FTEC, Friday

Ronan had left the day shift to the nurses today, instead coming in for the evening shift with his Art of War compatriots. "So, yeah, I don't know if you guys have been in here before," he said, "so if you have any questions, feel free to ask."

The clinic was open for business. And hopefully wasn't getting any (although Ronan wouldn't object all that much, really, healing people can be terribly exciting).

So Ino wouldn't yell at him -- and when he started being afraid of teenage blondes, he wasn't sure -- Tyler stopped in after the staff meeting for a once-over, a confirmation that his rib was cracked, and some bandages and painkillers.

He was still a little grumbly about the whole thing when he left.

Queen Alice's royal schedule opened, and lo, for she descended upon the clinic.

"What is it you do here?" Alice asked, glancing around with some curiosity and a small measure of hesitation. "Besides cure the ill, that is."

If he mentioned the words electroshock therapy she was going to be a blur of Queen Alice, running back to the dorms.

"What sort of magical solution?" she asked, still darting nervous looks into the corners. No straps, no rusted metal trays holding strange instruments. So far, so good. "I mean, why would anyone object? Does it ... change you?"

"I can see that," she said, mulling it over. "If you were from a world where magic was a very bad thing, it may be hard to adjust. Especially with such a very important matter as one's health."

"Fear is such a strong motivator," she sighed. "It's hardly ever rational, but it can be the loudest voice, some days. Is this hospital only for ... physical injuries?"

"Of course not," Alice said, not sounding as though she believed it. "Though there's little to be done for madness, really. Do you have visitors often? Patients, I mean, though the other kind as well."

"Oh?" she asked. "I'm sorry to hear that. Who was it? I doubt I would know him; I only arrived here in May myself."

She shuddered. "I can imagine some were in need of ... clinic services, after our Vice-Principal turned evil, and again when those strange others arrived this fall."

Tony's here! He brought his laptop today and he's studying a water purification spell.

Tony nodded. "We had this discussion yesterday in Leadership class about who gets to survive in a bomb shelter with limited supplies. I can't create food and water with magic, but I figure this is the next best thing."

"Sure," Tony said. He turned the laptop towards Ronan. "I'd like to see how your magic does it."

[Nah, he knows Ronan's a wizard. Though Alice would only see a game of spider solitaire on the screen, should she choose to look.]

Tony studied the circles. "Okay, I don't get this thing," he said, tapping the paper, "but I think I see what you mean. You got some water here?"

"Also safe to drink if it doesn't work," Tony said. "You have salt around here somewhere?"
wantstodirect: (Of course I can do this)

Tony studied the laptop's information, then focused on the water and spoke the words of the spell. He tried to feel the energy of the salt, planning to lift it out of the water. He could feel the water and the salt as separate things. While staying aware of the water, he concentrated on pulling the salt away from it.

He had a grasp on the salt! He tugged at it gently, but the water clung to it. He frowned, focused harder, and pulled.

The glass exploded. A chunk of it lodged in Tony's forearm. "Fuck!"

"Please," Tony said, mentally kicking himself for screwing up in front of Ronan. And also, OW. "That wasn't what I'd planned," he added.

"Thanks," Tony said. He poked at the faint scar on his arm, but it seemed completely healed. "That's pretty damn impressive. Though," he hesitated, "do you have to do the thing with the blood each time?"

"Good," Tony said. "I mean, I wasn't worried," okay, maybe a little, "but it's good to know." And 'pain for pain' - that made sense, with what Tony understood of magic theory. Everything has a price.

"I'm all right," she said, brushing her arms off and freeing a few errant small specks of glass. "A little panicked, but unhurt. I would have thought there were easier ways to separate salt from water."
