FTEC, Monday Day Shift

Granny was laid out in Exam Room Two, clutching a sign that said "I ATEN'T DEAD".

[Will be AFK for most of the day, so will have to do slowplay.]

Seras eyed him.

"Is this whole 'there's either a problem or there's not' a boy thing? Or a butler thing? Or a Walter Dornez thing?"

She shrugged.

"Human beings aren't machines, Walter. You can't take a tool kit to them and fix what's wrong. Nothing about me's been repaired, so to speak. But, I'm still here. That'll have to be enough, for now."

Walter made a face at her eying him and her comment. "You were acting as though there were a big problem, now I can't tell. Is it a girl thing or a Seras Victoria thing to do that?

"If things aren't working with you, you're the only person to fix it, right? Your friends will listen, but we don't know your mind."

He certainly didn't know Seras' mind.

That last comment gave Seras pause. During her time in the orphanages, many a trained professional had tried to 'fix' her. Obviously, none of it had worked. So, maybe she should try her hand at fixing herself.

"I have got a problem. A few of them. But, as you say, I'm on my own when it comes to fixing them. So, tell me what books you've brought me."

"I didn't know what your tastes were, so there's some science fiction, a bodice ripper - don't look at me like that - and some current novel about an evil fashion editor and her assistant, 'Satan wears Gucci.'" Walter pushed the table in her reach and put a pen on it. "And a book of crossword puzzles."

Seras decided that she was going to look at Walter any damn way she chose.

"This (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y113/haunted_pumpkin/sicon87.jpg) is to get back at me for having you ask Alfred if he's a robot, isn't it?" she said, "Which, as I recall, you promised to do today."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Walter snickered and shook his head. "I've seen some of the girls at school reading books like that. How was I to know whether you'd like it or not?"

Okay, yes, he'd been pretty sure she wouldn't go for it.

Seras stuck her tongue out at him and read the back of the science fiction novel. This, at least, looked interesting, and not too unlike the Louis L'Amour novels she was so fond of. Only instead of horses, the cowboys drove space ships.

She looked up and managed another smile.

"Thanks, Walter," she said, "I know I was pretty much the Oxford definition of 'useless' on Saturday. And, when no one came to see me, even to let me know that everything turned out okay, I was starting to think..."

She trailed off and started to flip through the crossword puzzle book.

Walter shook his head. "I'm sorry, Seras. I wasn't even around yesterday until the evening. This was my first real opportunity to check in on you."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seras chuckled but kept her eyes on the book.

"Just as well, really. I was too dizzy to really sit up and my nose wouldn't stop bleeding. I was a mess..."

She cleared her throat.

"I really hate hospitals."

"Then leave? If it's just your head, someone can keep watch over you." Said the person who had made his escape from the clinic in a wheelchair.

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I can't. Not everyone's got your constitution, Walter. And, I've got to be careful if I'm going to be a proper cop. You need to be fit, and head injuries can effect your balance and your aim."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"That's your choice, then. I know Nadia has been concussed more than once, and really all that was needed was watching her to ensure nothing got worse. That's as easily done in the dorms as here."

He shrugged. "But if you feel that you're better off here, you're better off here."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Seras nodded.

"I'm going to give it one more day in the clinic," she said, "That way I won't need to bother people in the dorms."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"It isn't a bother, just so you know." Still, stubborn girl, he didn't expect her to change her mind. "At least you can have a distraction."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I have a distraction," said Seras, holding up her new books.

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Right." He stood up and brushed out his trousers. "I still have to be on to work, but I will stop by to see you tomorrow."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"I may have checked out tomorrow," she said, "But I will want to see you. You've got to tell me whether or not Mr. Pennyworth's a robot, after all."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
"If you check out, I'll walk back up to the dorms with you. Just in case."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Seras smiled.

"That's good of you. Thanks. And, thanks for the books and for coming to see me as well."

She sighed.

"It looks as though I'm going to have to take a raincheck on my swing lesson," she said, sounding genuinely disappointed.

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I think swinging you around with your head like this is not the best idea," Walter said, shrugging. "But we'll reschedule. Maybe for later this week."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Definitely," she said, "Damned if I'm going to let a squid on steroids spoil my dance lessons."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Certainly not. I'll see you tomorrow, Seras. Don't let this place bother you."

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Tomorrow."

Seras shrugged.

"I'll do my best."
