Christian opened the clinic and checked on the patients. Most of the ones who had been there Tuesday had been discharged, but the burn victim remained. There was also a new patient who had apparently fallen down some stairs.

Funny how when he took this job he though that it would be quiet with just the occasional bump and bruise and request for birth control.

Having heard about Joxer's fall on the radio, Willow stopped by to see him. She left him some gummy worms to snack on when he woke up.

Jamie also dropped by after hearing that his adopted brother had ended up here last night.

After all it's the brotherly thing to do.

Jack blinked , openng his eyes. His chest still hurt, but a little less.

he had no idea where he was.

"H'lo?" he called.

Christian heard the patient stir and headed into Exam 2. "How are you feeling?" he asked. "You got some nasty burns there."

"Like shit," Jack said honestly.

Then the accident came back to him. "Did anyone else get hurt?"

"I think you were the only one caught in the blast," Christian said. "What the hell were you doing?" He wasn't being accusatory, but curious.

It was fuzzy, but he knew.

"Making an explosive," Jack said. "New recipe. Couldn't get the stuff I normally use."

He winced. "Should know better than to trust the Internet."

"There are a lot of things you don't want to learn on the web," Christian said. "Making explosives, picking up women, and self-circumcision are among them."

Jack's hand involuntarily went to his crotch, just in case Tyler had otten any other interesting ideas. All was normal, other than the metric ton of bandages his hand grazed on the way down.

"Thanks for the adivce," he said dryly. "So am I going to be okay?"

Christian picked up Tyler's chart and flipped through it. "The burns and cuts will heal with minimal scarring because you lucked out and ended up with one of the best plastic surgeons in the country. Your blood tests, however, indicate sub-theraputic levels of anti-anxiety and anti-hallucinogenic drugs. Have you gone off your meds?"

Jack blinked because, wow, talk about a segue. "Sort of," he allowed. "I thought they made me crazier."

He stared at the wall. "Want the whole story?"

"Sure," Christian said, pulling up a chair.

Of course Tyler picked that moment to take a seat on a counter across from Jack. You don't want to do this, buddy, he said, idly spinning a tongue dispenser between two fingers. What, you think they'll pat you on the head and let you skip off to camp? It'll be back to the Bates Rest Home in half a second.

Jack fought past it. "I have-"

Don't do it. Tyler was waggling a finger at him now.

Jack swallowed and made himself look away. "-Split personalities. Kind of. I see part of myself as this other person. The other me is sort of ... violent. The drugs keep him from blowing stuff up, but they also made me a total space cadet. So he made me quit taking them."

"You need to keep taking those drugs then," Christian said. "I can write you new prescriptions. If you don't take them, then you're going to be a danger to the school and to yourself, and I'll have to report this."

Tyler was yammering in his ear, something about the drugs being a part of the system and the system being broken and taking them was giving in, denying who he was, denying who he could be-

And, he suddenly realized, he just. didn't care.

"Okay," he said. "Will you fix them if they make me start acting like a zombie?"

"I can give you a prescription for a stimulant as well," Christian said. "It should help you feel more alert without counteracting the other drugs. You could change the dosages, too, but you'll need a psychiatrist to supervise that."

"Is there one in town?" Jack asked. "Because I'm kind of supposed to get my head shrunk, too."

"Yes, Dr. Susan Pevensie," Christian said. "I can page her if you'd like, or give you her number."

"Thanks. I'll call her," Jack said, sullenly.

"So when do I get out of here?"

"I can give you prescriptions for the meds you were on," Christian said. "And painkillers for the burns. I'll release you today if you promise to take them and to contact Dr. Pevensie."

"Scout's honor on both points," Jack said. "What day is it, anyhow?"

"Thursday the 18th," Christian said. "You've been here a few days." He scribbled the prescriptions down and handed them to Tyler. "You can have these filled at the NPC Pharmacy. Take it easy for a few days, and come back Monday to have your bandages removed and replaced if necessary."

"Will do, Doc," Jack said, as he slowly lifted himself to a sitting position and swung himself to his feet. He wobbled a little, trying to stand. "Whoa."

"Take it easy," Christian said. "You sure you're okay to go?"

"I have a roommate," Jack said. "And I can take care of myself. I've been hurt worse than this." His hand traced the scar on his jaw.

"See you next week."

"Take care," Christian said, scribbling a few notes on Tyler's chart.

Jack limped out of the clinic clutching his prescription.
