FTEC, Tuesday, November 20 - Day Shift

Christian had been kept updated on Adah's condition, so he wasn't surprised to find her still in the clinic, her condition unchanged. He checked the monitors keeping track of her vitals; at least she was still in stable condition. Hopefully one of the clinic aides could whip some magic out of their ass and bring her around; it not, he would have to transfer her off island if she didn't come out of the coma in the next few days.

While there was a definitive rhythm to the slow, steady, dirge-like pace of Adah's shallow breaths, a particularly aware person might notice a different rhythm occurring, finally. It wasn't steady or even like the breathing, the heartbeat, though, and was significantly more subtle. It was in her eyes, their lids, their lashes. Pale stone was still mostly dead; it say only the indecipherable, blurs and color without meaning and even without the desire to have meaning. But sounds...that steady, unaware gaze remain untouched until there was a sound. She blinked, the gaze shifted elsewhere. Not toward the sound by any means, but shifted all the same, at least in some vague, mostly mechanical, response to the fact that sound still existed.

Karal slipped in fairly early in the morning, hesitating before approaching her, shaken by her appearance. He'd heard of her continuing sickness from the radio, had come to offer the only help he could. "Sunlord guide you, wherever you may be," he whispered, and reached for a chair.

Settling himself by her side, he bowed his head and began to pray, voice quiet but strong. "Vkandis Sunlord, gentle giver of life, watch over Adah and bear her out of the darkness..."

Adah's eyes blinked slowly at the sound of movement around her; she didn't know that they did, but her neurons did, and, as a steady, quiet sound that wasn't the respirator filled the space, she rolled her eyes. Neurons again, just an attempt at an unconscious, reflexive reaction to change in the status of the world, and after her dead gaze resettled on a corner of one of the walls, she was still again.

Karal glanced up and saw the blinking, the movement, and his voice trailed off. "Adah?" he asked softly. He wasn't arrogant or foolish enough to think prayer had brought her back, no, but he could hope that something had reached her, even for a moment. "Are you there?"

Adah's eyelids slowly fell in the response to another shift in sounds, but that was all the response Karal was going to receive, and it wasn't even a conscious one.

"You are in there, somewhere," he whispered. "Sunlord find you and lead you home."

Karal bowed his head again and resumed praying, the quiet sounds filling the room.

Luke stopped in.

Not because he had any residual guilt for the the cure not, um, curing.

Not that much guilt.

Okay, so there was guilt.

Fortunately, there were also chairs, and Luke enjoyed the silence.

If he noticed the slight change, he wasn't going to call attention to it yet, just in case that scared it away.

Dr. Keyworth was in his office, reviewing the past week, trying not to second guess himself.

He was not emo. He didn't have the bangs for that.

Billy was about half and half. He was unhappy about last week but for some reason he'd woken up this morning feeling really good about the future.

Stan invited him in, not knowing that there was an instance of Fandom Tomfoolery with the timeline.

That Fandom. Wines and dines but never calls afterwards.

"Hey Doc, how'd you fare last week?"

"A bit better than some, not as good as others. Helped out in the clinic as best I could, but...there were matters out of my hands," he said sadly.

"Yeah. I didn't get down to the clinic till Thursday. I was too scared to come help."

"Were you affected?" he asked, trying to remember.

Billy laughed ruefully. "Yeah it took me all week to work up the guts to come down and help, and then the minute I did, I got sick."

"I have heard that quite a few students are reluctant to visit a doctor. Now, I'm not sure if that's a slight to our fine Fandom medical community or if it is from experiences on their parts."

It was the latter.

Oh, that was it. Yeah he liked that. He nodded again, more decisively.
