FTEC, Wednesday [12/17]

Martha was already well into the holiday spirit, but that didn't stop her from getting even more amused by the egg nog coming out of the faucets in the clinic. She was being careful to not enjoy too much of it in one sitting, and hoping that they wouldn't need a lot of water for anything before the faucets were fixed.

Mmmm, egg nog.

"Enough for two?" He had a habit of just suddenly being there, leaning against something, hands in pockets.

Martha was almost used to that, but still not quite. "There's plenty, if you'd like some," she offered.

"Is it spiked?" he asked, pushing himself away from the wall to head over to Martha. He sniffed the air, as if that would tell him if the eggnog had a punch to it or not.

"It tastes like it, yeah," she said. "That's why I'm only having a little now. You, on the other hand, can have as much as you want."

"Better not. TARDIS controls and alcohol don't mix. Not that it'll affect me, well, much, but it's nearly Christmas here. I don't have a very good track record with Christmas."

"Are you taking the TARDIS out for a spin then?" she asked. "Or are you going to see if this place changes your track record? I think it could. It's been a pretty nice Christmas season so far."

He straightened and his expression sobered. "I'm off."

Martha had a feeling she knew what he meant, but she still had to ask. "Until Christmas is over?"

"I'm not coming back," he admitted. "Well, not planning on it. Well, not in the foreseeable future, or past, or present really. You know how it is. I've got you to catch up, don't I? Can't waste my time around here, moping when there's things to see, people to meet, worlds to save. I'm sorry you can't come."

"I'm sorry too," Martha said sincerely. "I know you have things to do, but that doesn't mean I wasn't hoping we could keep you here a bit longer. You will be careful, won't you? As careful as you ever are, at least?"

"You know me," he said, looking a little like a boy losing a friend. "Always careful. Plus," he said, trying to be chipper. "It's not goodbye. I'll see you before you see me, but it's not goodbye."

She knew he was right about that, which was why she wasn't going to get sniffly at all, really. "It never really is with you, is it?" she said. "You'd better take care of yourself between now and when I see you again then."

"When you see me or when I see you?" he grinned.

"Whichever one comes first for you," Martha replied.

"Next time I see you post-Fandom, let me know that I've caught up with you? It's a headache trying to keep track of whether I'm behind or not."

"I will, I promise." Unable to stop herself any longer, Martha went to try to give him a hug. "Oh, I'm going to miss you."

The Doctor met Martha's hug with one of his own, the face over her shoulder sad. "Until next time," he promised. "Look after this lot. They're a handful."

It's eggy and noggy!

Confession time: I've never actually had egg nog.
