Anders sighed and kissed her gently on the cheek. "And you didn't say anything? What are we gonna do with you, huh?"

"Be more upset if you're in a lot of pain and we couldn't help 'cause we didn't know," Anders pointed out. "Makes it harder to take care of you."

"It's our job to take care of each other," he corrected gently. Her breathing issues didn't go unnoticed, though, and he flagged the nurse down for some fresh painkillers for her.

"I get sad and upset when he's in pain," she agreed, closing her eyes against the pain as she heard the nurse come into the room.

"Mr. Anders, you should be in your own bed," the nurse chastised him. "Come on, back to bed with you."

Phoebe made a soft noise of protest and moved to say something, but her face went white as she gasped in pain. When she could speak again, she gave the nurse a plaintive look. "Please... I need him to stay here with me. Please."

If that didn't work, she'd start crying and call for her Sib.

Anders shook his head and wrapped an arm carefully, but tightly around her. "Not going anywhere," he insisted, looking stubbornly at the nurse until she relented. "Can we just give her something for the pain? I'm not gonna be over there watching her hurt if I can be here to hold her."

The nurse looked at the two young people and a small smile flitted across her features. They had been hurt enough and there was no reason that the young man should be forced to watch the girl he loved suffer from even more pain and fear.

"Of course I can give her something. And you can stay there with her if you make sure she gets rest and you do not keep her awake."

Phoebe looked at the nurse. "I rest much better when I'm being held. And... I came pretty close to losing both him and Cole. I need him right here with me right now."

The nurse nodded and left the room. After a few moments, she came back with a syringe and emptied it into the IV line going into Phoebe's arm. "There you go, dear. It should start making the pain disappear shortly. Now, get some rest or you will never heal."

Phoebe watched her leave and then relaxed a little against Anders again. "She was smart not to try to fight you on this," she murmured.

Anders kissed her cheek lightly. "Good thing, too, 'cause I was trying to think of medical reasons I should be allowed to stay here and I think she'd beat me if it came to that," he teased. "Now come on . . . I promised I'd make sure you got some rest, so try and sleep a little more, 'kay?"
