FTEC, Tuesday

Martha had planted herself at the front desk with a large coffee and the latest inventory check. She was certain that something in the invoice didn't add up, but she hadn't figured out what yet. Once she did, there was a supply company that was going to be on the receiving end of a very angry phone call.

Scully had decided that two sets of eyes were better than one, and since Triela had given her permission, checking in with the clinic head was a good idea. "Dr. Jones, do you have a moment?"

"Oh, absolutely," Martha said, with possibly a little too much enthusiasm. Anything that would save her from the inventory was a blessing right now. "What do you need?"

"A consultation about a patient, a fellow student. Triela." She handed over the folder she'd started last Thursday (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/668729.html), and settled into one of the chairs. "She's given permission for me to look for treatments with other doctors here, or healers on the island. Her condition is fairly serious, and I wanted to see if you had any ideas for helping her deal as well."

Martha looked over the folder and frowned deeper the further into it she got. "This is about a student?" she asked, looking over the charts. She was never going to get over the things done to some of the students here. "Did you notice her symptoms, or did she come to you on her own?"

Scully folded her arms and sighed. "I was on the gun range-- I've seen Triela there before. She seemed to be having difficulty, for her. Her marksmanship was still excellent, but took more effort. She admitted," her voice quieted. "That her own doctors back in Rome have given her a prognosis of only a few more months. I offered to give her a second opinion."

"A few months is far too short a time," Martha said sadly, "especially for something that isn't a random or unusual disease. Surely, with our resources here, there's something more we can do. I'd be happy to look into it as well." Happy might not have been the right word, but she couldn't think of a better way to phrase her willingness to help. "Although it certainly looks as though you know what you're doing so far."

"Thank you," Scully said, her face turning slightly red, and her tone becoming more hesitant. "I do have some experience with this." She sighed. "I was considering asking some of the students who are healers with magic to talk with her. The worst part seems to be the incipient brain damage, though. I don't know how much can be done for that by any discipline."

"There are some amazing healers around. If Triela doesn't mind magic..." Martha trailed off, sighing softly. "There really is nothing to help brain damage, not right now. Maybe if we were further in the future."

"I don't think she will, but-- part of the problems is she won't, or can't, agree to any blood tests. And her guardians won't give permission for it either." Scully's lips thinned. "So there's no way to know what's already in her system, and what effect it's having. Just rough guesses based on how it works." She looked at Martha. "Can we go further in the future? This is ten years into my future..."

"On this island, who knows. We could wake up in another time altogether," Martha said, glaring a little, although her anger wasn't really directed at Scully. "I don't know how the school can let some of you go home to guardians who want to hurt you. It's ridiculous and just wrong."

Scully sighed, resting a hip against one of the cabinets. "I can't disagree. But some of my classmates would be ... offended, I think." She thought of Rosalind, and Ino. "Or claim they can handle it. And if they won't ask for help, what can we do?" She gave Triela's file a slightly bitter look. "Aside from try to take away some of the pain." She studied Martha, then asked on impulse, "What did you do before this?"

"We can only do what we can get away with, unfortunately," Martha said, studying Scully in return. "Before this? I was a doctor in a regular hospital, and then I became a traveler of time and space with The Doctor, who teaches here. Well, not the same one who teaches here, he was a bit different then, but--he's a bit of a difficult person to describe."

Scully blinked a bit, then nodded, even though she wasn't certain she understood. "I, uh." The pink was back, so she just said straight out, "I've been de-aged. I'm a medical examiner, or I was. But I've deal with enough live patients to know what I'm doing, especially in pathology or trauma." She shook her head. "I'm no psychiatrist, psychologist, or neuro specialist. I don't suppose that was your specialty?"

Martha had heard a lot of stories in her time here, but de-aging was still enough to get a bit of a stare out of her. At least she felt better about Scully being so smart at her age now. "I hadn't picked a specialty yet. I was barely done with my rotations when I left. But neurology probably wasn't going to be it. Still, I'm going to look over the file and see if I have any different ideas. A fresh set of eyes can't hurt, right?"

Scully nodded slowly, wishing for the entire medical team of Johns Hopkins, but Triela wouldn't have agreed to that, probably. "That's what I was hoping for, really. And passing it along to anyone else working here. I want to believe Triela's primary specialists are wrong, but there's precedent." She was quiet. "Maybe we can at least buy her time until something else is found."

"Time that isn't painful, and is longer than she's expecting. That would be wonderful," Martha said. A little optimism had to help, didn't it? "Will you keep me updated on what you find?"

"Definitely. I'm seeing her again in a week. And talking to other people." Scully gave her a half-smile. "Let me know if you find out anything either. There's still some time."

"Plenty of time," Martha said. If there was one thing she'd learned with the Doctor, it was to keep a positive outlook no matter how dire the situation was.
