"Okay, that's not a problem," said Janet, raising an eyebrow at the bruises around Lana's throat. She stood and gestured back at the clinic. "I think we should go into the exam room before we talk any more, don't you?"
Lana shifted her weight from foot to foot uneasily, tugging up the turtleneck that kept slipping down. "I, um... need..." she swallowed hard, nausea threatening to overwhelm her again. "I need to be checked for pregnancy and any STDs."
Janet nodded, her slightly widened eyes the only possible sign of shock. "We can do that, and keep it confidential. Do you need referrals to a trauma counselor?"
She really, really hoped that Lana didn't need a referral.
"I..." Lana swallowed hard again. "I don't remember anything, so I don't think it would do any good. I just want to make sure... I don't know who I might have had sex with or whether they used protection, and..." She shook her head, not wanting to go on.
"It's okay, Lana," said Janet gently. "I can give you an exam, and run the tests myself, if you want, and we don't have to let anyone know what you were here for. Does that work?"
Lana nodded, feeling tears fill her eyes. "Yes. Please. That would work very well."
God. She didn't know what she'd do if she was pregnant. She wouldn't have any way of knowing whose it was. It could even be Jim's. They were pretty careful about using protection, but nothing was perfect.
Janet moved closer, wondering if Lana would welcome a hug. "It's going to be all right," she told Lana firmly. "If anything turns up, we'll take care of it."
"Exactly," said Janet. She smiled wryly. "Unfortunately, finding out is...awkward. I'll need to give you a sample cup, and you'll have to change into a hospital gown." She started rummaging for supplies.
"Not knowing what was done with your body for a week is awkward," Lana replied, taking the cup and the gown. "I'll just..." She gestured to the bathroom and headed in.
When she returned, she carefully placed the cup on the counter and slipped up onto the exam table, shuddering as she remembered her encounter with Dr. Troy when she'd come to get stitches.
"You know, I've been in that situation," said Janet. She started prepping for the exam. "And in the situation with the exam you're going through now, and the rest of the uncomfortable aftermath. I hated every minute of it."
The exam didn't take long, though Janet did a thorough if handwavey job.
Lana just lay back on the table, one arm over her face to try and hide the tears that just kept slipping out no matter how hard she tried. When it was over she sat up with relief, tugging the gown around her.
"Now you get to try and think of something else for a few minutes, while I run all the tests." Janet smiled reassuringly and reached for Lana's hand, to see if she could pat it gently. "Don't assume that something is wrong. Everything could be perfectly fine."
Lana let Janet pat her hand. She felt reassured by her calm attitude. "Thanks. And thanks for earlier - telling me you'd been through something similar. It helps."
Still, she sat nervously, biting her lip and trying not to think of what she'd tell Jim if things didn't work out well.
Once she'd gone, Lana wrapped her arms around herself tightly and just rocked back and forth. It would be okay. It had to be. One way or another it would work out.
Lana swallowed hard, bracing herself for the worst. Part of her wanted to just run, but she'd only have to come back to find out another time. "Okay," she managed.
"Thanks," Lana said, finally managing to get herself up out of the chair. "Okay, I'm going to head home now. I know I'm going to sleep a lot better than I did." She managed another smile for her. "I'll see you around."

She dropped her head, feeling choked up again. "Things have been hard enough without telling him I'm pregnant or have an STD."
