FTEC, Saturday Morning

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency," the Doctor said as he opened his eyes in a chair in the clinic. He looked around, realized this room was a mess, and went about doing all the important things one does in keeping a neat and tidy reception area. After that, he checked on poor Miss Summers, and after seeing no horrendous change in condition (and wondering why the clinic seemed ill-equipped. Where were the medical tricorders or dermal regenerators?), he went back to the waiting area.

And started humming opera songs to himself to pass the time.

She sniffled. "We broke up. He didn't want to deal with a girlfriend." Dawn wiped at her eyes with her sleeve. "Said it was too complicated." God, it hurt even more to say it.

Dean stared and fought from repeating his Huh? reaction, even though that's what was going through his head. But Dawn's reaction was definitely serious and real and he moved to hug her again.

"Okay, new plan. After we finish here, we go back to the school and I kick my little brother's butt until he starts making sense again, then we go investigate."

Dawn buried her face in Dean's shirt and clung tightly to him, tears coming more quickly now. "I can't face him, Dean. I just feel so stupid."

She needed a new place to stay.

"You're not the one that's stupid," Dean told her, stroking her hair and thinking that kicking Sammy's ass was going to be a lot more literal than usual, because dude. You just didn't make girls cry like this. "I can go see Sammy by myself and you can wait in The Place with Hunter and Alec and watch Alec pretend he doesn't actually like the little furball."

Dawn sniffled. "Okay." She looked up at him, suddenly determined as she pushed all the hurt down to deal with later. "We need to find out what--or who--did this to Buffy. That's most important."

"We will," Dean said, confidently. "And Hunt its ass down. Promise."

She nodded damply. "Good." She glanced at Buffy, wishing desperately she'd wake up. "If whatever it is took out a Slayer, it's really not going to be fun to deal with. Some birthday present, huh?"

"Timing really sucked," Dean agreed. "We'll have to get her a combination birthday-get well present when she wakes up."

"We could give her the thing's head in a box," Dawn decided, since Buffy had not yet developed her aversion to demon body parts in boxes as gifts. "That would cheer her right up."

"Could probably manage that easier than Bollywood films or shoes," Dean said.

"Got her shoes already," Dawn told him. And oh, look, there she was, thinking about Sam again, damn it. This hurt way more than breaking up with Dean had. Although she was understanding Buffy and Riley and Willow's reaction after Oz left a bit better now. Out of habit, she glanced around for Anya and reminded herself not to make any wishes.

"She also likes purses."

Dean chuckled slightly. "Somehow I don't think I'd be any better at picking out purses than I am women's shoes."

"Then it's probably a good thing you date a guy," Dawn teased, a ghost of a smile on her face.

"Yeah, Alec's not really the purse and heels type," Dean joked. He didn't bother correcting her on the whole 'dating' thing because he was just happy that she'd stopped crying and was almost smiling.

"Unlike a bunch of other guys at this school," she nodded, laying her head back against his chest. "I can't imagine what either of you would look like, dressed as girls. You're too guy."

"But pretty guys," Dean said with a smirk. "Definitely we'd look better than Seely."

Almost anyone would look better than Seely, she decided. "But you've got broad shoulders and chests and strong jaws," Dawn told him. "Those are non-girly things to have. If you looked less like guys normally, you'd make prettier girls."
