asks, brows creasing a little.

"Broadly speaking," Tara replies, her smile gentle and proud. "What you're actually doing is just offering the energy to Rory. If she didn't accept it you couldn't make the link."

Brushing the backs of her fingers tenderly over Shane's cheek, Tara adds, "soon we'll play with specific types of energy, okay?"

Shane is all but glowing at Tara's soft-spoken praise as she leans her head into the gentle touch. "Okay," she murmurs.

"What she said," she says to Rory with a faintly bashful smile. "Tara explains this stuff a hell of a lot better than I do."

"Well, yeah," Rory agrees, looking sheepish. "That's why she's such a good teacher."

Tara blushes, ducking her head. "Thank you," she says, impossibly pleased by Rory's praise.

"I just mean... where I come from, magic isn't real... at least, from what I know, it's not," Shane says. "I never... knew anything like it even existed but she manages to explain it so that even I understand it."

"Same here. I'd have told you you were crazy for trying that three months ago," Rory grins.

Tara laughs softly. "Most people where I'm from don't believe in magic, either - and even those who do often think it's something special. I mean, it is special, but people think it's something that you have to be, um, different? To learn? Except it's more like, um... like playing the piano. I mean, some people can never learn it, however they try. It's just not in them. Most people can learn a few simple tunes - and once in a while you get a concert pianist."

She shrugs, smiling wryly. "I'm nowhere near that good, though."
