FTEC -- Monday [August 9]
The very last thing Ino had wanted to do today was go to work. Go to the clinic. All she really wanted to do was curl up in Zack's arms and stay there forever.
But wanting and getting what she wanted were two entirely different things. And if any one came in today… well, she was needed.
While she waited, she worked (if worked could be called the staring she did for a good part of it) on an e-mail. Another thing she had to do to keep a promise.
She didn’t know if she’d send it today, but it was something to... try and put her thoughts in order with, Ino supposed.

Day Shift -- Front Desk
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
"Hello!" he called out.
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Ino flitted neutral eyes up to him and, very slowly, arched an eyebrow.
Ladies and gentlemen, Ino's work ethic today. She felt like crap, she wanted to go home.

Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Besides, he didn't look like he was going to keel over any time soon. She wasn't going to waste chakra on bruises and cuts at the moment.
//I hear band-aids and disinfectant can take care of that,// she said, oh so helpfully and utterly not caring if he didn't like someone talking in his mind.
//Come back when you're dying.// Cuts and bruises--like there were many on the island who didn't have those at the moment. Ugh.
[I, uh, am sorry? She is In A Mood.]
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Eyes wide, he dropped into a defensive stance, hand scrabbling for a sword that wasn't there as he scanned the room.
When no attack was immediate, he turned to the girl at the counter. "That was you?"
[Moody Ninja is Moody. Alarmed James is Alarmed.]
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Sarcasm was in today.
Who else did he think it was?
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
"In this place, I wouldn't be surprised if my dear departed mum appeared to tuck me into bed, let alone my godmother."
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
That was mocking, yes.
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Not that James had a godmother, either.
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
That wasn't helping, was it?
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
"By your leave, then," he said, edging out the door, still wary of attack.
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Jono also hated the holy hell out of the prospect of going to the clinic. But... Well...
At least the person at the desk was somebody he trusted.
//If yer busy, I can go away.//
That was something like 'hello,' and 'I'm an idiot' all rolled into one.
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Ino kinda doubted he'd be here for a band-aid. Watch her close her notebook and look for some of that focus-stuff.
//We're all out of band-aids, you see.//
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
Those on his arms, there? Those were some pretty nasty-looking burns, leaving perfect child-sized handprints seared into his flesh. Considering how quickly he'd lost his bandages on the weekend, the odds of them going up beyond his arms were... high.
//I think it might take a few band-aids.//
Re: Day Shift -- Front Desk
//... That's a new bribe,// she said, with vague curiosity colouring her tone. //I accept.//
She knew it wasn't a bribe. Or, well, at least she hoped not.
//Get your ass in exam room one, Jono.//
Day Shift -- Exam Rooms
Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
This, however, was not.
//Do I want to know why it took you so long to come see me?//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
You know. Important things like that.
Jono shrugged slightly, standing there like something of an awkward lump, yes.
//I wasn't sure it'd be you here today. Didn't want to bother you, otherwise. I've felt worse.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
It was an injury worth paying attention to.
//Some guy wanted me to heal his bruises,// she shared. //I told him to find a band-aid. You get attention.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
He winced.
//I stood still, for a minute. I just took it. I shouldn't have.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
That wasn't judging. Curious, yes, but--
//Strip.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
No bandages today. He'd ruined the last of them in Silent Hill. And so it was burned flesh and fire. Such an attractive combination, really. He turned away slightly, so that he was more shoulder than flame in her field of vision.
He'd been just as burned the other night, when she'd told him about the missing parts that they were looking for. But the other night, the only lighting there really was to be had was him. And there were far more important things to worry about, beyond this.
//Did you see th'children, there?//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
She silently watched him for a moment.
//I won. I wish you wouldn't hide.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
He actually didn't know where he was going with any of that.
He wadded up the turtleneck in his hands, staring down at it. Scorch marks on one side, fluid from his burns on the other. This was going to have to be firmly filed under 'medical waste' come the end of the day.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
She was curious. It was something to think about.
Ino's hands glowed green. //You've been through this once before,// she said, //you know the drill.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
//... To explain. About why I stood still. I froze.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
She didn't know. It wasn't like she'd done any talking in the last bit.
Most of her attention was on the injuries. First the infection, the oozing mess of his back and arms, and then the healing of the wounds themselves. Slowly, of course.
But steadily leaving clear flesh behind. First his arms--to give him something clean to look at.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
Very slightly.
//So much of that world was burning,// he said, after a long, long silence.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
//I would say...// she was quiet for a while, //...that so much of it had been already burnt. The flames we saw were little in comparison to what must have happened.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
He still couldn't quite shake that feeling. It had crept into him, settled in his bones. All of that... He could have caused that much damage. He could have incinerated so much of a town, with just one misstep...
//And then everything burned. Those children... they-//
He couldn't even say it.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
She wouldn't tell him that it hadn't been his fault--he knew that.
And Ino wouldn't tell him that he'd never do such a thing.
He could.
//What about the children? They burned.//
Healing meant he was less likely to step away. She ignored the sweat trickling down the side of her face and focused on clearing his back.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
//They burned. And they walked. They were living flesh on fire.//
Like him.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
It was ridiculously forward of her, she knew that, and Ino was hesitant that it was a good idea, but she rested her forehead against his bare back, an area she'd already healed, despite the fact it was dirty from leftover ooze, and continued her work.
//They had no flesh. They had no minds. No heart. If you turn into that, the part of you that makes you you will have died long ago.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
The muscles in his back stiffened slightly, which he regretted in short order at the pull on the flesh that Ino hadn't yet managed to mend.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
//Felt different, for one,// and a whole lot scarier, //but she wasn't what the children were before.// That she knew.
What the children had been before, Ino couldn't have said. But the little girl on fire...
She'd been different.
//She might have been you,// Ino murmured, //in a different place with less strength of flame. Less reason to cling to sanity. Less ability to try and cling. But she was not one of the children.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
He didn't ever want to become anything like what she was. Of all of the things that they'd seen over the weekend, that one little girl was what he saw when he closed his eyes. Lighting herself on fire.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
Smooth back now. The injuries gone as if they'd never happened.
Ino left her hands where they were and closed her eyes, nudging her chakra downwards to deal with his legs even though she couldn't see. It was harder.
She'd do it anyway.
//You are not.// Not at the moment. Not yet.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
Not broken enough to do the things that she did. He had his fair share of nightmares, but he had absolutely no intentions of making other people suffer them.
The terrifying thing about his power was that, if he ever worked with it, if he ever fully managed to unlock his potential, he could make people believe that they were. Which was a train of thought that he hoped to avoid. A lot.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
She turned that into a hug from behind, careful, very careful to keep safe with his fire.
//If you break, I do not think you'd take it out on innocent people. I trust that.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
//The thing to remember.//
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
And then he glanced over his shoulder, just a little, and nodded.
//Thank you, Ino.// A pause. //I don't suppose there's a sink or something here where I can clean up?//
Because... ew.
Re: Exam Room 01: Jonothon Starsmore
The hug had been worth it.
//And you're welcome.//
