Fandom Clinic, Monday 9/26

After class Stark arrived at the clinic with the usual assortment of coffees for the nurses and was greeted with an indignant "you didn't bring your guest in to meet us!"

"I...we were busy," Stark said. "I'm sorry?"

"You should be! Stabby introduced us to his visitors."

"Stabby had visitors?"

"His siblings came in. He's got photos. Maybe he'll show you. Did you take any photos?"

Stark had taken a few, and his phone had certainly been used to take more on Saturday than he remembered. "A few...with Chiana. I can show you?"

"And Stabby," the nurse said firmly.

"And Stabby."

The clinic was open, the alien was in, and the nurses and the crab were a little salty about not meeting Chiana.

Where Stark might be awkwardly showing his phone to the crab and wondering how Stabby got his own photos printed.

Sometime after lunch Steven popped his head in. He was carrying a shopping bag in one hand and a cardboard drinks tray in the other. "Hello! Do you have a moment?"

"Of course," Stark said, looking up and then nodding and offering a small smile. "Hello, Steven."

"I've brought you something," Steven said. He came forward and put the bag and tray on the desk, carefully rummaging through the bag once his hands were free. "One of the drinks is for you. That's cider. Remembered you saying you preferred hot when it gets colder so I hope that's all right."

"Oh, you didn't have to," Stark said, though he was already reaching for the drink. "But thank you. That's... thank you."

"It's no problem," Steven said. He found what he was looking for and pulled out a cake box from JGob and held that out to Stark as well. "Here we are. I thought about cupcakes but then thought it's you. Carrying coals to Newcastle there. Hopefully cake's different enough to be a treat? Apple honey cake, you see. Enough for sharing with the nurses or Travis as you like."

"You brought cake?" Stark's face lit up (but not in the literal way). "Thank you. Is there an, an occasion I didn't know about? Sharing with Travis sounds good. He had a visitor this weekend too. So I didn't see him as much."

And probably conversations needed to be had about what exactly their relationship status was.

"It's new year, you see," Steven said. "Well, for Marc and me and anyone on the island who's Jewish. It's tradition to have something sweet, like apples and honey, to mark the occasion. Idea is that way your year is sweet as well, see? So may your year be sweet, Stark. That's from me and Marc both."

It was totally Steven who had done all of this but Marc didn't not want Stark to have a good year so Steven was including him regardless.

"I like that," Stark said immediately. "That idea. That's good. I didn't know there was another new year. Happy new year, then, Steven. And to Marc, too."

He would definitely have to share with Travis then.

"Our calendar is different," Steven explained. "There's a few like that on Earth. Lunar new year - that one's common in China and the like - that's around January or February, depending. And food's usually a feature of our holidays. Wait for the one in December. All the fried things you could like."

"Oh. That's good to know."

For an island that did enjoy an excuse for parties they didn't seem to celebrate a lot of the holidays they could.

"What's the one in December?" Look, he was food motivated sometimes. He'd be all over a plate of latkes.

"That one's Hanukkah," Steven said. "Part of that one was that there was this miracle where oil to light lamps lasted longer than it should have. So part of the celebration is frying things up to celebrate. So sort of - erm - donuts, pancakes made of potatoes, that kind of thing."

Not that those were the names of the dishes but Steven was used to translating things into more common terms for Llewellyn, so he figured this would apply here as well.

Exam Rooms

Where the crab is not showing photos and probably neither is the one patient already there.

Exam 1 - Arthur

That poor guy from the causeway last week is still here! In better shape though since it's been a week now.

Arthur was at least now off most of his IVs. The nurses insisted on leaving the stupid thing in his hand just in case, but he had the normal amount of blood and a low but treatable-by-pills amount of vitamins in him. The stitches in his neck pulled when he moved too much, but luckily he hadn't had to yell or fight.

Now if they'd just give him crutches, maybe he could at least walk around a bit. Apparently this weekend had been rather busy, though, so he'd been mostly left to his own devices, which involved John reading National Geographics to him. The world seemed to have changed a lot over the years, and it was a little overwhelming.

Stark meant to comment several hours earlier oops obviously was going to check in on the patient during his shift.

"Hello?" he said from the doorway. He didn't just want to barge in. That would be rude.

"Hello." John stopped reading and held the page as Arthur turned toward the door. "Stark, isn't it?"

"That's right. Stark." He nodded, stepping into the room. "How are you feeling? Do you need anything?"

"I am dying to stand up," Arthur said. "Maybe crutches or something? Just a chance to get out of the bed on my own?"

He hoped John was good at puppy-dog eyes.

"You might need to ask the doctor for that," Stark said apologetically. "I don't know enough about bone healing to know if it's wise. He'll be here in the morning. Is there anything else? Have you eaten? But maybe a little standing wouldn't hurt? I'm not sure."

Arthur sighed in frustration. "I feel like I've been doing nothing but lying here and eating."

"Because your bones are clearly visible, Arthur," John growled.

"I could probably handle an apple or something," he conceded. "And standing, if that's all I get."

"You were very injured," Stark reminded him. "And looked like you hadn't eaten in weeks. I'm sure we could find an apple. And I can help you up, for a bit. I think."

The nurses could yell at him later if he'd done something wrong. Or Will could.

Probably because he hadn't.

"Please," he said, taking the magazine from John and setting it down face-down on the bed for later. He did his best to scoot to the side of the bed, John pushing with his left foot to help.

I was looking for images of crab families to stick in this comment and learned that there is a gospel group called The Crabb Family.
