FTEC - Tuesday Evening Shift 4/24

After enjoying a quiet day on the mainland with Aziraphale, Wilson managed to get them both back home just in time to get from the causeway parking lot to the clinic for his shift.

Well, okay, Aziraphale's making sure that Virginia's finest were busy stopping speeders elsewhere had helped Wilson get them home in time to get from the causeway parking lot to the clinic for his shift.

Sending the angel on up to the house to put away their new purchases, Wilson talked with the nurse and caught up on the excitement over the weekend. As it seemed the last patient had been discharged that morning, Wilson and the nurse settled in to spend the evening cleaning and restocking the used exam rooms.

Of course this would be done in between any patients who stopped by and needed care.

After the sorority meeting, Marie decided to make a trip to town to talk to Dr. Wilson about her summer plans.

Biting her lower lip, Laura stepped into the clinic, glancing about. She swallowed and smoothed her hands down the front of her jacket. "Anyone home?" she asked, peering around.

Marie knocked lightly on the exam room door. "Hey, you busy?" she asked.

"Well, I wanted to talk to you about my plans for the summer," Marie said, finding a chair and sitting down. "Professor Xavier invited me to spend part of my summer at his school, working on controlling my powers and going through some training."

"School for mutants," Marie said. "I think I can learn a lot from Professor Xavier."

"Of course," Marie said. "And Professor Xavier said you're welcome to come and visit the school if you'd like," she added. "I'll only be gone for the first summer session here, so I'll be back in early July."

"That would be nice," Marie said, smiling shyly. "I'm probably going to leave sometime next week, but I want to at least attend graduation. I'll let you know for sure once I talk to Professor Xavier again."

A smile flickered across her lips. It did not, however, reach her eyes, which tended toward a nervous gleam. "I..." She laughed at herself, shaking her head as she pinched the bridge of her nose. "This is going to sound absolutely..." Pausing again, she looked back up at him. "I need a physical. Including a test for hGC levels."

Laura found she couldn't come out and say it. Not aloud. I need a pregnancy test. It should have been that simple. But for a woman who thought these years were behind her, it wasn't that simple.

Clearing her throat, Laura eased herself up onto the exam table, and removed her suit blazer. "Thank you," she said.

"Yes, that's fine." She bit her lower lip as a fit of the giggles tried to creep up on her. While this wasn't a debate, it was certainly a nerve-wracking experience. She managed to keep them at bay for now. There was, she reasoned, no sense getting worked up if there was nothing to get worked up about...right?

"I recently underwent a somewhat...unusual...treatment for breast cancer," she confessed. Her hand wrapped nervously around her glasses, though she didn't need them at the moment. "It was, for all intents and purposes, an experimental stem cell treatment, using cells taken from a human-cybernetic hybrid. It was considered a success; I was declared to be in complete remission, all traces of the cancer having disappeared.

"After the treatment, however, I noted small changes. My energy levels were back up, my skin toned up, my hair began to grow back, thicker and fuller. I attributed most of them to the fact that I was in better health again, that my body wasn't so busy fighting the cancer that it could divert energies elsewhere.

"I also, when I had some, ah, spotting a few weeks back, thought nothing of it. I knew that it's sometimes expected when transitioning into this phase of life.

"And then I had a nine year old child show up on my doorstep...three weeks after entering into a relationship with the girl's father." She looked to Wilson with a wry grin. "I thought it might be time to find out what other surprises this stem cell treatment may have in store for me."

Nodding, Laura followed his instructions. This was not a topic easily addressed for her, and she was appreciative of Dr. Wilson's professionalism. She gave a lopsided grin, attempting to lighten the mood. "I'm sure you say that to all the girls."

She took in the news as she wadded up the paper towels, having straightened her trousers and blouse. "I see. So, it is possible...?"

Laura exhaled, her knuckles going white over the paper towels in her hand. There was no other external sign of her discomfort as she wrangled with this prospect. After a long moment, she gave a snort of laughter. "I said we should start having babies, but I certainly didn't mean me."

She shook her head and regarded Wilson, tossing the towels into the waste basket. "I appreciate your seeing me, Doctor Wilson." She passed a glance over his shoulder at the door. Was the nurse ever coming back with those test results? The ultrasounds didn't seem to show anything, but Laura wanted as much confirmation as she could -- including the test results.

All presidential posturing aside, Laura visibly relaxed. She handed the sheet back to Dr. Wilson, to be included in her file. "Well, I see I'll have to take steps to ensure this isn't an issue." She smiled. "Feeling younger or not, I'm not sure I want to go through that again."

She allowed a laugh, shaking loose the dread that had settled around her as she had walked over. "I think I'll be okay," she replied. "Barely civilized we may be, we do have our own contraceptives."
