She's here, examining blood again. It's her thing.

Mercy made it through the door on her own power - barely - and smiled a little ruefully at the girl there. "Hi. I could use some assistance. I, um... got shot while I was across the causeway. Not life-threatening or anything. More... embarrassing and painful."

As being shot in the ass with buckshot could be.

Caroline waved a little as she stood behind, trying to not breathe in the lovely smell of fresh blood. "I just brought her here, not the shooter or the victim. Um, I'll just wait or something."

It was a good test of her control.

"Thank you, Caroline," Scully said, giving Mercy a concerned look as she held open the exam room door for her. "I appreciate it, and I'm sure she does too."

"She totally does," Mercy said in an attempt at lightness. "Thank you so much."

She started to follow Scully into the exam room, then paused for a second. "You don't have to wait, but... I'd be kind of grateful for company on the way back to the cabins."

"Let's get you settled in here, see what's going on."

Mercy limped in and over to the examination table. "I was stupid and got shot in the behind," she said, feeling foolish. "Some of the buckshot bounced off, but I know there's some embedded."

Hopefully Scully wouldn't notice that there didn't seem to be any holes in the fabric of the pants.

Scully forebore from even smiling; as silly as that kind of injury sounded, it was always painful, and had to be dealt with. "Lie down on your stomach, after you take off your jeans," she instructed. "I'll get the tweezers and antiseptic. This shouldn't require any anesthetic, but it won't be fun for you."

"Unfortunately, it's not the first time," Mercy said ruefully as she shucked off her jeans. Shifters didn't have much modesty. You got over it quickly when you had to get naked to change.

She managed to get up onto the table with only a few muffled groans.

"Are you hurt anywhere else?" Scully checked, brow wrinkling in concern as she returned with bandages and supplies for taking out the buckshot. The injury to Mercy's left leg and buttock was obvious, but ... something was odd about it. "How far away was the shooter when he took aim?"

"Um... I'm not really sure?" Uh oh. The other girl seemed to know something wasn't quite right. "Close enough that I got hit, but not so close that he did real damage? And no, not hurt anywhere else."

"I'll try to be gentle about this. It looks like about..." She counted. "Ten pellets hit you, more or less. You're lucky, it could have been much more." Scully carefully peeled Mercy's underwear upward, to expose more of the injury, and reached for the swabs, part of her brain preoccupied. "Why did he shoot at you?" Mercy had to have been running away, to judge by the angle of entry.

"I was out, sort of exploring, and I guess I ended up trespassing on some rancher's land. He yelled and I heard a shotgun ratchetting and I just bolted. Didn't quite manage to evade the second blast."

Which was true as far as it went, but Mercy had a sinking feeling she was going to have to shift to explain things.

"Remind me to take my gun with me when I explore across the Causeway," Scully said absently, carefully positioning the tweezers to extract the first shot. "Tell me if this hurts too much, and I'll give you a shot, but I'd rather not have to do that if you can take this." The first pellet came out easily, and she dropped it with a 'plink' into the basin she'd brought.

Mercy bit her lip and dug her fingers into the edge of the table, but didn't flinch. Much. "I'll be fine," she said.

Anesthetics were tricky in Fandom. For something she could do this quickly, it was better to wait until it was done. "Yell if you change your mind." A second and third pellet plinked next to the first. "He must have been aiming from... a window?" The angle on the shot wasn't just from behind, but from above. At least a thirty-degree angle. Strange.

"He, um... maybe?" It was hard to handle the pain stoically and come up with not-quite-lies for Scully at the same time. "I... was running."

Two more. "Half-way done. You're doing great." The rest were stuck in the muscle of her buttock-- less pain, but harder to get out. "I'm amazed you managed to keep running after this." Scully gave Mercy a look of concern. "How far were you from the Causeway? You're going to need to rest after this."

"I run fast?" Mercy suggested. Oh man. Her story was sounding less and less plausible every minute. "And yeah, that's why Caroline had to help me here. Honestly, all I want to do right now is rest."

Six... "Smart. I'm going to have to give you an antibiotic shot, and one for tetanus after this." Scully's lips twitched. "On the other side. God knows what 19th Century buckshot carries." Shudder. And seven. Plink. Some of this just did not make sense. "You know if there's anything else you want to tell me, you can, right?" Eight.

Mercy sighed. "I know. Look... after we're all done here I'll show you, okay? Then it will all make sense. Or... more sense anyway."

Scully had been at Fandom for a while. A girl who could change into a coyote probably wasn't the strangest thing she'd seen. Besides...

"Um... we have that whole doctor patient privilege thing going, right?"

"Nine..." That one took a little more digging, which Scully felt bad about, but the last one was barely on the surface and only took a second. "And ten. Done." She swabbed the surface of Mercy's skin again and confirmed, "Yes, we definitely have doctor-patient confidentiality going on. I'd like to make a note in your file about what you tell, in case another doctor needs to treat you, but the Clinic maintains need-to-know, and no one in the practice would go looking for any reason unless they needed to. Don't get up yet, I'm getting the bandages in place."

Mercy let out a huge breath of relief and let her head fall forward onto the table for a moment. "Look. Wait on the bandages for a minute, okay?

Scully blinked, bandages and tape in hand, and cocked her head. "Okaaay..."

Mercy sighed, then slid gingerly off the table and stripped off the rest of her clothes. "Sorry, completely necessary since wriggling out of them after like this would be miserable."

She took a deep breath and then shifted into her coyote form. No doubt Scully would be able to see how the weird buckshot pattern suddenly made sense.

"What---" Scully frowned, unfazed by the stripping, but then blinked. A lot.

"Ahhhhhhhh." Blink. Blink. Blink. "...wait. A coyote?!" What??

The coyote gave her an apologetic look and then expanded back into Mercy, who slipped into all but her jeans with a miminum of groaning. "I'm a walker. I can shift into a coyote and I was out running when the rancher saw me and, well... you know the rest."

She climbed back up and lay on her stomach so Scully could finish bandaging and just waited for the questions.

"Doesn't that hurt?" Scully asked, fascinated. "I've known a werewolf here, but not -- anyone who could turn into something else." She shook herself, then reached for the syringes, loading the antibiotic and tetanus shots. "No wonder the angle was all wrong."

Mercy shook her head. "Nope. No pain for me. The werewolves who raised me take about 12 to 15 agonizing minutes to shift, but then I was born this way so... It just makes me hungry if I shift too many times close together."

Or after running all over and then limping home or something, you know.

Scully proceeded to apply the bandages, shaking her head. "Then I'm going to recommend a big meal, in addition to 24-hour bed rest to give those a chance to heal. Do you heal up any faster than a human?" She reached for the antibiotic syringe, and added, "You're not going to want to sit down for a while, anyway, between the buckshot and these shots."

Mercy nodded. Food was definitely a priority. "Unfortunately, I heal human slow. But I only have one class tomorrow and then I have the whole weekend to rest up."

"Good," Scully approved, then gave her the tetanus shot. "It's normal for either of the shot sites to be sore for a couple days, too, but if you have a stronger reaction, you should come back in. You can get dressed now." She shook her head, still trying to get her mind around were-coyotes. Wait. "You can shift any time, not just with the moon, is that right? Would that help the healing at all, since you took the original wound in that form?"

Mercy shook her head. "I don't get any of the cool abilities, but then silver doesn't hurt me. I can shift whenever I want, but it doesn't affect how I heal."

She got a worried look on her face. "Hey, I know there's at least one werewolf here, though he's more a shifter like me than a real werewolf, but where I'm from it's all kept secret. Like on pain of death secret, so please don't say anything, okay?"

"I promise." Scully shook her head. "I'm not about to tell you more about my friend either, even if they're pretty open about it. So don't worry about that. I'll note it in your file, in case you come limping in here as a coyote again, though."

"Thanks," Mercy said with a tired smile. "For everything. You were almost as good at that as Doc Wallace and he's had lots of practice."

"You're welcome," Scully said, quirking a smile sideways. "Just try to be a little more careful out there... and if you get shot again, call. I'll be happy to provide ambulance service."

Mercy managed a small laugh. "Don't worry. I don't think I'll be shifting again anytime soon."

She hissed as she pulled her stiff with blood jeans up over the bandages. "Okay. It's home with a brief stop to get take-out food somewhere for me. Maybe I'll see you around under better circumstances sometime."

"Do you have anyone who can check on you and make sure you're not running a fever?" Scully checked. "One of your cabin mates, or Caroline maybe?"

"Caroline probably would," Mercy agreed. "Or I can ask one of my roommates." Stephanie might be a better choice than Spock.

"Okay. Call if you do, I can get you a prescription for more antibiotics once someone here checks you out if that's necessary. Otherwise, rest, get a lot of fluids, and hopefully next time I see you the soreness will have worn off." Scully's lips twitched. Because it was a little funny.

Mercy could smell Scully's amusement and couldn't really be bothered by it because, yeah, it was kind of funny. "I will," she said and headed for the door to see if Caroline was still waiting for her. "Thanks again."
