Nadia came in backwards, walking quickly but carefully, holding the end of a blanket-stretcher with Cally lying injured on it. Bel carried the other end.
"A little . . . help?" she called, somewhat out of breath. "Please?"
"We found her like this," Bel said, gently lifting the blanket with Nadia so they could lie Cally down on the exam table. "Whoever did it was long gone. We got her here as quick as we could and tried not to move her more than we had to."
Nadia backed up as soon as they had Cally situated on the exam table, crossing her arms and reaching up to rub her neck. "Do you need me to do anything? Is there any way I can help?"
"We're not going to find out who did this until Cally heals," said Janet, checking Cally's pupils. "Nadia, thank you for the offer. If you could find some cloths and a basin of lukewarm water, please."
No concussion, it seemed, but possible facial fractures. They'd have to do a CT scan to be sure.
Nadia nodded, and as she headed out to find what Janet needed, paused next to Bel. "I can't be sure, but I think it might have been the same person who attacked Dr. Wilson. We'll figure it out." Then she hurried out, returning quickly with the cloths and water.
Bel warily watched Nadia as she passed. How would she know that? He'd have to keep an eye on her to make sure she didn't stumble across the truth somehow.
To Janet, he said, "Is she going to be all right?"
"I didn't think Dr. Wilson had been attacked on Fandom," said Janet. She quickly took care of prepping Cally to go under the CT scanner. "He wasn't just mugged?"
Nadia shook her head. "I don't know. But I have these prophetic dreams, and I saw Dr. Wilson get attacked and I saw Cally get attacked, and the dreams were really similar. All . . . flames and stuff." She brought the supplies over. "Does that mean anything to either of you?"
"Not to me," said Janet, shaking her head sharply. "I need to set up the CT scanner before I can tell anything more. Bel, can you lift Cally onto that bed over there?" Janet nodded in the direction of the scanner.
Nadia shook her head. "It might be a demon. But it wasn't fireballs. It was more like . . . fire everywhere. Especially the eyes. I couldn't see any features or anything, though. Just this big dark shape with flamey eyes, beating on her." She crossed and recrossed her arms. "It wouldn't be one of your old friends, would it? Out to get people you like?"
"I don't know," Bel said carefully. "Demons usually prefer a more direct approach. They'd be coming after me, not Cally." He shook his head. "I can have Phoebe check the Book of Shadows, though."
"Good idea." Nadia recrossed her arms again, then shoved her hands into her pockets, then rubbed her neck, then crossed her arms. "I should have been faster. Maybe I could have saved her. Or at least seen who did it."
"You can't second-guess yourself, Nadia," said Janet firmly. She turned away from the machine briefly. "You got her to the clinic so that we can heal her. Hopefully we can find out who did it once Cally wakes up. Lalala, wonder who that could be?"
"You did what you could," Bel agreed. "Now it's up to us to find out who it was and make sure they pay for it." He idly considered the possibility of killing Nadia and Janet right here...no, there were security cameras in the clinic, his presense was already recorded.
"Yeah. I guess," she said without enthusiasm. The focus and calm was starting to leave her now that Cally was somewhere where she'd get help, and there was a lump forming in her throat that got larger every time she looked in poor Cally's direction. "I should--I need to--I should just go. If you don't need anything else, Janet."
"She's going to be all right. I promise," said Janet, her voice soft as she looked over at Nadia. "I'll have her charts updated; you can stop by tomorrow and see how she's doing.
"Part of me doesn't want to argue that one very hard," said Janet. She met Bel's eyes squarely. "First Wilson, now Cally? Whoever this is, they're going to pay for doing this."
Bel didn't flinch. "They certainly will," Bel said. "Whoever is behind this." He glanced at Cally's still form. "I'll let you take care of her. I'll go take a look around and see what I can find."
Janet nodded. It's nearly my bedtime anyway. "Good," she said, too focused on Cally's injuries to notice any evasiveness. "Thank you for bringing her in."
