The Clinic, Thursday (7/22)

Scully's day was full of small distractions - a case of bad sun exposure, a broken finger, and now, her first gremlin bite.

After ten minutes of trying to get the patient to sit still, though, she was just going to wait out the latest rendition of "I Will Survive" before getting a look at what she was pretty sure was going to be a monster of a bite. At least judging by the platform shoes and that wig.

Asuna walked into the clinic and waved at the nurses. "Hello!"

The nurses waved back from their spot around Soap Dish, and pointed at the lab. "Mini-doc is back there."

"Thanks," Asuna said, trying to stifle the giggle at the 'mini-doc' thing. She moved into the clinic looking for the lab and calling out, "Any mini doctors here?"

"I heard that!" Scully called back, then turned around to smile at Asuna. "Hi! I didn't expect to see you in here so quickly. You're not hurt, are you?"

Asuna grinned, "Nope. Just curious about the, uh, heart paddle thingy."

"You want a demonstration?" Scully said, amused. "I need to get one of the practice dummies again." She raised her voice. "Unless there's any volunteers out there?"

"NO!"

She snorted. "Fine. Dora the dummy it is."

Asuna laughed, "I think the nurses are a little bit afraid of you."

Scully smirked, dragging Dora out to put her on the table. "I think they mock me behind my back." She made Dora wave at Asuna. "They'll be sorry." She pulled the AED out of the closet and plugged it in. "So, you want to know how to zap someone with enough voltage to re-set their heart?"

"I do!" Asuna said with a little more excitement than necessary. Then looked at Dora the dummy, "Sorry about this, Dora-chan."

"She's tough, she can take it." Scully turned on the AED and rubbed the paddles together, then carefully attached them. "Okay, you see how the display shows the device is looking for a rhythm? It's not going to find one, since Dora is heartless." She patted the dummy's head. "Sadly. Anyway, I'll manually set it to the first rhythm it accepts." She flicked a switch, and the display lit up with a tachycardia rhythm. "Now, hold the panels in place, when I hit the button."

Asuna did as Scully told her to, holding on to the panels. Most of what Scully said went over her head but maybe the demonstration would clear it up. "Okay."

A little robot voice on the AED said, "CLEAR." And then sent a bolt of electricity through the pads.

Scully pointed to the display. "And here's where Dora's new heart rhythm would show up, if she had one."

"ADDITIONAL SHOCK REQUIRED," insisted the unit.

"Oooh." She lifted up the paddles, "Let's do it again! The AED thing said so!"

Yes, enjoying herself too much.

Scully laughed, and hit the re-set button. "Here's the second rhythm it looks for. Okay, now remember; heart, ribcage. Got it?" She checked where Asuna had the paddles placed. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/Defib_electrode_placement.JPG)"

She looked down and repositioned the paddles. "Got it! Alright, hit me!" She stopped then added, "Well, technically, hit Dora-chan."

"Brace yourself, Dora."

Zzzzap! "And that's about it. It's really very simple," Scully said, sitting back with a smile.

"REPEAT OPERATION."

"Coool!" She exclaimed as the paddles did their thing again. "This is a cool gizmo!"

She raised her eyebrows at the AED's words: "Um, although, a little blood thirsty. Should I be worried?"

Scully patted it. "No, no. It's just confused because Dora still doesn't have a heartbeat." She flipped off the switch, looking amused. "Remember to check the chest of any *real* patients for anything metal first, too. Like underwires."

There was probably a story there.

Asuna winced, "I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone."

"Exactly." Scully packed up the AED and put it back in its cabinet. Dora she propped up in a chair, patting her on the head. "So, are you interested in medicine, or just shocky things?"

"Well, my friends and I tend to get into weird situations and so, I thought it would be good to learn some medical things," then grinned, "Also, I do like shocky things!"
