The Clinic - The Morning After

Wilson and House had been up the whole night, between hourly checks on Rory, Marty and Logan they had -laughably- tried to relieve each other for a few hours of sleep but each had been too keyed up to take advantage and after the first try had given up.

The oncologist had quietly worked on paperwork in between rounds, while House had played with his gameboy. For the moment, neither had brought up the subject of what had just happened with the other, it was just all too confusing and in the end, not important to delivering medical attention. In some ways, it was better that they didn't have the details, that would just confuse the focus.

As morning dawned, Wilson had taken advantage of a quick break to grab a shower and clean the blood off his skin and out of his hair. He'd come back and tagged House out, firmly suggesting that the older doctor needed to put some intense heat therapy on that bad leg of his...and also demanding -in a loving manner- that House make coffee.

When House headed off towards the little apartment, Wilson began to run rounds once more.

"Definitely. Great idea." Parker frowns. "I hope he's feeling okay. I called to check on him-- he was looking tired. Tara was going to check on him later."

"Did he help with the thingy?" Rory asks. "The...soul thingy, I guess?"

Parker gave her a sharp look, realizing someone told her all of it. "He gave us a place to do it, and he helped Tara with the magic, somehow. I'm not clear on that. I think it was getting to hard for her, and he helped her hang on until it was done."

Rory nods. "Do you know if it worked?"

She couldn't meet Rory's eyes. "We think so. We're pretty sure it did." She forced herself to look up. "But there's no way to be certain when he's not around to see." Parker smoothed the sheets down, shaking her head. "I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer."

Rory swallowed hard. "Okay. If it did work...how would we know he's not just...y'know, trying to fool us again?"

Parker set her jaw. "I don't know. But I'm going to find out." She blinked. "Lorne. At Caritas. He said to look out for you, he knew-- maybe he's a place to start."

"Lorne," Rory said, her brows arching. "Crap. He tried to warn me, and I was so stupid. Why didn't I listen to him? Or Angela? Or Marty? Or you, or any of the countless people who told me Angelus was dangerous?"

Parker looked around the room. No one else seemed like they had an easy answer either. "Well... maybe, because this is the first time you met someone... really evil?" she offered, feeling the inadequacy of it.

"Maybe," Rory answered hollowly. "I just feel...really stupid. And naive. And stupid."

"Not stupid." Parker reaches for her hand, and squeezes it. "You... trust people. That's all. That's not stupid or smart, it's just -- the way you are."

"Yeah, well...maybe I should stop that," Rory says quietly. "I don't want to almost get killed again."

"How likely is that?" Parker shrugs, still holding Rory's hand. "You know, now. Angelus was what he was. His friends, a lot of them, are like that too. Belthazor definitely. Malfoy too. The others too, maybe. You won't get fooled the same way twice. No one ever is." She shakes her head. "I wish I knew... what to say," she muttered.

"Malfoy?" Rory asks weakly. "He's my lab partner. And...Belthazor? Phoebe's boyfriend? These...these are my friends."

She laughs bitterly, which sounds strange to her own ears. "I'm really stupid. I can't believe this. I trusted and befriended a murderous vampire because I had to go and make a big point about how nonhumans are people too...and I was so trusting and stupid I almost got myself killed. Logan, too."

"Bullshit," Logan snapped. "It wasn't your fault. He came after me."

"Which makes it Angelus's fault," Parker snarls. "Christ, Echolls. He's been building up to this for months, now that I think about it. He was reading the tabloids about your family in the library, but that sure as hell doesn't make it some equal face-off." She lets out a breath. "Can we just agree that he sucks, and some of us saw it first because he thought it would be funny to *show* us?"

Logan shook his head. "No. He told me stuff -- I should've known."

"He told me stuff too. About turning people into vampires." Rory's voice is quiet and has an unfamiliar edge to it. "It's not your fault. I don't know why he came after us, but don't blame yourself. Neither of us could've known."

"I know why he came after us," Logan said flatly.

Folding her arms, Parker glares. "Do tell."

Rory tilts her head curiously. "You mean other than that it's his nature?"

Logan's right hand touched the bandage on his neck. "He was recruiting," Logan said.

"So?" Parker shrugs. "He liked you. In his own sick 'n' twisted way. That still puts it on him." She studies Logan, then bursts out, "Oh, don't tell me you think it says something about you!"

Logan looked at her for a long moment, then dropped his head. "Nope, you're right, all him," he conceded.

Rory sighed, and tried to pull herself into more of a sitting position. She gave up after a second, and instead reached her right hand out to him.

"Not your fault. Not even my fault. It was him," she said softly. "And feeling bad over it won't do anything. What we can do, however, is do our best to make the rest of his unlife a non-living hell."
