FTEC, Thursday [01/08]

Simon came in early today, although he was unusually distracted due to the plans for moving into his new room. Not that the move required any complex logistics, but he had to tell Mary and hope she didn't take offence.

He sat down behind the desk and skimmed through a newly arrived journal, making some comments in red in the margin to statements he found questionable.

Simon blushed a little. "Well, I hope the benefits of this time outweighs the negatives sides, most of the time."

"Indeed," Mina said. "So far, my time here has been mostly pleasant."

"I came here only to find my sister," Simon said, "And when I find her I'll go back, but in the meantime... it's a good place."

"You have lost your sister?" Mina said. "That is terrible."

"She was kidnapped," he said. "And I have no way to go after her." The worry that he usually kept beneath the surface, reemerged.

Mina pressed a hand to her chest. "That is awful," she said. "Nothing can be done at all?"

"At the moment, no." He shook his head. "I hope I will find a way." He tried smiling. "But I shouldn't burden you with this."

"It is a large burden for a man to carry," Mina said. "It is noble of you to carry it so quietly. Though also foolish, as I would endeavor to believe that there are many in this town who could lend assistance."

"She was kidnapped by a former teacher and taken to her universe. It seems like no one knows how to get there." Simon frowned to himself.

"It seems the school is more sinister than many would have me believe," Mina said. "If there is ever a way in which you need assistance, please do not hesitate."

"Thank you," he said, smiling sadly at Mina. "It's good to have friends."

Mina nodded. "They are most important," she says, trying to sound reassuring.

"So who else do you know in Fandom?" he asked, looking for a less painful topic.

"There are many," Mina said. "Miss Connell, whom I believe is known to you. Biff, who works at the meditation center. Miss Bennett, who works at the school. There are others as well."

"I know Mary - Miss Connell - quite well, but I haven't met the others. My sister used to work for Mary and she's been quite supportive." He smiled.

"I am certain she would be," Mina said, secretly a joke to herself. "She is certainly friendly."

"She is. Although I won't be staying at the hotel much longer," Simon said. "I found a room elsewhere, hoping it would feel a little more like home."

"Like the future?" Mina inquired.

"Maybe not." He smiled. "In my time I live on a spaceship. I meant, a little more personal than a hotel room."

"Of course, forgive my mistake," Mina said. "I do hope you find your new home more suitable."

"Oh, nothing to forgive," Simon said. "And once I've moved in you're welcome to stop by for dinner sometime..." He paused, blushing. "And I have a feeling that would be totally inappropriate in your time, so just forget I said it."

"The invitation is welcome, sir," Mina said. "Though a lady requires a specific one, not a mere suggestion."

"Oh, I see." Simon looked relieved that he hadn't offended Mrs Harker. "Well, then I'll offer a proper invitation once I'm settled. Although I have to warn you that my landlord is quite excentric, but goodhearted."

"Indeed, he must be goodhearted to use the term eccentric," Mina said. "For those that are not are deemed insane for their peculiarities."

"A lot of people called my sister crazy," he said frowning. "But that wasn't because she was unkind, but because she was tormented by what had been done to her. Minsc doesn't seem to suffer from that."
