FTEC, Tuesday, January 2

Christian checked the exam rooms when he came in to open the clinic in the morning. He expected them to be empty and was surprised to find a patient -- even more so that it was Dr. Wilson. He felt cold as he looked over the chart. What the hell had happened? Abdominal stab wound, basilar skull fracture...severed finger?

Totally not having flashbacks of the Carver and Sean. Not at all.

Wilson had spent a quiet enough night in the clinic. Course, being in a coma meant you tended to stay quiet, as did having a tube down your throat feeding you oxygen.

The room was filled with the quiet sounds of the monitors and the hiss and whirl of the ventilator as it continued to breath for Wilson. The oncologist himself, remained peacefully still.

The figure perched on the edge of a chair next to the bed was equally still. Aziraphale leaned with his head on his arms, resting the upper half of his body on the bed next to Wilson's shoulder. He'd tucked away the wings at some point during the night, but his winter coat and sweater were still ripped and hung off his torso.

Despite that it seemed he might be asleep, he was aware of the barest movement or whisper of sound.

Marie caught the radio broadcast when she woke up and, upon hearing that Phale had taken Wilson to the clinic, made a phone call.

The chirp of his phone brought Aziraphale's head up with a jerk. Snatching the little cell out of his pocket, he blinked at it with a slight sense of puzzlement, and then answered the call.

"Yes?" he said, his voice soft and tired-sounding.

"It's Marie," she said. "I, um, heard something on the radio about Dr. Wilson being in the clinic. Is everything okay?"

Marie. Dear God, he should have called her. And Phoebe as well, and Bel...Blair, Lana...

Aziraphale rubbed his hand over his face. He didn't have the energy to call people, didn't know what to tell them.

"No, it isn't," he murmured. "James was attacked yesterday. He's...he'd hurt very badly."

Marie swallowed hard. "Is he... going to be okay?" she asked.

I don't know.

"It'll take some time," he admitted. "It's quite bad, Miss D'Ancanto. James is in a coma. I don't know what happened, but..."

Aziraphale's voice broke, and he was silent for a moment. "Come and visit him, please. I...I think having his friends near will help."

"Thank you," he murmured, his voice sincere if soft. "I think just...being with him and talking to him. That's supposed to help, isn't it? That's...I suppose it's all that can be done for now."

"I can definitely do that," Marie assured him. "I have to look for my school assigned little this afternoon, but I'll be down this evening."

"I'll be here," he assured Marie. No point in mentioning that Wilson would certainly be there as well. "I hope...everything goes well with your arrangements for the new term."

"Thanks. I'll see you later," Marie promised quietly before hanging up the phone.

"Thank you, my dear," Aziraphale murmured, closing the phone and slipping it back into his pocket. Then he lay his head on his arms again and went back to listening to the beating of Wilson's heart.
