There were medical books and bottles of aspirin to make carefully balanced towers out of on the front desk today, but they weren't getting much attention. Adah had collected them and set them up, only to have them abandoned for brooding. She was trying to figure out the reason for the closed library earlier when she'd shown up, with a lightly lingering tugging in the back of her bran that she'd been missing....something this weekend.

Brooke wasn't actually hurt. However, she had decided that yesterday had been kind of boring and she hadn't gotten anywhere and she actually remembered that it as boring and she hadn't gotten anywhere, so there was a way to fix that. Namely, seeing whether or not she could get a painkiller or two.

She headed into the clinic with a practiced limp on her left ankle, saying, "A little help here?"

Adah arched an eyebrow as someone limped into the clinic. Well, she thought, straightening slightly, so this was what it was like when she entered a room. She probably wouldn't make much of a crutch, though, or much of a help, so she gave one of the nurses a look as she went to go fetch a pair of crutches. Adah very carefully got up, watching carefully at how the other girl was moving. She was hoping to figure out what the problem was before a diagnosis, just for her own satisfaction. Once standing, she gave the girl a questioning look, grabbing a clipboard to scribble down the information.

"I missed a stair," lied Brooke, giving a little hop on her "good" ankle to further the effect before she got to do the crutch thing. "I think I tore a ligament or something. Or you know, I've heard about people who had hairline fractures and never knew it, so maybe I broke it because it hurts a lot." No, it didn't.

A torn ligament? Adah arched a skeptical eyebrow, tucking the clipboard slightly in against her to keep balance while she made notes. "How did you fall?" she asked; if it was a torn ligament, it was quite a fall. Probably onto something in which a limb could get mangled on, and then awkwardly, painfully jarred away, maybe. Awkward, painful angles. At least in Adah's mind.

"I was going down ths stairs too fast and whoops, I misjudged and there was twisting and pain and did I mention this hurts?" asked Brooke. It still didn't. "Maybe it's just a bad sprain. A really bad sprain."

"How many stairs did you fall down?" Adah asked, still trying to picture it. She wasn't setting limping foot into an exam room until she had a good idea of how it occurred. It was, after all, important to be thorough in medical studies.

There was the briefest of pauses before she said, "...Two?"

The eyebrow quirked again. Adah could fall down two steps and be fine. She cleared her throat a little, limping down the hall to exam room one (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/437896.html?thread=9670792#t9670792), holding the door open as she gestured the girl in.

As she held the door open for the patient, Adah carefully watched the small details of her movements on her way to the exam table. It was a little exciting that she was finally having a patient. A good deal of the excitement was killed by the fact that it was probably for a faker. She wondered if she should pretend to be insulted for all limpers everywhere.

Brooke hobbled in with a few carefully timed "ow, ow, owie"s and made her way to the table. She was even biting her lip when she got up onto it, making a big show of favoring her ankle. She had had this sort of injury before, which was the only reason she was trying this stunt now. The unfortunate part was that the amount of painkillers she'd talked her way into that time kind of dulled the whole experience.

"That's better," she said, once she was off her foot.

"Name?" Adah asked, looking down at the information form on the clipboard. She was tempted to just write brunette Rachel Price.

"Brooke Davis," she said, and hissed quietly when she purposely accidentally moved her foot.

Adah nodded slightly and wrote down the name. Injury? Possible injury to te wrist. She made a quick note before setting the clipboard down so that she could move over toward the exam table. Carefully, slowly, she pulled over a stool so she could work with Brooke's ankle and find out what might be wrong. It wasn't an easy task for her, but she was taking quiet note of how Brooke's patience was before having a seat.

Very carefully, but surprisingly well for doing it with just one hand, Adah removed the strappy type shoe on the supposedly offending foot. With shoes like this, maybe there might be something to this sprain thing, although Adah was already noticing a lack of swelling. "Think you can hold your leg solid for me?" she asked. "It shouldn't be hard if it's just your ankle, and my right hand is not very good."

Dammit, okay, Brooke felt a little bad for doing this with someone who sort of obviously had their own problems, and now that it'd been addressed she actually had to think about it. "Sure," she said, obediently holding her leg still.

Adah gave a small nod. "Okay," she said, With her left hand, she grabbed the most obvious part of Brooke's foot, as far as injuries went. Pretty hard, too. "Does that hurt?" she asked, her quiet drawl completely without malice that her grip might suggest.

"Ow!" she frowned, not having expected that. She didn't feel so bad about this right this second now. "Do you mind? Injured here!"

"Common medical procedure," Adah coolly responded. "This is so I can know where exactly what the problem is."

She squeezed Brooke's ankle, close to where the bone was. "How about this?"

Brooke wondered if she could produce tears on command for this. "It hurts," she said, throwing in just the right amount of whine. She was sort of getting determined if she had to go through this whole thing.

"What kind of pain?"

"The kind that hurts!" Brooke said with wide eyes, thinking this was sort of self-explanatory.

Adah was always quick to skepticism; this Brooke girl wasn't helping with her habits. "What kind of hurt? Sharp? Dull? Burning, piercing?"

"Sharp," said Brooke, deciding that was the best answer, kind of like a multiple choice quiz. "Definitely sharp. What's that mean?"

"I'm not sure yet," Adah mused lightly. She slowly drifted her fingers up, toward the top of Brooke's foot. Where no possible pain could be had from any of the suspected injuries, according to Adah's research. She pressed down. "And here?"

"Ow!" Brooke cried, even though it didn't hurt at all. "Look, the entire thing hurts. There's a lot of pain. A lot."

"That's interesting," Adah said softly, "because there's nothing there for a sprain or a torn tendon to cause pain."

She looked up at Brooke with an expression that made it clear that she didn't need to say anything else.

...Damn.

"Well, it hurts," Brooke insisted, not letting that stop her. "Maybe I just strained a muscle and need something for it."

Adah arched an eyebrow. "Perhaps we should run a few scans? That'll tell us for sure."

Considering that the only scans she could do were X-Ray and that wouldn't give any information about muscle, Adah was leaning heavily on the fact that if Brooke didn't know that the ~~handwavey part of the foot because, yeah, like I have a medical degree~~ would not be affected by a sprain, mabe she didn't know that they didn't have that technology.

Okay, that was way too much work, and she still wanted to go out tonight. "Well, you said it wasn't what I thought it was, and don't most doctors like, just write you a prescription and send you on your way?"

Adah grinned slightly. "Funny. I always thought a diagnosis preceded a prescription. But what do I know? It's not like I've been studying and getting into medical school or anything..."

"If you've been studying and getting into medical school and everything, then why can't you tell me why my foot hurts?" Brooke countered, thinking she maybe had this one. It may have been the desperation talking.

Times like this it was really a good thing Brooke didn't have Jaina's access to the Force. Just imagine all the attempted mind-tricking and telekinesised drugs that would be happpening.

The smirk on Adah's face broadened as she still, lightly, held Brooke's foot. "Oh," she said, "I can tell you perfectly well why it 'hurts.'"

"Okay then," she said, figuring this was the diagnosis part and then she could get her drugs. "Why?"

Well, see, that was the thing about the Hippocratic Oath, really. Technically, it didn't apply until you made it. And she was not exactly Doctor Price yet. She quickly down a fractured ankled on the form as she asked, "Well, depends. What's your poison?" She continued to list off a variety of different painkillers she knew she could get Brooke without too much of a problem.

Brooke blinked in surprise, and still not entirely sure she was hearing this right, said, "What's the strongest? It really hurts."

Adah's eyebrow quirked slightly. Maybe her impression was incorrect, and this Brooke wasn't as into it as she had assumed, if she didn't even know what she wanted. The idea of possibly supplying her with somehing completely different crossed her mind.

"No preference, then?"

"You're the doctor, I'm just the patient," Brooke pointed out. The truth was, whatever was given to her, she'd totally take and wouldn't even think to remember the name.

In the end, Adah decided it wasn't worth risking this very important position for someone who couldn't even specify what she wanted to knock herself out from her pain. She took in a deep, considerate breath. "One moment," she said, slowly rising from the chair and limping out.

She returned later with an orange bottle of pills. "Percocet," she said. She was doing a lot of research to catch up on the 45 years she'd missed in medical technology, and that showed up often. "That should help the....pain."

Of course, Adah had filled the bottle with nothing but a big fat placebo, but she was having a feeling that Brooke wouldn't be able to determine a difference.

That was a name Brooke recognized as being something really good, too. "That is perfect," she gushed. "Thank you so much, you're such a great help."

"Hope your foot feels better," Adah offered, no hint of the grin she was feeling in her voice or on her face.

"Me too, I'm sure it will," said Brooke, hopping off the table onto her supposedly good foot, willing to at least see her ruse through. "You are like unto a saint."

Oh! A saint! That? Was a good one. But she was glad to send Brooke on her was and return to the desk and do nothing.

THEY HAVEN'T KILLED ME YET!
