FTEC - Saturday Evening Shift [3/3]

The nurse had been a little concerned when 5pm came and went and Wilson didn't show up but since the clinic was quiet and she had his pager number, she didn't fret overly. A quiet night without a doctor to bother her was a blessing.

Too bad that in about an hour FHT the quiet night was going to be shattered and the clinic was going to find itself, very busy indeed.

Nadia came in under her own power, thank you very much, and sat down in one of the chairs in the lobby, compulsively flexing and wiggling her fingers and wrist, ignoring the occasional pangs of pain from the still injured muscles in her forearm and shoulder.

"I am never letting you out of my sight again," she told her hand.

Approaching Nadia, Natalie gave a bit of a smirk. "I sometimes talk to myself in the mirror, but I'm not sure I single out body parts," she said. She nodded toward the wrist and arm. "Would you like me to take a look at that?"

Nadia held out her arm to the doctor. "I think it needs a wrap or something. To make sure it stays on."

She shook her head. Reaching out, she took the wrist in her hands, gently manipulating it to check for tenderness, fractures, and the like. "Feels a little tight," she commented, "but not broken." She then moved her attention up the arm. "Let me know if this hurts."

It was moments like this that she wished she had specialized in orthopaedics, rather than pathology.

Nadia indicated it hurt a little along her forearm, then winced visibly when her arm was lifted. "I dislocated my shoulder again," she explained. "But I put it back in."

Natalie made a mental note of the wince...and the 'again'. "On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate the pain?" She lifted the arm once more, carefully and gently, with a rueful expression. It wasn't that she wanted to, but she did need to assess the damage.

"Fiv--ahhhhhh--six," she said sheepishly.

"Okay..." Turning and going to a stainless cabinet nearby, Natalie withdrew an elastic bandage and a shoulder brace. She flopped down on a stool and rolllllled back over to Nadia. Breaking the plastic on the bandage, she began wrapping the wrist. "I'm assuming you have some sort of anti-inflammatory -- ibuprofen? Naproxen? -- in your room?"

"Yeah. And I might have some left over other stuff from last time." Nadia was referring to the pills she'd gotten after the kidnapping thing, but the adrenalin was fading out and she was getting a bit . . . loopier.

"Good," she said, securing the bandage. "You're going to need it. If you find you don't have any, drop back in. I'll leave a note on your chart, so anyone on duty should be able to help you out."

Nat shifted a bit, helping Nadia into the shoulder brace. "And, for your own sake, take it easy for a few days; give the muscles a chance to heal up. Some gentle stretching would probably be okay, but no heavy lifting." She gave a wry smile. "Get someone else to carry your books if you have to."

Nadia nodded. "I know how it goes. How long should I keep it on, this time?"

"I know they're no fun, but I'd say at least two weeks. Longer, if it still seems weak when you take it off to change or shower," Nat replied. She rolled over and picked up a patient information form, quickly jotting down her notes and taking Nadia's information. "And then we'll have to see about some physical therapy to strengthen those muscles again, maybe keep it from happening so often? Because I know better than to expect any of you to stay out of trouble."

More than two weeks?

Ugh. And Walter was going to kill her for getting injured again.

Bah. Screw Walter. She'd tried letting him know they were going and he didn't answer his phone.

"Strengthening would be really good. Thanks."

She gave Nadia a small packet of ibuprofen. "Just in case," she said.

"And, because we don't have a therapist on the island, I'll make some phone calls and see if I can get some instructions for you." Glancing down, she made a note on the chart. "You'll need to come back in about two weeks from now, let someone take a look at that, okay?"

Nadia nodded again. "Okay. But my hand is okay? It's not going to fall off?"

Nat laughed. "Yes, it's fine. A little tender, no doubt, but it's firmly attached."

"Good. I don't want to see my wrist all stumpy like that, again. And if it falls off, I might not be able to forgive Aziraphale."

"Ah, so the angel was involved," she said. She shook her head. "I'm not sure I want to know." Giving a slight smile, she straightened. "I think you're good to go for now, if you'd like. Just make sure you stop in again, about two weeks from now."

Anders took a few minutes to dig out Bridge's phone and make a phone call (http://needsaparrot.livejournal.com/14930.html) before taking his best friend into the exam room.

Natalie rushed into the clinic, after having been handwavily called by the nurse. She'd mentioned that Dr. Wilson himself didn't look too great, not to mention the two he'd followed in -- one unconscious, and the other with blood spatter on his clothing. If it was going to be another busy night in the clinic, the nurse thought backup might be a good idea.

Slipping out of her trenchcoat and into her lab coat, she glanced about for the lanky oncologist. "Dr. Wilson?"
