Martha was around!

Romeo came in after his literature class, right around lunchtime, and paused at the front desk. His shoulder had been feeling better, and he hoped to get permission to take the arm out of the sling.

"Hello?"

"Hello there," Martha said, smiling and eyeing the sling. "How can I help you?"

He held up his arm a little, biting his lip so he wouldn't grimace. Moving that shoulder still hurt. "This was broken by a gunshot wound two weeks ago Saturday," he explained. "I'm Romeo Montague, I should have a chart. But a friend has given me potions, and I've been resting it, and I hoped to have permission to take it out of the sling."

Martha went over to where they'd been storing the files, and flipped through them until she found Romeo's. "Ah, here you are," she said. "You said your friend's been giving you potions? Of what sort?"

He shook his head. "They taste awful and she says they'll help, that's as much as I know," Romeo confided. "But it feels like they help. They're from her world, not mine."

Romeo could probably work on asking more questions about what he was putting into his body.

"I'm still trying to get used to the different kinds of healing people do around here," Martha said, leading Romeo into one of the exam rooms ~~which I'm going to be lazy and not make OCD for~~. "Are you still in much pain?"

Romeo hopped up on the exam table, a little awkwardly because he had to lever his weight one-handed. "Not as much as it was," he said. "It still bothers me if I sleep oddly, but I got dressed this morning without much pain."

He smiled slightly, placing her accent. "I'm not used to the magic either. Are you English?"

"It'll probably still bother you until it's fully healed, but being able to dress yourself is a good sign." She touched his shoulder gently, seeing how the muscles felt. "And yes, I am. I've seen some strange things in my time, but no place where the strangeness varied as much as it does here."

He flexed his arm slightly under her fingers, letting her move it as she needed to. It hurt, but not as badly as he had feared.

"There are so many different worlds here," he commented, to keep his mind off it. "Before January I would have told you there was only one."

The flexing and mobility was a very good sign too, and she made a note of that on his chart. "I would have said the same thing a few years ago. Then I got to do some traveling, and...you'd be amazed what's out there."

"I can believe that," Romeo answered. "Would this place even be among the oddest you've seen?"

He wondered what she was writing down, but didn't try to look at the chart.

"It's certainly in the top five, just for the sheer number of different kinds of weirdness here," Martha said, checking him out for a few more moments before taking a step back. "All right, you can keep your sling off if you want. Try to move your arm around some so it won't get more stiff, but don't do anything strenuous until the pain really stops. If things get worse, come back here." Martha smiled. "And if you could try not to get shot again, that would be ideal."

"I don't think I should like to see your number one," Romeo decided. "I'll take care with it, and I've no plans to be on the wrong end of a gun again."

He stretched his arm, enjoying having the freedom. "Thank you, doctor."

"You're very welcome," she said. "As impolite as it sounds, I hope I won't be seeing you again."

"And I hope that if I see you again, it's outside the clinic walls," Romeo returned, already off the table and preparing to leave the exam room.

"I'd like that much better," Martha said, giving him a little wave to send him off.

He couldn't go back to Serenity, not until he knew more about River. On the other hand he needed something to do. So Simon headed towards the clinic, hoping that perhaps he could be of help. There was usually need for doctors.

Martha glanced up when she heard someone come in, and gave the man a smile. "Hi there. How can I help you?"

Simon glanced around the room then at the woman. "I've just arrived in Fandom and it looks like I'll be staying for a while," he said. "I'm a doctor. I just wanted to see if I could be of any help here."

Martha lit up at that. "Why yes, you certainly can be. I'm Martha Jones, it's very nice to meet you."

Clearly happy to hear that, he said: "Simon Tam, nice to meet you too."

"You said you're a doctor? As in, a medically trained doctor?" Martha asked. "It's just, we have a lot of healers and a lot of students who are learning, but I'm the only trained doctor and it would be amazing to have another."

Smiling a little, Simon replied: "Yes, I worked as a trauma surgeon on Osiris." He paused. "Although I've been travelling for a few years. Patching people up on a small spaceship. Does it get busy here?" The island might seem small and peaceful, but he remembered River's stories.

Martha might not have been familiar with where he was talking about, but the description was even more than she'd hoped for. "Um, not terribly busy? It was quiet for a while, and then we had some...unexpected visitors who weren't exactly welcome, and things got a bit rough. But everyone's all right, and now it's quiet again. So, it's sort of on and off. Busy enough that you won't get bored."

The smile widened. "So anything in particular you need help with?"

"Well, I've got two weekly shifts that need covering, Sundays and today," Martha said. "Are you available either of those days? If not, I'm sure we can work something out. It's a pretty small town, to be honest. We just need someone more than the nurses hanging about in case there's a real problem."

"Thursdays would suit ~~the mun~~ me." He paused. "I'm happy to be of help."

"Thursdays it is then. Thank you so much!" Martha said excitedly.

"I came here looking for my sister," he told her. "It turns out she has been kidnapped. I have to find out where she's been taken."

Odds were, Martha was still around.

No world ending!
