The clinic was open and the doctor was in.

Stan was in the office today, oddly reflective.

A year will do that to a man.

Billy came by, just in case the Doc was in.

THe doc was indeed in. Like an in thing. But not like plaid. Plaid was never in.

It's a good thing Billy couldn't read minds. Cause he would have spent a long time trying to figure that out.

"Hey Doc, you missed the musical day."

Stan was still musing over Tinkerbell's offer of a new wardrobe. There may have been peril involved.

"I wouldn't say I missed it," he said wryly.

Billy snickered. "I could have sung my woes to you."

Stan barked a laugh. "Not a good day."

"So what's new, Mr. Kessler?"

"Well things have been going really well for me. Which is a very nice twist."

"That's good to hear, Mr. Kessler. School has been going well, then?"

"Yep. And I got accepted to the college I wanted down in Florida, and I had a great time over spring break with my family."

"Ah, college. Which university?"

What happened on spring break stayed on spring break. Unless penicillin was warranted.

"Eckerd College. It's near Tampa."

"Ah. Picked for the curriculum or for the beaches?" he asked with a quirked eyebrow.

"A little of both." Billy admitted. "There were lots of colleges that had good programs, that one had the campus that most appealed to me."

"Diverse coed community on a beach doesn't hurt, either," he said, completely straight-fced. Just ignore that eyebrow. "When do classes begin?"

"No it doesn't." Billy agreed. "Classes start next fall. I'm going to be studying Anthropology and Archeology."

"Plans for after graduation?"

"From Fandom? I don't know. I guess I forgot to think about that."

"For after college," Stan asked, eyebrows in their usual positions.

"Oh that. Well assuming I survive, I imagine I'll try for a graduate program, maybe a few internships. Something involving my chosen field. To be honest I haven't thought that far ahead."

"This island does tend to limit one's thinking and planning to the short-term," he noted.

He certainly was not talking about himself. Or the past year.

"It's not just the island." My whole life I've never really looked too far into the future, tell the truth before coming here I really lived day to day. It never occurred to me that I'd have a future. Thinking about all that is taking some getting used to."

"And now?" he asked pointedly.

"I'm still getting used to it. I think...I have no idea. Maybe in college I'll get one."

"College is a time to find one's self. Or to do things that you'd never thought you were capable of," he said.

"Just make sure that the pictures do not surface later on," he advised with a wry smirk.

Billy snickered. "I'll do that. Given as how I'll be back out in the world where my father is, I'll be pretty paranoid about pictures."

"Do make sure you keep yourself safe," he stated. "Most people just need to worry about the pictures surfacing during a job interview."

"Yeah well, most people don't have parents who occasionally try to kill them."

"This is true," he agreed. "Most just threaten, at most, or wish aloud. Any thoughts of travel? 'Finding yourself' in Europe or some such?"

"I might. Or Canada. I haven't seen much of Canada really."

"It's a lovely country. I might suggest sticking to the warmer months unless you're particularly fond of snow," he said wryly.

He wasn't particularly fond of snow. Not even icefishing made it better.

"Warmer sounds good to me. I don't mind snow but the weather I've heard about up there, no thanks."

"I'm sure the beach life will suit you," he said. "Just don't abandon all your warm clothes when you move," he said with a wry smile.

"I won't. Never know when this whole climate change thing will come and frost bite us in the ass."

"Which can be unpleasant, at best," he agreed.
