Martha had been very grateful for the quiet of the clinic yesterday. They hadn't had many zombies come to try to get in - the nurses had been quite fierce, and Martha could only imagine that word had spread - and the lack of patients had made Martha start to wonder if they'd get through this whole thing with everyone being all right. It was amazing that she still had some optimism left in her, but there it was.

"Worse than Eriadu." She gave him a hesitant smile and headed back out into the hallway. "Hopefully I can find my lightsaber under all that gunk somewhere . . . except I'm starting to think building a new one would be more fun."

"Definitely more hygienic," he replied.

"But I liked that one," Tahiri said with a tiny sigh. There were definite sentimental attachments there.

"We can go looking for it tomorrow?" he suggested.

"If I even wake up. I've barely slept since Wednesday," Tahiri admitted sheepishly. "I want to, though. Find it, I mean."

Ben hadn't slept in a lot longer. Bad things happened when he closed his eyes, so he'd stopped doing it.

"You'd miss Master Atreides' class?" he teased.

And if Tahiri knew that she'd be even more worried.

"Zombies aren't good enough reason?" she asked, mostly joking. Because she honestly didn't want to miss it.

"Around here?" He almost smiled. "Probably not."

"You're probably right," Tahiri conceded. "Come on, let's get back to the dorms before all the cold water's gone too."

"Ugh," he said with a little shudder. "I'll forget what color my hair's supposed to be."

"I'll remember for you," she suggested. "And Ben? Thanks."

"I wasn't going to leave you out there," Ben replied, blushing under the gunk.

Tahiri started to lean in toward him, hesitantly. "I know, hero boy, but thanks anyway."

Ben chewed on his lower lip--bad move--but didn't stop her from coming closer.

She'd been about to kiss him when she noticed, and forced down the flash of confusion. "It's been a long weekend," she said instead, not moving away just yet.

"It's been a long month," he sighed, letting his head rest against hers for just a second.

Tahiri reached up to put a hand lightly on his arm. "Have we earned a break yet?"

Ben didn't flinch, but it had taken a lot of effort. "I'd hope so, but I came back from a war to a zombie invasion."

"You deserve a break, at least," Tahiri said heatedly as she started heading down the hall again.

"I think I'm better off moving," Ben said with a shrug.

Mostly because stopping would mean thinking and thinking was bad.

"Yeah, well." Tahiri stared down at the floor in front of her as she walked. "I miss the you who didn't keep moving away from me."

Ben needed to remember to wipe the nasty from his mouth if he was going to keep biting his lip.

He didn't bother denying it, though. There wasn't a point. "I'm working on it," he said. "Home was...bad."

Seriously, there were better places to do this, but like Tahiri cared. "I know," she said quietly, trying to look him in the eyes.

He couldn't quite do that as he shook his head. "Nanovirus wiping out Tenel Ka's family bad," he said, even though that was hardly the worst thing that had happened.

"It's more than that, Ben," Tahiri said stubbornly. "I get close to you, you pull back so fast you practically jump into hyperspace. You're locked down tighter than a Hutt's fortress. And I don't see the connection there."
