The clinic was open and empty, and Christian was bored. Currently he was surfing the net, catching up on the news from Miami.

Annette was clearly not here because she and A.J. had been discussing Dr. Troy last night. Nope. Not the reason at all.

"Hi," she said, approaching the counter slowly.

Christian glanced up from his laptop. "Hello," he said, looking Annette over.

"How are you today, Dr. Troy?" She asked softly.

"Bored out of my mind," Christian admitted. "How about you, how are you feeling? What brings you to the clinic?"

"I'm sorry for your boredom. Maybe I can keep you busy for a while," she said, still talking softly. "I'm feeling all right except for this itch in my throat. I think I might be coming down with something."

She entered the exam room and because she's done this a time or two before she settled herself on the table, crossing her ankles and swinging them lightly.

"Um. I haven't been here in a while. Should probably make everything current and up to date, uh?"

Christian raised an eyebrow. "You want a complete physical, then? Have you been having any health concerns?"

She flushed and met his eyes, "A complete physical? Uh, no..no..I don't think that is entirely necessary. Maybe, you know, just check my pulse. I have been..." she paused, thinking. "Tired lately. I'm not sleeping very well. And then there is this throat issue."

Nodding, Christian put his stethoscope on and moved to place it against Annette's back. "Take deep breaths and let them out slowly," he said. "How long has your throat been bothering you? Any coughing?"

She did as he asked and took deep breaths letting them out slowly. "It started hurting and feeling weird last night. I might have coughed once or twice."

Christian moved in front of Annette after listening to her breath. "I'm going to have to listen from the front, okay?" he warned.

Annette nodded, her heart beating faster, "All right."

Slipping his hand underneath Annette's shirt, Christian listened to her lungs and heart as she breathed. "Have you inhaled anything unusual recently?" he asked. "Any smoking? Any other symptoms besides the throat and cough?"

"Paint. But that was a week or so ago," she giggled and scrunched up her shoulders. It was cold. "I don't smoke and I haven't been around any that I can think of. Oh. But I have a cat now." Funny how she never thought about being allergic till now. "I don't sneeze though."

"Any fever or headaches?" Christian asked. "How's your appetite?" He drew back and fetched a tongue depressor. "Open up and say ahhh," he instructed.

"Headaches, no fever that I'm aware of," she stated and added, "I don't eat as well as I should but not because I don't feel good." Her eyes followed his movements and she opened her mouth when he came back, "Ahhhhh."

Christian slid his instrument into Annette's mouth not dirty at all, really, and peered down her throat. "I'm wondering if it's mono," he said. "But I'll need to do a blood test to be certain."

She blinked at him and forgot how big some of those tongue depressors could be not dirty, nope, because her gag reflexes were just not that great. "What? Mono? But...how? I mean...blood tests?" Mono?

"Mono isn't uncommon among teenagers," Christian said, withdrawing the tongue depressor when he was finished. "It's passed by kissing, sometimes coughing." He moved his hands to Annette's neck, gently feeling to see if she had any swollen glands.

"Yes, but I don't go around kissing people. Wouldn't I have to go around kissing people? Or...being in their faces when they coughed?" She looked up at him as he felt her neck.

"You haven't been kissing anyone?" Christian asked, looking Annette in the eyes.

He had amazing eyes, really. "Just one person. Only one person."

"Has he been feeling tired, too?" Christian asked. "Or have a sore throat?"

"No, not that he as mentioned. I, uh, haven't seen a whole lot of him lately."

"Really?" Christian said, making a few notes in Annette's chart. "This the same guy you were seeing before? The one who might be gay?"

"Yes, that's him, but he's not gay. Not at all." She said pointedly, making sure Dr. Troy heard her correctly. "No. He's not."

Oh dear. Annette turned ten shades of red and looked down at her lap, nodding.

"Well, that's one mystery solved," Christian chuckled. "You are practicing safe sex, right?"

Again, Annette nodded but thought she better tell him since he was her doctor, "I mean we are, but not on my part." She still couldn't look at him and dangit! this was the whole point of her visit. Basically.

"Not on your part?" Christian said, a hint of a scolding on his part. "Condoms, I take it, that he supplies? If you're going to be sexually active, I'd recommend getting on the pill, just to be on the safe side."

Annette glanced up at his tone, and her brow wrinkled. "We're not that sexually active. Just every now and then -" and she realized that didn't make it any better. "- and all right, Dr. Troy. I trust your judgement. Do I still have to have blood tests?"

"I'd recommend it just as a precaution," Christian said. "In the meantime, rest up and drink plenty of fluids, and if the sore throat doesn't go away in a few days, come back for another exam."

"Okay," she said looking down at her lap.

Afterwards, assuming blood was drawn Annette hopped down from the table and said as she began to walk towards the door. "Next Friday - I'll come in then? Find out the results and...maybe you can check my throat again to make sure all is well?"

Christian nodded, disposing of the needle in the biohazard waste bin. "But if you start feeling worse, come in sooner, okay?"

"I will, Dr. Troy, thank you," Annette smiled at him, feeling very good that she had made the choice to come in and see him. She was just hoping she didn't have mono.
