FTEC – Saturday [October 4]

Ino was a bit out-of-sorts today, for utterly no reason, and true to her temper that meant she was grumpier at the nurses than she’d been last week.

When one of them ruffled her hair, and another got her a glass of water, Ino realized that, somehow, her grumping at them wasn’t going to work anymore and that just made her a little bit grumpier as she settled behind the desk to work on her studying.

Where Ino is studying, being snappish, and eyeing the glass of water dubiously.

Sometime in the morning, Jan poked his head into the clinic, and his ears shot forward when he realised it was Ino behind the desk. "Ino!" he said happily and came inside. "I didn't know you would be here." But he was obviously pleased about it.

Okay, hey, it was a little brother! "Jan!" she said, setting her notebook aside and hurrying over. "You're not hurt are you?"

Clinic here, she was allowed to fuss.

"The opposite," he promised, stretching out his nose to nuzzle her. "I think my stitches can come out?" It was said hopefully. "They itch and are starting to pull, and the cuts seems to be better." He pointed his horn at his flank and then his shoulder, where the long gashes did indeed seem to be healed fairly well. "I was going to pull them out myself but I thought the healer might be angry if I did."

Ino almost absently petted him as she wrinkled her nose at the stitches. "They do seem to be healing well," she allowed after a moment. "And, uh, yeah no pulling them out on your own."

She'd get cranky about that. "Come on," Ino said, smiling a bit at him. "Let's see what I can do 'bout that yeah?"

No, seriously, today she'll really hate you if you wind up here.

Jan frisked into the exam room after her, beyond thrilled to be getting them out. "I'll be able to run properly again!"

"That's been bugging you, yeah?" Ino asked, as she retrieved a small pair of surgical scissors, some antiseptic, and forceps.

He bobbed his head, and didn't dance his front hooves across the floor, even though he wanted to. "It has. I've had to shorten my stride, and it makes me slower," he explained. "And I need to be able to run properly, because I'm going to be in a race."

"A race?" Ino asked, cleaning her hands before moving to wipe down the cuts with the antiseptic. "What're you up to now?" But said fondly.

His ears were straight forward and he craned his neck to see watch what she was doing. "I'm going to race Coyote! He is sometimes a man and sometimes a coyote, and he says he is fast when he has four legs." Jan snorted. "But I will be faster. We are going to place a bet on who wins."

"Coyote?" Ino asked as she finished cleaning the cuts. "New person about here, do you think?"

"I think he was. He was friendly, though," he replied. "It will be good to run with someone again, and soon I will have something to bet with. I have a job, now," he added proudly.

"I'll have to meet him," she said, pleased to see him happy. "And you did? That's fantastic! Where? I'll have to come and visit you some time."

Setting aside the antiseptic she took up the forceps and the scissors to first cut pick out the knot and lift it slightly, before cutting the stitch with the scissors. She used the forceps to gently tug the thread from the skin.

He skin twitched, but he held very still. "Turtle hired me to work at her store on Tuesdays. I can't do what the others can, so I'm going to help with delivering things as well. Turtle is going get me a harness or bags I can carry."

That got a slightly wrinkled nose at the mention of him working for Turtle. "I'm happy for you," she said, meaning it as her deft hands continued their careful work on pulling out the stitches. "And that does sound like a good way to make up for... I guess you can't work a register, right?"

"Apu will look after that. I will show people where to go and," he squared up a little and arched his neck, "defend the store if anyone tries to invade."

She ducked her head a bit, grinning. "You'll be magnificent at it," Ino assured him. "I just know it."

Jan preened and nosed her arm - carefully, not wanting to interrupt her. "I will do my very best."

"You wouldn't be you if you didn't," she said, getting closer to the last of the stitches. "I'll make sure to visit you while I'm on break--I got another job, at the flower shop, then."

"Two jobs? You will have a lot of money, then," he said thoughtfully. "Can I come and visit you in the flower shop?"

She flushed a bit. "Three, actually, if you count clinic. The flower shop, and Wellspring too. But you can visit me any time you'd like, Jan."

A pause as she finished with the last of the stitches. "There you go. How's that fee?"

"Three jobs?!" He was so surprised, it took him a moment to register her question.

Then he bowed his head low to the ground, stretching, then lifted each foot as high as it would go. "Good! Much better. I can move again without fear of tearing them out." Jan went to whuffle her hair. "Thank you, Ino."

The whuffling got a laugh, and she went to throw her arms around his neck in a hug. "Just be careful for the next day or so, to take it a bit easy on them. The new skin's still a bit delicate. And, yes, three jobs."

Jan folded his neck over her shoulder, returning the hug. "I will take it easy, I promise."

"You'd better," she said, "or you'll have an unhappy sister to deal with."

He opened his eyes very wide and his ears curved outwards. "And that would be the very worst thing," he said, only half-teasing. "I'll be good."

Ino smiled at him. "Just warning you," she said. "It's important, you know. You got anything planned for today other than revelling in your new-found freedom?"

"Only that," he replied. "The Preserve has twisting trails that will be good to run on." He nosed her. "I wish you could run with me."

Her hands went up automatically to rest on his mane. "I wish I could too," she said sincerely. "Maybe I'll get lucky and get turned into a unicorn sometime, just to run with you."

"That would be wonderful." He snorted softly, and lifted one front hoof, putting it down again in the same spot, eager to run but not wanting to leave Ino.

She pressed a quick kiss to his neck. "Go run," Ino told him. "You can tell me about it later."

He whickered, nosed her again, turned -- carefully, not wanting to knock anything over -- and trotted outside.

He was cantering by the time he hit the grass outside the clinic, whinnying happily.

And deal with the nurses gossip!
