FTEC - Wednesday Day Shift 4/11

Wilson was on the phone as he came through the door chatting about brain tumors but when the nurse came towards him with a chart in her hand, Wilson quickly shut off the call and focused on his patient here in the clinic.

Reading through Steerpike's chart, he peppered the nurse with questions about the young man's vitals and state of comfort this morning before signing off on the chart and setting himself a time to make rounds and visit the patient.

Sending the nurse on back, he set up his laptop and flipped his cell phone back open to finish his call.

Annette rung the bell.

"I heard about Stickpoke on the radio. I was just curious to see how he is doing. I mean I don't want to visit him or anything like that. I don't have much time. I was just..." She paused a moment to gather her thoughts. "Is he going to die?"

"Yeah, that's what I said." He was being awfully curt with her and it made her frown, wondering why. "I was just wondering how he was." She looked down at her feet.

"That's good to know." she said, barely looking up at him. Then, for want of anything better to say because he seemed angry with her, she said, "You look nice today."

Before his soon to be played lunch with Abby, Aziraphale stopped in at the clinic. Knowing that Wilson was still dealing with the consults that were being phoned in, he brought a thermos of tea and a bag of pastries for the young doctor to snack on.

Setting them on the desk, he snuck a kiss while no one was watching, and then settled into his usual chair in the corner.

Nadia came in between classes with a small bouquet of flowers. "Hi, Dr. Wilson. Can you tell me where . . ." Oh, crap, what was that kid's name? "Steerpike is?"

Steerpike lay on his back and stared up at the ceiling.

This was really going to put quite a damper on his plans.

Nadia had in theory gotten the room number from Dr. Wilson and stopped in to see Steerpike. She set the flowers down by the head of his bed and just kind of stood quietly.

Not that Steerpike noticed either event, of course. He'd fallen asleep again, though it didn't seem to be a terribly easy one.

He was mumbling, for one thing. Something about stages and numbers.

Huh. That was odd. Nadia leaned in a bit closer to try and listen.

"Did the one," Steerpike mumbled. "Not lost. . . . Move on to next. . . ."

Curiouser and curiouser. "Did the one what, Steerpike?" Nadia asked quietly, and mostly rhetorically.

"Fire's getting bigger," Steerpike mumbled. "Get them out,"

Well, that didn't really tell her anything, either. Nadia frowned, then pulled a book, just a simple paperback, out of her backpack and put it down next to the flowers.

She had no idea if Annette's suspicions were right or not, but no one should be stuck in the clinic all alone with nothing to do.

Unnoticed to her, there was a bit of notebook paper stuck between some of the pages of that book. Just some notes, really. Nothing big.

"Feel better, Steve-mike," Nadia gave him one last look over, feeling a pang of guilt at her satisfaction that at least now, he looked much less like Walter. "You don't want to miss the prom."

Then she turned to leave.

Steerpike kept mumbling and kept sleeping. But when he woke up, he would certainly appreciate the book, if not the foolish sentiment of the flowers.
