Fandom Clinic, Monday 11/21

Stark arrived at the clinic with plenty of leftover food after his morning class with Summer.

"Pizza this early?"

"Pizza is always good," Stark said seriously. "Even early. And I still have coffee!" How he'd managed to carry all the food down the stairs and then managed to carry coffee from The Perk as well was a bit of a mystery but he'd done it.

After he'd put everything down he turned his attention to Stabby's tank.

"Why does the sign say 'turkeys'?" Stark asked.

"We asked what he was thankful for."

The clinic was open, the crab was thankful for turkeys, and the alien was in.

Where there's lots of food and an alien and a thankful crab.

There might even be some turkey in that moddable food.

And now there was a Steven! "Hello, Stark! How are you?"

"Hello, Steven. Are you hungry? We had food for class this morning and there's plenty left."

Surely some of it was vegan!

"And here I almost brought you a hot chocolate," Steven said as he looked the options over. "How are you besides the leftovers?"

"Fine, I'm fine. You? It was a quiet weekend. Everyone stayed themselves."

"All right," Steven said. "Quiet for me. Marc was out and about both days, if you can imagine."

Actually Stark only needed to imagine one of those days since he'd met Marc for the other. Steven did know that.

"Today's my day for catch up," Steven said. "Running errands all over town. Including visiting a friend. That's you."

"I did see Marc at the coffee shop," Stark said. "Saturday. But it's good to see you now. What errands did you have to do?"

"Picking things up here and there, inviting people to the Hanukkah party," Steven listed off, skipping past the part where one of the errands was him conspiring to get Marc to keep being social. "Nothing major, just needs to be done. How have things been here? No children needing plasters?"

"No patients today," Stark confirmed. "Not yet at least. Not even for sparkly bandages."

"I've never been to a Hanukkah party. What do you do?" To be fair, Stark had only been to a couple of Christmas parties and they'd been thoroughly ridiculous affairs.

"Well there's loads of options," Steven said. "We're not doing some of them because we're keeping religion out of it. So no lighting the menorah or anything like that, that'll be private. But for party well food, of course. Fried things take center stage, so latkes and sufganiyot - that's potato pancakes and jelly donuts, basically. Then we'll have some dreidels out for anyone who wants to play for gelt - that'll be chocolate that looks like coins, in our case. And beyond that hopefully people enjoying good company."

Steven didn't look at all like he was worried people wouldn't find that fun or interesting. Not at all. Don't be silly.

"Dreidels are the little... the things that spin?"

"I think," Stark said after a brief pause, "that people always enjoy food that someone else is providing. And everyone likes fried things, don't they?"

"Little tops, yeah," Steven said. "A bit of fun and an excuse to have chocolate if you win. Bit like the excuse to have friend things, really. Oh - and there'll be options for everyone, not just vegan."

"Why," Stark asked, "would you need an excuse for chocolate?"

There was no chocolate in space, Steven. Chocolate wash meant to be consumed whenever possible!

"Oh I don't think you need one," Steven said. "I'm with you there. But sometimes people think they need a reason to give themselves a treat. Happy to provide one, in that case."

Stark nodded. "Good. I just... have what I want. For food. No reasons needed. Since I never used to have treats."

"I think that's the way to do it," Steven agreed. "Have what makes you happy if you're able to have it. Too many can't, can they?"

"And you never know if there won't be opportunities later."

Because you were dead or enslaved or held captive or...

"It's better to try and enjoy things when you can, I think."

"Enjoy company of people while you can as well," Steven said. He looked out in the direction of the island. "I keep thinking about that what with this time of year and all. How hard it must be to see people being happy if you've suffered loss."

Was Steven sublimating some of his own feelings in that regard into intensity about throwing a party? Maybe.

"They aren't my holidays. But it can be hard, not just at holidays, seeing people who have what you don't."

He'd run off to space to avoid Valentine's Day, after all.

"Around now I just...try to enjoy the parts of the holidays I understand. The food. I like the lights."

"It is nice, isn't it?" Steven said. "So many holidays this time of year about making it light out. Not cursing the darkness, I suppose. But it is pretty. Does this place get done up for the holidays? Back home there's all sorts of decorations and lights put up for Christmas. Can't hardly go anywhere without seeing them."

"There are some. Sometimes the island provides more. Although sometimes those attack," Stark said. He shook his head a little before continuing.

"The Christmas party always has a lot of decorations. And glitter. There's so much glitter."

"Is that Annie's party?" Steven asked. "Or is that another party on Christmas?"

"Summer's and Annie's," Stark confirmed. "With the sweaters and the punch and the glitter cannons."

This work week is only 2 days long. Will I survive it? WHO KNOWS.
