FTEC -- August 03 -- Sunday.

When Adah came in for her clinic shift in the afternoon part of the day, she had a brief and fleeting thought of doing something cute like offering cootie shots for all the kids, but then she remembered that she disliked children more than she liked sticking needles into things, which was kind of impressive. So she just settled behind the desk, reading up on childhood psychiatric disorders, because she had a feeling that it wouldn't take long to watch these adults turned children and spot them out, considering what a lot of these children were like as adults.

A little boy wandered in, hobbling a little, a dog trailing after him. "Hi. I has an owie."

"I hurteds my ankle. I fell and it went owie."

The dog calmly sat down, merely pricking its ears up in interest.

"Uh-huh," he nodded. An exam room probably would have made him uncomfortable, all things considered. People stuck other people in there and left them alone for a long time. He didn't like that idea, though he wasn't entirely sure why.

"It really hurts," he whined just a little.

Of course, to an eight year-old probably every little scrape hurt like a major injury in the right company.

"O..kay." He sounded very unsure, as if he didn't want to go to any room, but she seemed nice enough.

He looked across his shoulder to the dog. "You...uh," he paused for a bit, as if he was trying to think of something, "stay here, 'kay?"

The dog lay down near the desk, head on its paws as it watched them walk away.

"Okay," he replied, voice a tad shaky. It was a cold room, and the table seemed far too big.

He took his time climbing up, trying not to hurt his ankle much by doing so, but he couldn't help but bump it a little as he finally got on.

"HM," he replied. "A girl called me Murdock yesterday, but tha's jus' my last name." And he didn't even mind the 'sweetie' part, though usually he thought such things icky. She was nice and if she could make his owie go away, he'd let her call him anything she wanted.

"What's yours?"

"'Kay," he nodded. He tilted his head at her a little, brows squishing a bit in curiosity. "Do you have an owie too?" He'd noticed the slight look on her face, not to the mention the limp he'd seen earlier.

He didn't resist her handling of his foot. It wasn't painful, until...

"Ouch!"

Even if he had been trying to play tough, he couldn't have covered that up. It hurt when she moved his ankle that way. "That hurt," he said, voice quivering. "Can you..." that wasn't a wee sniffle, really, "make it go away?"

"It will?" He bent over a bit to peer down at his ankle, then glanced back up at her, "I can still play tho, right? Like onna a swing or somethin'?"

It would so stink to be stuck not being able to play. He didn't like that idea. He liked playing!

"Do you like to play, Adah?"

He made a face at the 'read a book' part. Booor-ing! Who wanted to do that? But he nodded anyway. "'Kay. I will. I don' want it to hurts no more." He was quite serious about that. Hurts were no fun at all.

"You're nice," he blurted out suddenly, "I like you."

"But I meant it," he replied very serious-like. "I do like you!" Then he pouted a bit. "Awww, do I gotta? Those things are no fun."

"I can do it!" he assured her. "Imma big kid. I'm eight!" he grinned at her. "An' I will. I don' wanna have more owie." He was quite serious sounding about that too.

Though he wouldn't have minded seeing Adah again, he didn't want to have to come back to the clinic with its cold rooms, either.

"Nuthin' wrong wit' it t'all," he agreed, nodding.

"Oooh!" he grinned happily, clapping his hands a little. "Yes please!" He studied the bag carefully, brows furrowing a touch as he looked over the contents. "Which one..." Very serious study here. So many choices! "I'll take..." he reached in and snagged a green one, "this one! Thank you, Adah!"

Cocking his head a little, he looked at her. "Are you gonna have one too?"

He grinned. "I won' tell. Promise!" He made a little 'x' on his chest. "Cross my heart or hope to die."

Geesh, why did these kids' rhymes have to be so morbid?

Mohinder stood at the othe side of the desk, frowning as he tried to read the long upside-down words on the girl's text. "Is it a good book?"

"No problemos, mucho," he grinned. "I heards that onna TV one time." really, no idea how/where it came from canonically He carefully climbed down off the table and slowly began to move. "See? I be real carefuls."

A little pout appeared. "I sorry. Does your owie hurt much?"

"Oh. I still sorry, Adah. Owies are bad. It's bad when people gets owies." He seemed very firm in this belief.

Might explain a few things later on.

"'Kay!" he grinned. He carefully made his way to the door, settling into a comfortable hobbling pattern. He turned and waved at her from the door. "Bye, Adah! I see yous again, 'kay?"

Mohinder wasn't sick or injured, but being smaller than usual hadn't left him any less curious. "There aren't many pictures," he said, not sure she was right about that.

"But how can you heal people if you don't know what it looks like when they're sick?" Mohinder persisted, Adah's disinterest remarkably familiar.
