FTEC, Monday (5/2)

It wasn't Scully's usual day at the Clinic, but like that was going to stop her when she didn't have classes.

The nurses were keeping an eye on things after last night's late arrival.

[ocd on its way up!]

After a restless night, Leda returned to the clinic, hoping to find if there'd been any change in Triela's condition.

Triela was, indeed, unconscious but stable. She looked a lot younger and softer asleep. Almost smiling as she breathed slowly in and out. Hilshire was sitting next to her bed, awake. It didn't look like he'd actually gone to sleep at all since Triela collapsed, either. Which was to say: he looked rather awful.

Raven woke up in the clinic that morning after passing out the night before. She still felt drained and weak, but she managed to get up and find Triela's room to check on her, happy to find she was stable at least, but fretting about what she could do now to help her.

She didn't know who Hilshire was, and her tiredness may have made her sound a little less than entirely polite when she asked, "Who are you?"

Hilshire looked up a bit blearily. He was tired, exhausted, really. And not just physically.

He'd known this was coming, but that didn't make him okay with it, and it certainly didn't make it any less painful. Not that he'd say so.

"Hilshire. Triela's handler."

"You are responsible for this?" Raven said, just making sure she had this clear. She didn't like the sound of the word "handler."

It took a second before Hilshire answered.

"I suppose that's a fair accusation."

"Then what are you doing here now?" Raven said testily. "Pretending to mourn what you have done?"

Tired though she was, she turned her gifts toward him to read his emotions and what he truly felt now.

"What makes you think that?" Hilshire asked, voice thick with exhaustion. His tone was calm, controlled.

A direct contrast to his emotional state. Hilshire felt like a man who'd made the only coice he could have made, and was still nearly overwhelmed with regret. He couldn't have lived with a different choice, but that didn't mean he was sure he could live with the one he'd made.

"She is dying, and even with all my gifts, it seems there is little I can do to stop it," Raven said. She hated making that admission.

"And it is your fault. You have done this to her," she accused. She wasn't sure yet what to make of that regret.

Emma didn't even give a first glance, let alone a second, to the man when she walked in, carrying a small bag with one of Triela's favorite suits, neatly folded. A change of clothes, a hairbrush, one of her bears.

The clothes were set off to the side and the bear tucked in with her. Honestly, if Emma had thought she could manage to steal one of Triela's guns and smuggle it in, she would have let the girl cuddle one of those - unloaded, of course - but the bear would do for now.

She wasn't there for him. Hilshire was smart enough to know that.

It didn't stop him from speaking, though. Softly, perhaps, but speaking nonetheless.

"Thank you."

"Mmmm." Emma settled herself cross-legged in a chair, taking out a small notepad and a pen from her purse. She very carefully slipped off the two sapphire earrings that had been dampening her still-raw telepathy since Saturday.

Her eyes went unfocused as she picked up the pen and started making notes, carefully picking her way through the minefield that was Triela's brain. "Hilshire then, I presume," she remarked abruptly after a few moments, still writing away. "Odd. You seem taller through the lens of her mind."

Hilshire nodded. "Miss Frost." He was guessing, but Triela did give very good reports, so he probably wasn't wrong.

Of course he didn't actually know how to respond to that comment. It wasn't the kind of thing you thanked someone for, even if you were flattered in a bittersweet kind of way.

"'Thank you' is still considered a generally acceptable response when stymied by impossible situations that might be implied as mildly flattering." Mean, Emma. Stay out of the nice man's head.

[identity profile] sie-bruder.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hilshire seemed unphased by her response.

Or, rather, he was so wrapped up in Triela's situation that dealing with a too-smart blond girl reading his mind just wasn't that big a concern. "Thank you," he murmured absently.

"I'm fine," Hilshire answered in a dry rasp. "But thank you for the offer."

"I'm not going to do her any good no matter what I do," Hilshire countered. But he took the water, twisted the cap off, and drank half the bottle in one go.
