Stark's ears were still ringing a bit after the screaming sun planet so he'd thought he'd misheard the nurses when they explained Stabby was getting ready for the trip.

"Where's he going?" Stark asked once he understood.

"He thinks he's going to France. That's why the baguette."

"But he's not."

"We didn't have the heart to tell him he had to be a student or a teacher."

Stark shook his head and sat down at the desk with his coffee. Which was still very sugary even after the trip to the chocolate and ice cream planet.

The clinic was open, the alien was in, and the crab was in for a world of disappointment.

Arthur had not been set free.

Arthur had ~~handwavily~~ tried to make a break for it a couple of times, but the nurses were good. The last time, they'd threatened to hide all the crutches he shouldn't have anyway, so now he was back in bed, John sulkily reading National Geographic and Arthur sulkily pretending he wasn't listening.

"You must be feeling better if you've tried to escape," Stark said when he came in to check on the patient.

"I am feeling fine," Arthur protested. "Look, I understand I still need to heal, and probably eat more, but surely I can do that from a hotel? I don't even need any more medication, do I?"

He absolutely needed to take antibiotics for longer, but someone would probably have to explain that to him. And he probably could use a lot more pain medication than he was willing to take.

"We could use something new to read, too," John groused.

"I think you still do," Stark said.

And for some reason the nurses didn't seem confident that Arthur would take it on his own? Weird.

"Otherwise we wouldn't still be giving it to you. Is there are anything I can get for you today? Or do for you? Besides letting you out because I can't do that. But you should be able to see the doctor tomorrow."

Arthur thunked his head back on the pillow, sighing.

"Something new to read, maybe? If I am in the future, there's got to be something to help me learn about it. Hell, at this point I'd take a good gossip rag."

"I don't know if you're in your future, but you're in my now," Stark said. "I'll see what I can find for you to read."

The nurses were bound to have something of interest.

"Is there something specific you might like?"

"That's a strange way of putting it."

"I don't even know." Arthur gestured helplessly. "What are some important things to know?"

Stark put things strangely sometimes. That was just how he was.

"About what? This place? Summer and I have a whole class for that at the school right now."

"Is there a textbook for it?" Arthur asked.

"No. No book. It's just us. We took a field trip today."

Stark was sparing you the knowledge of where and how they got there, Arthur!

Meanwhile, Arthur was increasingly of the opinion that this school was the sort of upper-class nonsense he hated. Largely because he'd had to deal with it himself as a child.

For now, though, he sighed again. "Well, where would you start if you were suddenly dropped here?"

"I was suddenly dropped here, once," Stark told him. "I wanted to know where I was. Nearly all of it was new. I'm not even from Earth. Some of it is still new and it's been years now. You at least know where Maryland is."

The more they spoke, the more Stark reminded Arthur of Lorick.

"Assuming it's the same place as I'm used to it being," he pointed out, "but yes. But I know nothing about...wait, maybe a history book! Something to learn about whatever's happened here since 1934."

"Assuming that's the same as in our world."

"Even if it isn't my world's history, it's the history of this place."

"I think we could find something. At the school or one of the shops or maybe one of the nurses has something. I don't have many books. Mostly cookbooks."

To Serve Man was not one of them, don't worry Arthur. Not that anyone in the room would understand the reference.

"I'm not really much for cooking, anyway," Arthur admitted. And ~~yes, tbq~~ To Serve Man was much more Hannibal's speed.

"I don't suppose I could go down to the shops myself and get one." Yeah, it was barely a question; he figured he knew the answer on that, but he had to try.

"Not today," Stark said.

Nice try, Arthur.

"Soon, I'm sure."

"If it isn't soon, I'm breaking out of here," Arthur declared.

Which would mean he wouldn't have antibiotics and he'd probably get reinfected and end up back here for longer, and you didn't want that, did you, Stark?

Stark was not the physician of record, Arthur, and thus unable to take responsibility here.

"I'm sure it will be soon. Ask Will tomorrow. He'll know better than I will, especially about your leg."

"Assuming he can actually get here, instead of being stymied by a...I don't even know what it was. Some crab monster with an apple something?" Arthur groused.

Maybe if Dr. Halsted was stuck outside again, he could bully the nurses into letting him go out to meet him.

He lived in ~~delusion~~ hope.

"There was an apple," Stark said. "That's what the squirrels said, anyway. But Stabby isn't a monster. Just a crab. He lives in a tank at the front desk."

Normal things to say, all of them.

"The squirrels said there was an apple," Arthur repeated slowly, as if that would make it make more sense. "And there's a crab living in a tank at the front desk." That part didn't sound too bad, though it would make more sense in a restaurant than a clinic.

"Are any of these words euphemisms?"
