FTEC, Tuesday, October 2 - Evening Shift

Wyatt arrived on time for his clinic shift, glad he hadn't had one to forget over the weekend. The clinic was empty and quiet. He idly rummaged through the front desk and found a copy of the latest issue of Maxim. Looking at hot scantily-clad chicks could be a good distraction from things on his mind. Maybe.

Ronan walked into the clinic, a bit distracted; he'd forgotten a book here on Sunday, after his shift, and was only now getting a chance to come by and pick it up.

"Hey," he said, smiling a bit, as he came in; he waved to Wyatt. "You haven't seen a copy of the seventh Barry Plodder book around, have you?"

"No, but I haven't looked around much," Wyatt said. He waved the magazine. "Got a little distracted."

Ronan chuckled a little as he saw what Wyatt was reading. "Understandably, then," he said, coming over to the desk. "Anyway, I'm Ronan; I've got the Sunday and Wednesday evening shifts. I'm pretty sure I left my book her on Sunday... You're Wyatt, right?"

"Yeah, Wyatt Halliwell," he said, setting the magazine down on the desk. "This is my only shift right now but I may pick up another one eventually."

Ronan nodded, as he frowned, wondering where he may have left the book. "Medical, or healer?" he asked, abruptly. "I mean, are you medically trained, or do you heal magically? Or some other way, I guess."

"Magically," Wyatt said, leaning back in his chair. "I'm part Whitelighter -- that's like an angel where I come from. Healing comes with the package."

"Part angel? That's pretty cool." Ronan grinned, leaning in a bit to check under the desk for his book -- perhaps a bit closer than he really should? "I'm a healer, too; a wizard, so, again, comes with the package. Sworn to guard growth and ease pain."

"Cool," Wyatt said. "My power works through my hands, how about yours?" He held up his hands for emphasis as he pushed the chair back a little to give Ronan more room.

"Words," Ronan said. "... Well, the Speech. It's the language with which the universe was spoken into being." He grinned. "Well, my universe, anyway. So everything responds to it, and can understand it. It's used for spells, 'cause the universe itself will listen to you if you're a wizard, so you can basically tell it to do what you want. Doesn't mean you always get that, and we're supposed to conserve energy whenever possible, so. ... And I'm rambling." His grin widened a bit. "So, you're good with your hands, huh?"

"I'm still learning," Wyatt admitted. "I haven't been doing it long. The first time was by accident. But I'm part witch as well as Whitelighter, so maybe you can give me some tips on how to do it better."

Ronan nodded. "I'd be glad to talk about it with you; I don't know if our powers are similar at all, but it could certainly be fun to find out. We don't exactly have 'witches' where I come from, but." He shrugged. "Still, there's probably some similarities. We should get together sometime, talk about it. Maybe over coffee?"

"I'm always up for a lesson," Wyatt said, grinning. "I need to learn better control."

Ronan nodded. "Sure, then! We should totally meet up." He grinned. "I could use some tips myself; I'm still learning more about the healing side of my powers. I was pretty much a front-line fighter for a while. Even had a legendary spear to show for it."

"Dude, really?" Wyatt said. "I've got a legendary sword. We're like twins or something!"

"Really? I've been interested in learning swordwork," Ronan replied. "I did a little bit in Whatever class over the summer, but hardly enough to count, and... yeah. Have much experience handling it?"

"I fooled around a bit back home," Wyatt said, leaning forward toward Ronan. "But I got more serious about it when I got here. I was pretty stiff and awkward at first, but I'm starting to get the moves down."

Ronan nodded, very, very carefully doing his best to keep his mind on the actual topic of conversation, rather than where that particular phrasing sent it. "That's great! So you'd know enough to show me a little, then?" he asked. "I mean, if I were to ask you for a demonstration of your skills, maybe some one-on-one tutorial."

It would help if he knew for sure that Wyatt was doing that on purpose, but for now he'd just try to play along.

"Sure!" Wyatt, aka Captain Oblivious, said. "It's always more fun when you're up against someone, instead of just doing it yourself."

"Perfect!" Ronan said, but then frowned for a moment. "... Oh!" He ran out of the room for a moment, back towards the exam rooms, returning with the book. "I'd had it with me when I went back to check one of the rooms, must have put it down... anyway." He grinned. "So, have a date for the Homecoming dance?"

Wyatt also frowned a little. "No," he admitted. "But I haven't asked anyone yet, either."

Ronan almost hesitated, but, hey. What's the worst that could happen.

"Yeah?" he said. "... Want to go? With me, I mean."

"With you?" Wyatt repeated. "You mean, like go stag together?"

Ronan blinked. ... Okay, apparently he really is that oblivious. "Well, no. I meant, like, together."

Okay, there was some heavy duty internal flailing going on. "Um, no offense, dude," Wyatt said hastily, "you're good looking and seem pretty cool and all, but I pretty much stick to girls."

"Oh!" Ronan took an involuntary step back, putting a little distance between them. "Sorry, I..." He laughed a little. "I guess I'm just used to guys at Fandom being... I dunno. I wonder sometimes if there isn't something in the water." He grinned. "But no, I totally understand."

He paused. "... Although you did just say 'pretty much'." He grinned, hoping to show that he was (mostly) joking. "Sure there's not a little flexibility there?"

Wyatt chuckled nervously. "It's not that I think it's wrong or anything, I've just never had any urge to go there myself."

Ronan nodded. "I totally understand that," he said. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable... So. Um. Totally platonic getting together to talk about powers." He smiled, trying to put Wyatt a little bit more at ease again.

"Yeah, that'd be cool," Wyatt said. "We can show each other our techniques. . . ." He realized what he was saying and winced, turning a little red.

Ronan managed to keep from laughing, but it was a very, very near thing. "I'd be happy to show you any techniques you want to see," he said, but then added, to keep it from being too innuendo-y, "If we can find a safe place for it, I'll even show you Callahan's Unfavorable Instigation."

"What's that?" Wyatt asked, cocking his head curiously.

"It's a spell a friend of mine came up with," Ronan said, his grin widening; his glee over this was quite obvious. "When she was offworld this one time. She was fighting these aliens who had some heavy-duty artillery, powered by miniature nuclear reactions? So she damped down the reaction from a distance, causing the containment to buckle, right? And then when she released the reaction, it blasted through the containment. Big explosion."

"That sounds really cool," Wyatt said, grinning back, because what boy didn't like high explosives? "Could come in really handy when dealing with demons."

"... Demons regularly have nuclear-power laser canons?"

Because, hey, you never know.

"Dude, they have game shows," Wyatt said. "You never know what they're going to whip out next."

"... Game shows?" Ronan asked, staring a little. He wasn't even going to touch the whipping out comment. "... I think your universe might be weirder than mine. And one of my best friends is a walking Christmas tree."

"A walking Christmas tree?" Wyatt said. "Okay, now that's something I haven't seen." He hadn't actually seen many demons, but looking at them in the Book of Shadows totally counted.

"Well, he's not technically a Christmas tree. He's a Demisiv -- sentient life on his planet evolved from coniferous trees." Ronan grinned. "With bright red berries. And he has a fondness for ballcaps."

"Does he get mad if you put Christmas presents under him?" Wyatt snickered.

"... I can't say that we've ever tried." Ronan grinned. "But now I rather want to."

"Just let me be there to see it," Wyatt said. Because it would have to be amusing.
