FTEC, Wednesday, January 3

Considering the doctor on duty was currently in a coma, Christian took Dr. Wilson's shift and opened up the clinic for the day.

Wilson was still in his coma.

Caught between the world of the waking and the dead, his subconscious mind built itself a beach upon which it stood, watching the black tide going in and coming out. He could hear all the screams of lives caught in the inexoriable tide, torn from loved ones too soon. The souls of those his skills had failed in the end.

Wilson wrapped his arms around himself, feeling cold, lost and very small as he stood on the shore. Every so often, he'd look back up the seemingly insurmountable dunes with an expression of longing on his face.

Aziraphale...

Aziraphale was somewhere beyond the dunes. Wilson could hear him, though his lover's voice was muffled and the young doctor couldn't understand the words. He could also hear others and...there was something about those others, something that wanted to insist that their muffled voices were more important than the dark waters he stood on the edge of but as hard as he tried, Wilson couldn't quite figure out what he was supposed to do or where he was supposed to be.

So he turned back to the water, stepped a bit closer to it's icy tide and begged it's sobbing voices for forgiveness.

Outwardly, he didn't move, save for where the ventilator caused his chest to rise and fall in perfect, mechanical time.

After his visits from Angela (http://a-phale.livejournal.com/110049.html?thread=2598625#t2598625) and Blair (http://a-phale.livejournal.com/110049.html?thread=2601441#t2601441) that morning, Aziraphale made his way back to the clinic, to sit with Wilson for a couple of hours before he needed to be back at the house. He held a book in his hand, the one that Angela had brought with her (http://www.foliosoc.co.uk/folio/grimms_fairy_tales.php), and he read to his lover in soft, gentle tones.

"But round about the castle there began to grow a hedge of thorns, which every year became higher, and at last grew close up round the castle and all over it, so that there was nothing of it to be seen, not even the flag upon the roof..."

Parker came by around noon, a very gently singing pink orchid in her hands.

La Vie Boheme....

"Hi." She watched Wilson for a few minutes in fascinated disquiet, then put the orchid down. "Angel called, so I heard... how is he?"

Aziraphale looked up from the book, a little startled at the presence of another person, and then gave the singing orchid a curious glance.

"He's...not well."

Closing the book, the angel made a space on the table next to the bed for Parket to set the flower. "They said that it's good to talk to him, that sounds will help...somehow. Miss Frasier told me to read to him, so..."

He made a little motion toward the book in his lap.

Parker nodded, feeling awkward and helpless, and carefully put the flower down on the space he cleared. "I grew it for my Biology class. Willow did the spell to make it sing. Maybe it'll cheer him up? Or you." She studied Phale's face, and asked, "Have you slept at all? I know, maybe you don't need it, but still."

"James likes music," Aziraphale replied absently, again watching the man's face carefully to see if there was any reaction to the sound.

Nothing.

Shaking his head, the angel looked back at Parker. "No, I haven't...I've been here. I don't want to be away more than I have to. There's no bed any longer anyway."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Parker was also disappointed not to see a reaction, but she hadn't really expected one right away. Then Phale's statement distracted her. "No bed? What did you guys have a fire or a flood as well as a catastrophe? And can't they at least roll a cot in here for you?"

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fire," Aziraphale agreed, nodding absently. "I burned it up."

It had hurt to do that, too, because it had been the sleigh bed he'd given Wilson for his flat above the clinic, a little over a year ago.

"I don't need to sleep. James likes for me to, so I do, but I don't need to. It isn't as if I'm doing anything to require resting from anyway," he added, sounding a little bitter.

Which was... disturbing, but also personal enough that Parker felt like asking why, again? would be pushing her luck. "I see," she said quietly, instead. "And you are. You're worrying. And watching. And hoping." She smoothed the coverlet over Wilson's chest. "If that's not exhausting, I don't know what is."

There was a jerk of movement as Aziraphale restrained himself from jumping up to push Parker away. He knew she didn't mean any harm, but his protective instincts had been in high gear since bringing Wilson back from LA.

"I-" He made himself settle back against the chair. "I suppose that's true. I could sleep here in the chair. But...what if I go to sleep, and then he wakes up?"

Parker caught the jerk out of the corner of her eye, and very slowly pulled her hand back, not wanting to set off Phale. Wilson didn't seem to notice, sadly. "Like you wouldn't know?" she teased lightly. "Like you can't tell the second his breathing changes, his temperature, the way he's lying there?" She cocked her head at him, watching his face. "Maybe you'll dream your way to where he is? This is Fandom. Stranger things have happened."

Pippi poked her head into the room to see if anybody was in there besides Wilson.

It had occurred to Aziraphale that being in the clinic when he was feeling fretful and angry wouldn't be a bit of help to Wilson. So whenever he felt himself getting that way, he stepped out for bit, either for a trip over to the house or just a few minutes of walking around town.

He'd gone out on one of these little calming-himself-down jaunts when Pippi arrived, although he'd whispered an assurance to Wilson that he wouldn't be gone long at all, and would read more when he returned. There'd been no response, but all the same, every time, the angel waited just a moment to see if this time was different.

He was rather surprised to walk back in a short while later to find Pippi had settled in during his absence, and was quietly singing to the young doctor in her native tongue.

Aziraphale didn't want to disturb her, and so he crept in softly and closed the door, then stood against the wall and gazed intently at Wilson's face, hoping to see some kind of change, some glimmer of consciousness.

Pippi starts to tell Wilson a story about a rooster that laid an egg on the roof of Villa Villekulla.

It was very believable. And exciting.

There were pirates.

As stood nearby and listened, Aziraphale couldn't help but think that whatever dark place Wilson was locked into within his mind, surely he had to know that it was Pippi speaking to him. And perhaps that might help, in some way.

He looked across the room and gave the young woman a gentle smile.

Pippi looks at Wilson for a while and then starts to tell him about Pip, and the time they went spelunking (http://cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com/13725.html?thread=217757#t217757) and how, when something tried to pull her down into an underground spring, Pip pulled a knife and jumped into the water presumably to make it let go.

Which he did, though not with his knife, but that was pretty stupid, because anything that could give her difficulty isn't something he should be pulling a knife on. Or anything less then maybe a browning assault rifle, considering she "bench presses trucks" as he likes to say and he does nothing of the sort.

But he doesn't generally think of things like that, he leaps to her defense. Which is amazing to her considering there weren't many people in the world who would think she ever needed defending before she came here.

"... I love that about him."

Another smile crept across Aziraphale's face as he listened to Pippi's words. That was exactly what he loved about Wilson, and so he understood what she was trying to say.

Wilson made him feel as though he was a person, as though what he wanted and needed and thought mattered as much as what he was. Maybe mattered more.

He nodded to himself, moving to sit on the floor next to Pippi's chair, where he could look up and still see the young doctor's face.

Pippi looked down at Aziraphale when he sat next to her.

"Oh! I didn't hear you come in!"

Blair came by after spending time with Aziraphale in the morning and stared at Wilson for several long moments.

"I promise to watch every horror movie with repressed sexuality that B Hollywood ever produced and let you tell me all about them." Blair whispered before taking a seat and pulling out a notebook. With a deep breath he began reading his notes from his trip to Babylon 5, making sure to not gloss over the drunken party notes. He figured that Dr. Wilson would appreciate those the most.

At some point, Wilson was bound to ask for more details about the drunken party notes.

Parker talked for a long time (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/258538.html?thread=7093994#t7093994), ending with a mild threat and a chuckle, close enough that someone might smell orchids and the CK One she always wore.

"Get well soon."
