Christian frowned at the message the head nurse had left him. It wasn't like Dr. Wilson to not show up for his shifts. At least it had been quiet lately, and the nurse was qualified to handle things and had his pager in case of emergency. But if Wilson had abandoned his shifts to go on a weekend bender with his boyfriend, they were going to have to have words.

The doctor is in.

When Mary woke up that morning, she had a red, itchy rash all over her face and upper chest. With no idea what the heck it was, she headed straight for the clinic.

It's really too bad that she doesn't know just who received some of those messages that she left on Friday.

Christian looked up at Mary entered the clinic. "Well, hello," he said, smirking as he looked her over.

"Hi," said Mary. "This is driving me crazy. I'm hoping that you can give me something for this?" she asked, pointing at the rash visible above her low-cut top.

Christian studied Mary's cleavage. After a brief moment he actually noticed the rash. "Go for a roll in some poison ivy?" he asked. "That looks like an allergic reaction."

Poor innocent Mary didn't seem to realize where he was looking. "Honestly, I've been indoors all weekend, so I don't know what I could have come in contact with that caused this," she said.

"A new lotion?" Christian suggested. "Massage oil?"

Massage oil?

"No, I haven't used anything new," said Mary, looking at Christian warily.

"Well, why don't you come with me to exam one (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/344881.html?thread=8614705#t8614705) and I'll check you out," Christian said.

Empty!

Christian led Mary into the exam room. "Hop up there on the table and we'll take a look," he said.

Mary sat on the exam table and tried to resist the urge to scratch. It was driving her crazy. "Can't you just give me a cream or something for this?" she asked.

"An ointment will likely clear it up," Christian said, nodding as he put on a pair of gloves. "But I'll need to take a look at it first to make sure it's not something more serious."

"I hate to ask," said Mary, "but how could it be more serious?"

"It could be a simple allergic reaction or eczema," Christian said. "But if it's something like granuloma annulare, it could indicate diabetes or thyroid disease." He dipped his head to get a closer look at Mary's ~~cleavage~~ rash. "Are you sure haven't tried any new bubble bath or something recently, or spilled any cleaning chemicals on yourself? Any new clothes out of a material you haven't worn before?"

"I haven't had time for bubble bath. I just took over as the manager at the hotel and I've been doing some remodeling projects. It's been a lot of work and I've pretty much been doing it on my own," said Mary. "I did just finish re-painting the restaurant, though, but I don't remember spilling anything on myself."

"I know, I'm one of your tenants," Christian said. "I've seen you there, but I've never introduced myself. Doctor Christian Troy, plastic surgeon." He brushed his fingers against Mary's rash, but not too low, he wasn't that crass. Yet. "Is it tender to the touch? Or just itchy?"

"I knew you looked familiar. Mary Connell, hotel manager and former casino host," she said with a smile. "It's itchy, but not tender."

"It looks like it's just an allergic reaction to something, nothing serious," Christian said. "I can give you some ointment to put on it. If it doesn't clear up in a few days or starts getting worse, come back to get it checked again." He turned to rummage through a drawer for a tube of ointment. "Casino, huh? What made you leave that exciting life and come here?"

Mary was ready with her standard answer. "I've lived in Las Vegas all my life and I thought the change of pace would be good for me, plus I wasn't crazy about having to work with my high school sweetheart after he moved on with someone else."

She left out all that business with the abusive father who was dead because of her and that she was wanted by the Las Vegas police. Because really, who needs to know that?

"I can understand that," Christian said. "I had to get out of Miami for awhile." He didn't go into the details about that, either.

"This is prescription strength hydrocortisone cream," he went on. "It should help clear the rash up. I can apply some now, then you should put it on three times a day."

"Sounds like a plan," said Mary, smiling.

Christian grinned and squirted some of the ointment on his fingers, then began to gently rub it on Mary's rash. "So how does life in Fandom compare to Vegas?" he asked.

"It's a lot quieter," said Mary. "I never thought I would miss the sound of the slot machines. The nightlife certainly is... different. I think what surprised me the most is how people went out of their way to tell me how weird Fandom is. The first couple of times, I thought it was a joke."

Christian chuckled. "This place does take some getting used to. I thought the kids here were nuts when I first got here."

"Still, I'm glad I came here," said Mary. "I love being in charge of the hotel and doing my own thing. Everyone has been so nice to me, and I actually feel safe."

"So," Christian said, finishing applying the ointment, "would you like to go out to dinner sometime?"

Mary was a bit surprised, but she kept her composure. Dinner couldn't hurt, right? "Sure, that would be nice," she replied.

"What night's good for you?" Christian said, doing a mental victory dance.

"Thursday's good for me," said Mary. That left a day for the redness to go away, at least.

"Works for me," Christian said, grinning. He handed her the tube of ointment. "I'll pick you up in the lobby at 7:00?"

"I'll be waiting," said Mary, taking the ointment. The itching wasn't as bad as earlier, thankfully.

"And if you have any problems, don't hesitate to call me," Christian said, giving her a card with his number.

[Heading off to bed now, night! Mary can leave or we can wrap tomorrow.]
