FTEC, Monday, December 3 - Day Shift

The nurses were running the clinic this morning, but they had Dr. Troy's pager number in case of emergency. And while Dr. Howser had noted in the current patient's chart that he did not have the plague, well, they still were being extra careful to wash their hands and wear masks while checking on him. Just to be safe.

When he pings in.

Zuko was still sleeping restlessly, his temperature not having gone down despite the medicines he'd received. He kept trying to push off the blankets, murmuring occasionally in his sleep as he turned from side to side.

Aly'd heard on the radio that Zuko was sick and made her way into the clinic to see what exactly was going on. She got the ~~whee modded~~ go ahead from the nurse to go back and made her way into the exam room.

She leaned over the bed, looking closely then just barely touched his shoulder. "Zuko?"

His eyes snapped open for a second, but he quickly squeezed them shut again as the lights were still too bright. "Mom?"

"No," she said softly, looking more worried and letting her hand touch his shoulder more firmly as her other hand reached to dim the lights a bit for him. "It's Aly. How are you doing?"

He noticed the light go down and slowly opened his eyes again, shifting uncomfortably on the bed. "Something's wrong," he whispered.

"You're sick," she agreed. "You'll get better very soon."

She hoped. Aly had no idea what would cause this fever and sickness without it being an actual illness. Or poison. Or magic. Maybe...hmm.

It almost felt like more, but he didn't understand what was going on. The dreams were still lingering in his mind and he was tired. Tired and hot. "Don't want to sleep. There's dragons."

Aly smoothed his damp hair off his forehead, feeling more like a mother than a teacher for the moment. "I can sit with you and keep them away."

Her hand felt cool on his skin and his eyes were a bit more focussed as he glanced up at her. "They took her away."

She nodded slowly. "I know. I won't let them take you though."

He licked his lips, apparently needing a moment to consider her words. "Will have to go."

"Why?" Aly asked," laying her palm over his forehead. "You're doing good staying right here."

His eyes closed at the touch and he struggled to catch his breath for a moment. "I can't hide forever."

"You're not hiding, Zuko," she said softly.

"I don't know anymore," he whispered, almost sounding desperate.

"I'll help you if you want," Aly told him. "But you need to get better first." Her hand stroked back into his hair again. "Then you can worry about it."

He seemed to relax at her words, nodding slowly. "They won't leave me alone."

"Tell them to wait. They'll wait for you," she murmured.

He wasn't sure if it worked like that. "What if I'm too late?"

"Then you'll find a different way," Aly said. "Now you need to just get better."

"Okay," he agreed way too easily, sounding more like the little boy she'd seen one weekend than the teenager he was.

Which Aly noticed far too clearly. "Want me to get you something to drink?"

He nodded. "It's hot in here," he commented, pushing off his blankets.

She moved carefully, keeping an eye on him, and poured a glass of water.

"That, Zuko, is because you have a fever."

"I think I knew that," he said with a slight frown, pushing up to reach for the glass.

Aly chuckled lightly, steadying the bottom of the glass. "Knew you were a smart one."

He downed the glass in one go, handing it back to her before he sagged down on the pillows. "Not always."

"It'd worry me if you were smart all the time," she pointed out softly. "That's not part of being seventeen."

This time he stayed quiet as he rubbed a hand across his face, fingers still for a moment on the scar.

Her eyes couldn't help but catch that, and she looked more worried for a second. "Relax, Zuko. You'll fulfill your duty."

He held her eyes for a moment, then nodded quietly and as if she'd somehow reassured him, he closed his eyes again

Aly watched him for a long moment. It wasn't a physical illness, no, but a confusion in his mind perhaps. His subconscious forcing him to completely accept the choices he made Saturday night. She smiled, patting his shoulder softly just once as she made sure he really was asleep before slipping out before anyone else came into the room.

Mel was curled up in a chair in the room. Occasionally she'd wake up and check on Zuko and see how he was doing.

Zuko was still restless, mostly tossing in his sleep but sometimes he opened his eyes. "Where are we?"

Mel got up from her chair and shuffled over to Zuko's bed. "The clinic. Remember? You're sick."

She reached out to put her palm on Zuko's forehead to check his temperature.

He was still hot to the touch, but he vaguely remembered now. "The Avatar was here."

Mel frowned in concern. "I don't think he was," she said quietly. "Do you want anything to drink?"

He nodded right away. "Yes," he replied. "He was here. With the dragons."

Mel looked alarmed as she reached over to pour some water and brought it up to Zuko's lips. "Dragons?"

He nodded. "Two," he said, eagerly drinking. "They're always there. Have you seen them?"

Mel frowned and reached out to touch his hair. "No. But if I do I'll chase them off. Okay?"

He frowned a little, but finally nodded. "Okay."

"Get some rest," Mel said quietly. "I'll make sure nothing gets you."

He didn't argue at all, merely lay back against the pillows and closed his eyes again.

Mel watched him for a few moments longer before she went back to the chair she had been camped out in the last day or so and sat back down again.

And it was a long time before she drifted out to sleep again.

When one's head has been cut off, the best treatment is ointment.
