FTEC -- August 24 -- Sunday.

So things had somehow worked out that Adah wouldn't be leaving until tomorrow; the semester would be starting oddly in the middle of the week, which worked out well, she supposed. It gave her a chance to do this at least one more time. Most of it would be spent thinking about how much she still had to do, and the other half would be working on taking notes on all the more advanced technology that she'd horribly miss in '63.

Kevin was still pissed at Toby for possibly giving him an STD, so after lunch, he decided to go get it checked out.

He didn't like clinics; they reminded of that time he died and was turned into a zombie sex slave.

Nothing like a patient coming in to ruin Adah's very productive daydreaming. Her eyes shifted from where they were looking at some indistinct corner of the room to the guy who'd come in, and she blinked at him expectantly, waiting to see what he wanted. There weren't any missing limbs or profuse bleeding, so she figured it couldn't be that urgent. It was kind of nice, though, to have someone in on her last day.

"Um, hi," Kevin said, waiting for her to acknowledge him back while he tried to figure out the best way to present his... problem.

"...Hello," Adah said after another moment of just staring at him. He might have been confused about where he was, considering how it appeared she'd have to start pulling teeth here.

"How can I help you?"

"Well, ah..." He laughed, flashing a smile meant to cover up his discomfort. "I kind of have this rash," he explained. "Down there..." He nodded towards his crotch.

No, no, Adah. It was very unprofessional to laugh. Her lips pressed together a moment to carefully, expertly keep down any show or indication of any amusement.

"I see," she said, nodding slightly. "I take it you'll want to have it checked out? No general over-the-counter topical creams helping?"

Being the the rash was only just a small patch of chaffed skin from where Kevin's shorts had rubbed him the wrong way on a long jog, a little lotion would have probably done the job, but Kevin didn't know that.

"I was afraid to rub anything on it -- didn't want it to get worse or something. So yeah, I'd like to get it check out. I mean, it's on my little man." Totally cause for extreme concern. "I read that some of these things can cause it to, you know, fall off."

Adah had to respect a guy who would openly admit to her that it was little, she supposed, although she didn't know how she felt about giving it a closer inspection. Especially considering that it was likely to be just a rash in an unfortunate spot.

And that, clearly, she was not dealing with a medical genius here like herself. She shook her head slightly, reminding herself that she was going to have to start living by a code where the Hippocratic oath mattered and she shouldn't let the temptation of forsaking it sway her.

She reached for a clipboard. "If you could just fill this out, then, with your information and information about the symptoms, we'll then just step back and take a look (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/509420.html?thread=10538988#t10538988), okay?"

"Okay," Kevin replied, taking the clipboard and doing just that. Now that he was writing, it seemed so much more official and scary.

God, he wished Toby was here with him right now.

After limping to the first exam room, Adah opened the door for Kevin. "Would you like a moment of privacy to change into a clinic gown, or are you comfortable with just dropping trou?"

Don't laugh, Adah. Do not laugh. The poor idiot boy thought he was going to lose the most important thing in the world to him. It was not a laughing matter, really...

"No need to wait," Kevin said, kicking off his shoes and unbuttoning his jeans at the same time. He was quite adept at getting naked in a hurry.

As his pants hit the floor, he took a moment to admire his privates. He had had enough first-hand contact with male genitals to know that his were exceptionally nice.

"God, I hope this isn't serious," he whispered. In the back of his mind, he had always thought if nothing else worked out, he always had a career in gay porn.

Adah had to take a moment to just sort of rub her forehead a little, feeling the beginnings of some sort of headache coming, inspired merely by the fact that there was apparently a hurry in all of this and she could have sworn that, rash and all, this boy was admiring his own genitalia.

What a way to go out.

She shook her head, trying to shake all of that out and settle into the fact of the matter. "Have a seat," she said, nodding toward the exam table as the nurse helped her into some gloves. She almost thought about doubling them up, "and spread your legs. Now, did you say that the rash was actually on your penis, scrotum, or simply just in the general groin and-or thigh area?"

It was odd having a girl tell him to spread his legs, but he did as requested, wanting this to be over as quickly as possible. "It's right here," he said, pointing to the small patch of red tinted skin on the side of his penis.

Her frank talk about his genitals was surprisingly comforting. It made him feel as though he was in competent hands.

The latex of the glove snapped against Adah's wrist, resonating a little in the small exam room, and then Adah gave a slight glance over at Kevin before she took to a chair that she could roll over to her patient for the work, along with the cart of things she'd need. Despite her desire to just be straightforward and professional here, she couldn't help a small sigh over the fact that her last day here would involve...this. This was why she didn't want to go into general practice and would like to stick very closely to virology, thank you kindly. So there was a sigh and a moment to steel her resolve that the sooner she examined it, the sooner it would be over. She made certain that the way she took the...infected area...between her fingers to take a look was purely clinical.

She also tried not to think immediately of comparrisons regarding what had nothing to do with this current exam.

"Does it itch at all?" she asked, once she finally could focus on the abrasion of skin, checking for signs of blistering, cracking, or even bleeding.

"Not really," he replied. "Should it?" He really did want to be as helpful as possible. "I haven't had an pain peeing, either. I know that's sometimes a thing with these, um... things."

Yes. These things. Anyone with half a brain could tell that this was a purely epidermal rash just by looking at it; it was just a matter of figuring out exactly what caused it so that Adah could direct Kevin properly in treating and preventing it from happening again. "That's good," she said, "that you haven't had any pain in urination," because that would mean a whole new exam, "or itching, don't worry. Do you have any allergies? Anything particularly stressful going on in your life right now?"

Adah wondered, as she checked all sides of Kevin's penis, how people who were working in this field managed to do this every day, and shook her head slightly before finally, seeing all she hoped she needed to see, let him go and pulled her chair back a little, her eyes now distinctly settled up at Kevin.

"Well, I just got back together with my boyfriend, so things have been pretty good. He just, well, he thought I got this from messing around," which was totally possible, "but I'm safe when I'm not with him." He shrugged.

"I just noticed it yesterday morning while taking a shower after my run. Can you get stuff, like diseases and stuff, when you're the top? I always thought you had to be on the receiving end to catch... stuff."

Oh, this was almost just pathetic. With a quirk of her eyebrow, Adah decided that this poor dumb animal would probably just end up wandering the woods of idiocy forever if someone didn't give him at least a little bit of a nudge toward the clearing. She shook her head slightly. "Darlin'," she drawled, "you can catch 'diseases and stuff' no matter which end you're on; it's not a game of catch here; it's not a one way street. However, very few STDs will actually cause a rash like this. This," she nodded toward Kevin's crotch, "is probably more likely a mix of too tight shorts and chaffing."

She gave a slight pause, considering the rash a little more. "Until that rash is healed, though," she told him, "you are more susceptible to spreading and, especially, receiving a disease."

"So it's nothing serious?" he asked, needing more clarification. He wasn't too worried about that other part because he and Toby were back together, monogamous and worry free.

"Not as far as I can tell," Adah said, nodding slightly. "Just your average, run of the mill rash in a...less than convenient area. It isn't even jock itch if you don't have any burning or itching. We'll just get you a cream for it and you should be fine."

"That's awesome! I can't wait to go tell Toby," he said, excited by what felt like newfound sexual freedom.

He hopped up and starting getting dressed.

...wait a moment. Adah blinked, turning her chair slightly toward Kevin. If she stared, it had nothing to do with him dressing and everything to do with the combination of a few other facts that had been brought up.

"You're dating Toby?"

Raed Dog, those two were together? Well, if that wasn't a perfect example of a Darwinian cul-de-sac, she didn't know what was.

"Yeah, you know him?" Kevin asked, zipping up and grinning.

"A bit," Adah said with a nod, turning her chair toward a disposal so she could slide off her gloves. She decided against mentioning anything that brought to mind any sort of potential chaos she might have caused with her planting of the ideas of a bacterial soup onsen for Toby last night, especially if he'd talked to Kevin, and merely mentioned, as she threw the gloves out, "he's friends with my boyfriend. I think."

"He probably is. Toby makes friends with everybody. It's one of the things I love about him." Unless they were fighting, and then it annoyed the crap out of Kevin.

"Maybe we can all go out together sometime," he suggested. He knew Toby would love that.

Adah snorted, strong and clear; she couldn't help it. The idea of her double dating deserved a good snort. "As much as I'd love that," she smirked with sarcasm that she doubted Kevin would even notice, "I'm afraid it's a no-go. I leave tomorrow for college."

"Oh, wow. College, huh? You must be really smart." He didn't even pause to thing about the fact that the person he was trusting to diagnose his rash hadn't even been to college yet.

"Well, if your boyfriend is sticking around, I'm sure Toby will take good care of him. You can always count on him for stuff like that."

I swear to God, she's leaving tomorrow. I swear to it.

...but I think the universe is against the idea, and will send a meteor.
