FTEC - Tuesday Evening Shift 5/22

Wilson had spent a nice, relaxing day corrupting ducks and otherwise enjoying the summer sun.

Thus he was a bit surprised to find that the clinic had a patient in residence when he arrived at work that night. Frowning a little as he recognized Chad's name, Wilson went over the young man's chart with the on duty nurse and gave her instructions to keep him apprised of Chad's comfort through the night.

Then, he settled down at the front desk and set up his laptop to work on his latest journal article.

Lana moaned and her eyelids flickered. "Jim..."

Pleased to hear her speaking Wilson looked to Jim for a moment, wanting to speak with Lana before the young man came back over.

"Lana? It's Dr. Wilson. Jim's right here. How are you feeling?"

As Lana fought her way back up to consciousness, the panic increased and she struggled to sit up, moaning as the pain in her head exploded. "Jim! No, watch out!"

Jim jumped forward, his hand on her shoulder and gently laying her back down. "It's okay, Lana. We got away. I'm fine."

Figuring a familiar voice and reassuring touch would help Lana, Wilson hung back and let Jim help calm her.

"Lana, you're all right, Jim brought you here to the clinic."

Lana reached up to cling to Jim, whimpering a little, but calming with his presence. "Head hurts..."

"You hit it," he said quietly, all of his focus on her. "Lie down. Dr Wilson's trying to help."

Wilson gave Jim a grateful and hopefully reassuring smile and then turned his attention back to Lana.

"Lana? You have a concussion, that's why your head hurts. Can you tell me if your neck hurts? How about your hands and feet, any tingling of numbness?"

"Head and neck," she managed. "No tingling or anything. Just pain." She squeezed Jim's hand tightly, feeling the panic start to rise again and struggling to stay calm. "So scared..."

Jim reached out to stroke her face, automatically mirroring the soothing gesture she used on him, but he pulled back before he touched her, afraid of making it worse.

"Don't be scared. We're safe." Jim didn't want to think what he would have done if Flameboy hadn't turned up.

The bugger about concussions was you had to be stingy with the pain meds but at least she was coherent and, beyond being rattled -and the concussion- whole.

"Tell you what, Lana. Give me a few minutes to get you cleaned up and bandaged and then we'll get you comfortable and set Jim up here with you."

Since Lana would definitely be staying the night for observation.

Lana started to nod, then bit her lip as the pain crashed over her again. "Okay," she whispered and slowly let go of Jim's hand. "Okay."

Jim didn't know what to do. So he hovered. And scowled.

Wilson went to the counter to get the items he needed, looking over his shoulder and suggesting gently.

"Jim? Could you please hold Lana's hand and help her keep awake for the time being?"

Jim nodded and immediately took Lana's hand in both of his own, trying to look not-so-scary down at her.

Lana clung to him again, grateful to have him there.

Wilson carefully cleaned and bandaged up Lana's head and any other cuts and bruises he found on her from where she'd fallen.

Once he was done, he made her as comfortable as possible, setting up a chair for Jim to occupy if he wished to stay in the exam room with Lana over night.

Turning down the lights, Wilson left the pair alone to rest, the nurse and the doctor taking turns checking in on Lana throughout the whole of the night.
