FTEC, Friday

Ronan was a little upset at missing the Parents Weekend picnic, but not too terribly so; after all, he wasn't aware of any guests coming to visit. So, he set himself up at the desk in the clinic, ready for anyone who needed to come in for treatment, or even just to check out the facilities.

Where Ronan sat, ready and waiting. ... Or, well, reading. But he was still ready for anyone who came in.

"So I come all this way," came a voice from the front door, "and you're not even there at the picnic. I think you're playing sister favorites."

And that? Would be Ronan staring in complete and utter disbelief.

"Dairine?"

She rolled her eyes.

"Well, I'm not Dark Helmet, anyway."

Which prompted a groan. "Powers, are you still on about the Space Battles stuff?"

But the groan quickly morphed into a grin. "C'mere," he said, getting out from behind the desk. "How've you been? It's been far too long."

She trotted forward for a hug before looking up.

"What's wrong with Space Battles?" she asked rather seriously.

"And I'm... about the same. Still working on things. And school, you know. Stuff."

"Nothing's wrong with it, exactly," Ronan said, rolling his eyes even as he hugged her. "But it's... y'know." He shrugged. "It's Space Battles."

He nodded. "Still no luck, then?" he asked. "He's out there, somewhere," Ronan added. "I believe that as much as you do." He quirked a bit of a smile. "Oh, I mentioned that Fandom is astahfrith, right?"

"I've heard," she told him with a nod.

"And no luck, no."

She shook that off, however, because there was no way she wanted to spend the weekend thinking about Roshaun. Because then it would not be a fun weekend at all.

"...and Space Battles is Space Battles."

Totally different emphasis.

"Exactly," Ronan replied, with a grin. "It's Space Battles."

There, that was solved.

"Anyway, yeah," he added. "No need to worry about using wizardry while you're here. You might find, too, that... You won't be any stronger? But what you can do, I find, comes maybe a little bit easier. So, I mean, don't go crazy, but..."

She leaned over and raised one eyebrow as she looked him up and down.

"Hmmm, too tall."

He wasn't going to ask. He wasn't going to ask. He wasn't going to ask.

"... Too tall?"

"To be my sister," she finished with a snort.

"Come on now, Ronan. I know how to handle myself."

Ronan couldn't help but grin at that. "Powers help us," he invoked. "One Nita is enough."

She laughed.

"Well, yeah. Though it'd be better if she came with a mute button sometimes."

A sentiment her sister had expressed about her more than once.

"What're you doing here when there's a picnic and free food?"

Ronan raised an eyebrow. "Uh, I work here," he said. "There are a few student aides." He paused. "I think all of us right now are healers, although we had one who was more focused on the science-side of things. She graduated, though."

"And? Why're you working today? I can't believe you'd think that no one would come to see you."

"Because it's my day to work," Ronan said. "With all the new people in town, I'm hardly going to leave it to the nurses, am I?" He shrugged. "It's not fair to the nurses. Besides which," he added, in the Speech, "it's not that I thought no one would come, it's just that I thought no one was coming. There's a difference there."

"Well, I'm here," she said, looking a little bored as she pulled her manual (http://www.youngwizards.com/The-Wizpod-Touch).

"I can read if you're busy. Or hang out in this town, see what's up."

"... Is that your manual now?" Ronan asked. "I hadn't seen the newer ones." He eyed it, covetously. "... I swear, you almost make me wish I wasn't using the Knowledge."

"Everything I need is a touch away," she said, "but yours is in your head.

"...but I can watch Space Battles on mine. So fair trade."

"... Sure," Ronan retorted, with his best grin, "but why would you want to?"

That got a flat look.

"You are so silly sometimes, I don't even know what to do with you."

"Do you have anything digestible to read around here?" asked Sker'ret by way of greeting, three or four eyestalks swiveling in Ronan's direction as he entered. Don't mind the giant centipede in the clinic, really. "Highlights for Children isn't all that satisfying, in my opinion."

"Oh, sure, Sker'ret," Ronan said. "There's some old issues of Scientific American, if you're looking for something -- SKER'RET." He grinned, and practically bounded around the desk. "Hi! How are you? I didn't know you were coming!"

Sker'ret clicked his mandibles in amusement. "Well, it's not exactly as if it was a long, boring trip, is it?"

"I should hope not," Ronan said, laughing. "It's great to see you, you big bug. How're the Crossings doing?"

Sker'ret surreptitiously reached over to snag a brochure about STDs (not having actually read its title yet) and nibbled on it for a moment before grimacing in distaste and replying.

"Very busy," he said cheerfully, and to take the taste away scarfed down the front page of the USA Today entertainment section. Mmmm, junk food. "Satisfying work though."

"And your honored ancestor?" Ronan asked. "Everything going well there?"

He could still remember, right after the events with the Pullulus, how the Stationmaster had been... not himself. Last he'd heard, the stationmaster was recovered, but... One wondered. And worried.

Sker'ret made a fairly neutral sound. "Going well, yes. If still a little awkward."

Ronan made an answering neutral, non-committal sound. "I thought that might be the case," he said. "Well, as long as things are running smoothly..." He grinned.

"I am so glad you're here. Have you seen Dairine yet? She's here, too."

"Is she?" A half dozen of Sker'ret's eyestalks perked up at that. "I'll have to find her, then. How is she doing?"

"She seems... well." Ronan shrugged. "As well as can be expected. She's still looking for him."

A little of the perk went out of the eyestalks at that. "No luck yet, I take it," Sker'ret said quietly.

Ronan shook his head. "He's out there; I believe it, too. But she's had no luck, no."

"We've had no word at the Crossings," Sker'ret said regretfully. "I've been trying to keep an eye out."

Beat.

"Or several."

"I'm sure she appreciates it, Sker'," Ronan said, smiling softly. "... But that's enough depressing talk. How's life been for you, other than working at the Crossings?"

"Different from how it was before," Sker'ret said simply. He didn't think he needed to elaborate; words being what they were for wizards, and shared experiences being what they were, his meaning might be very clear.

Where there are nurses for great modding-ness!

I'm around all day, but may be a little bit slow-ish at times. Not working, either, but I'm heading out this evening.
