The episode of Hearts 'n' Scapels with the demonic possession was playing in the front lobby. It might not have been in the best taste, but Christian couldn't help it after reading over the reports from the weekend. Demonic-induced coma? Demonic-induced massive hemorrhaging? Christian had been called a demon by more than one woman, but even after being in Fandom for so long he had a hard time believing in them. That punk kid who looked like him and who claimed to be a demon was probably just trying to impress his girlfriend. Boyfriend. Whichever.

He stared at Dean, obviously startled.

After a moment, he realised he shouldn't have been. "It's not, I'm sorry. It's something only a Sun-priest can do," he said, almost apologetically. "But if you have need of me, I'll answer it, you have my word."

Dean let out a breath. "Yeah, kinda figured." He paused. "What can you teach me about Vkandis?"

"I can teach you anything you'd like to know. There is nothing secret or hidden in His faith." Karal was choosing his words with even greater care, now. "He demands that people use the intelligence they were gifted with, that they embrace their free will, their capacity to think and choose for themselves. It is that which He prizes above all."

"And he's awesome at kicking demon butt," Dean added with the trace of his usual smirk.

"And, yes, well." Karal shook his head and rubbed his forehead, laughing quietly. "I guess He is at that, though I cannot imagine anyone in Karse's reaction if you said it in such a way. It takes faith, though, Dean. Belief. He is not a god who will come for empty words and false praise, and nothing is without cost."

Dean sobered at that. "If there's one thing I know about, it's cost. As for faith, well, I admit to it not being something I maybe have had a lot of. But I haven't had a lot of gods actually stepping in and saving people I care about either."

He was getting a very odd feeling, a strange certainty, and the sense of an awareness in the room. "Dean," he said slowly. "Are you saying you would learn so you could follow the Sunlord? That you would choose Him as your own?"

Dean squirmed uncomfortably and shrugged, looking down at the blanket. "I don't know. I'm not sure any god would want me for a follower anyway."

"Oh, yes, because loyalty and courage and goodness are such terrible traits," Karal said dryly. "Not to mention risking one's life to do what's right, and to protect people you don't know from evils they never dreamed exist."

Dean squirmed again, this time from embarrassment. "Yeah, but my face isn't exactly next to the word reverent in the dictionary. Always figured I was more likely to get smited than saved or born again or whatever."

"Vkandis Sunlord would welcome you, Dean, gladly, just as you are." There was no room for any doubt in his voice and he met Dean's eyes. "He demands that a man come to Him having thought through everything for himself, which means I will have a great deal to teach you before you can make that choice."

"Well," Dean said slowly, "knowledge of someone who can do that to a demon is probably going to be useful anyway, so I guess you have yourself a student."

Karal could not help himself. He beamed at Dean. "First you have to heal, and promise not to ignore the hurts you can't see. And I," he chuckled, "will began translating The Writ into English."

"I'm not going to have wear any robes am I?" Dean asked. "No offense."

"Tempting as it is to say yes," he chuckled. "No. That is only for priests."

"Good. Yellow's not really my colour."

"Then you're going to hate the hat." Karal very carefully clasped Dean's shoulder. "I'm going to let you rest now."

"Thanks," Dean said, holding Karal's gaze. "For everything."

"You're more than welcome," he said, ducking his head after a moment. "Now, sleep and heal." Karal stood and made his way to the door. "Vkandis watch over you, Dean." And with the certain feeling that He was, Karal left.
