FTEC - Wednesday Day Shift 3/7

Wilson grumbled as he made his way through the rainy weather down to the clinic. Why couldn't it be snow? Honestly, if this much moisture was going to fall from the sky, it ought to be a proper snow.

Shaking himself off, he talked quietly with the on duty nurse, catching up on the two patients still in residence, as he shrugged out of his overcoat and set his briefcase down behind the front desk. Taking the charts, he checked in on Ami and Liz, making detailed notes for their files before quietly slipping back out of the rooms.

Once back at the front desk, he pulled out his laptop and a couple of journals and settled down to work on yet another paper.

Liz had somehow managed to get a few hours sleep where she wasn't disturbed by nightmares but it wasn't long before they returned. She found that it was just easier to stare at the ceiling and block everything else out.

John poked his head in to see how Liz was doing.

Liz still wasn't doing any better but she would respond if she was spoken to.

"Hey. Whaddya in for?" John cracked a smile.

"So I don't harm myself," she said in a voice that was barely above a whisper.

JOhn's smile dissapeared. "Why's that?" he said, quietly.

Liz was silent for several minutes as she considered what she say, she really wasn't up for explaining anything but she didn't know how else she could explain her situation, "it happened again..." she said softly.

"It happened again?" He paused, wondering how best to proceed and chose so very wrongly.

"You... turned into a salamander and did a song and dance before leaping through a flaming hoop?" he said softly.

Liz actually wished that was what had happened but it wasn't. She sighed, knowing full well that the only way she was going to explain was by showing her powers. She raised one of her hands and summoned the flames, since she was too weak to maintain them they vanished after only several seconds had passed. "The fire..." she whispered.

John stared at her hands. "You.. fire... I have the sudden urge to get marshmallows." He then clapped his hand over his mouth as soon as he realized what he had said.

"I take it that means you didn't just burn the muffins. How bad was it?"

"You wanna talk about it?" John wasn't sure if he should come in or not.

Liz struggled to keep from crying, "I lost control of powers...I..."

John walked over to the bed and laid a hand near her foot. "And what happened?"

"I...burnt a city block," she whispered.

John was quiet. "It spiraled out of hand?"

"I couldn't stop it...some kids from school threw rocks at me and then...I lost control,"

"Kids are very cruel. I should know. I was one." He gave a wry smile. "You lashed out in anger, in fear, and you didn't have control. Recent power?"

"I wasn't angry, I was terrified...they had started chasing me that morning when I left for school, I tried to get away from them but I wasn't quick enough..." she whispered, "I've known about my abilities since I was 7 even though they took some time to emerge. There's been several isolated incidents but nothing like what happened last year,"

"When we're angry, when we're scared, our emotions run high. THey're hard to control. We say things in anger, in pain, that we'd never say in our right mind. I imagine it's like that with powers, whether something innate or something new, to just... push 'em away. Make 'em stop. Tell the goddamn future to stick it's fucking Skynet up it's ass sideways."

"In the moment, it's easy to forget friend or foe. Freeze stiff, or take a shot you shouldn't. Lose yourself to instinct. It's... sometimes it's natural."
