Long, lightweight trenchcoat fluttering about her ankles, Natalie entered the clinic, a small box tucked under her arm and her laptop case hanging off a shoulder. She smiled at Janet. "Quiet evening so far?"

"As quiet as can be," said Janet. She grinned at Natalie. "We have a patient, unfortunately. Rory's back there, but I can hear some indistinct voices, so I'm presuming she has company. How's your evening?"

"Not too bad." She gestured to the box. "A few things I want to try in the lab, and then probably head back home."

"Ooh, what are you trying?" asked Janet, looking curiously at the box.

"A couple of experimental suspensions," Natalie replied. "The foundation that supplies my research grant was able to get some samples from the pharmaceutical companies for me to work with in the lab." She shrugged. "Well, under the condition that we report the findings."

"That's one of the usual conditions of pharmaceutical companies, if I recall correctly," said Janet. "Are you excited to have some new toys to play with?"

She was ecstatic, actually, given what was in the little box. But she tried to keep that enthusiasm reined in. She wasn't sure, after all, if the treatment was going to work at all.

"Very," Natalie replied. Her eyes belied her external relative-calm.

Janet's eyes might have lit up at the mostly hidden excitement in Natalie's eyes, but all she did was smile. "Who doesn't love a good experimental suspension or two?" she asked. "It sounds thrilling." Or it would if Natalie ever mentioned any details.

"If it works? It will be." She grinned. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll pop back to the lab. Tap on the door if you need me."

Janet waved at Natalie. "See you later. And good luck."

Nat waved. "Thanks!"

Ami left earlier today, so this is empty.

Rory is, Janet hopes, resting comfortably. But if she needs anything, Janet's easily able to hear if Rory presses the call button.

Rory was beginning to wake up after a rather long nap this afternoon, feeling quite a bit improved. Of course, it wasn't hard to improve on 'concussed and bruised,' but still.

As she blinked awake, she took inventory of the room, and smiled weakly when she saw who was still there. "So I didn't imagine it. It was you."

"It was me," Anakin confirmed. "Welcome back."

"Hi. Sorry for scaring you," Rory said softly, giving him a soft smile. "Thanks for bringing me in."

"Of course," Anakin said, moving closer, then standing around a little uncomfortably. He scowled. "I couldn't find Crichton."

"He's not himself. John didn't do this," Rory said, biting her lip. "I mean, John did, but it wasn't John. He's possessed or something. He talked differently and acted bizarrely and wasn't John."

Anakin crossed his arms over his chest and glared, something very scary lighting up his eyes. "He hurt you. I don't care if he was possessed by the spirit of Earl the Homicidal Elephant. That's not acceptable."

Anakin had never been one to let consistency get in the way of a good rant.

"Calm down," Rory said, sighing. "He sounded kind of British. Maybe Rita Skeeter cast a spell on him from England, or something. All I know is that it wasn't John, even if it looked like him."

"I'm not going to calm down," Anakin snapped. "You can't see out of one eye. He didn't have the guts to show up for class, and Aeryn's not answering her phone."

He paced around the room, his cloak swooping out behind him. "If he hurt her, too, there aren't enough places in the universe for him to hide."

Rory threw her earbuds at him. "Listen to me," she said as loudly as she could, and then winced at the volume of her own voice.

More quietly, she continued, "I'm fine. I look awful," and at that, she looked very self-conscious, "but I'm fine. Aeryn can take care of herself."

Her worry over Aeryn wasn't that easy to get rid of, but she did believe that statement with all her heart.

Anakin stared at her, suddenly struck by how out of control he'd been.

His hands started trembling. He clamped them together and hoped she didn't notice.

"You don't look awful," he said, trying to get his voice back under control. Anyone else might have bought that he was fine.

Rory would know better.
