Janet was trying to organize all the paperwork at the front desk, and also desperately thinking of good places to hide out on Thursday. This was a week that would hopefully go away very quickly.

The Doctor stepped through the front doors of the clinic and smirked. "You're none of the clinic staff I've met," he said.

Janet glanced up from the charts she was re-alphabetizing and shook her head. "I'd certainly remember if we'd met," she said. "I'm Dr. Janet Fraiser."

"Janet Frasier, fantastic," the Doctor said. "I am the Doctor. I should know right now if I'm going to have to explain the fact that my face is different and I suddenly have better taste in shoes. Do I?"

Janet leaned to the side and peered at the Doctor's shoes. "They are very nice," she said, then straightened up and studied the Doctor's face. "Wait, you're the Doctor? Didn't you teach physics here last year? Which means that, yes, you're going to have to explain that your face is different."

"Long story short, alien who can change faces, and the complicated bit is that it wasn't me who was here in the past but my future self who was here, so I don't actually know what I was really up to here," the Doctor said.

"Oh, is that all?" asked Janet. She grinned. "You know, given everything else that happens around here, having your future self arrive before your present self isn't all that big a deal. So what mechanism do you use to trigger a shape change? The physiology behind that must be fascinating." She paused, blushing faintly. "That might have been a slightly intrusive question."

"Well, the trigger is fatal circumstances," the Doctor said. "It's a full body regeneration in attempts to cheat death. Things just end up a little different afterwards."

"That makes sense." Janet's brows furrowed as the thought about the circumstances. "It sounds like your body rewrites the genetic code for your physiological makeup, along with healing itself, and even correcting potential mutations. I know I'd take a change in appearance over being dead."

Being a teenager again sucked, but it really was better than being dead.

"As would I. And have done, on several occassions," the Doctor said.

"That sounds unpleasant," said Janet. "You're not here because you're expecting to die again any time soon, are you?"

"Not at all," the Doctor said. "Fit as a fiddle, and not the double bass kind, me. Hearts beating fine, etcetera. I just apparently had my dates muddled up. Was hoping to see Doctor Lambert."

"Multiple hearts?" Janet blinked once. "I wasn't aware your circulatory system would be so complicated as to require a second heart. Four full chambers on that one? Increased blood volume? Uh, and yeah, Dr. Lambert's not on duty until Tuesday night."

"Ah, one day off," the Doctor said. "Yes, full four chambers and everything. I had Doctor Troy run some basic tests that I'm sure you could look at if you want a more professional account of it all."

"As long as you don't mind," said Janet, discreetly pulling the Doctor's chart out of the alphabetized files. "Non-human biology is a hobby of mine."

"Interesting hobby for a young girl," the Doctor said. "But a good one, I suppose. Curiosity is better for a lot more than cat killing, after all."

Just what Janet needed. A reminder that her birthday was Thursday. "I'm more of a dog person," she said. "Why wouldn't a someone like me be interested in alien biology? Human biology's been very exhaustively studied already, after all."

"Very true," the Doctor said. "Good to jump into a new field. Though I hope there's a market for the skills, out there."

"Given this place, do you really doubt I'll manage to find something?" asked Janet dryly. She propped her chin on her open palm and smiled wryly at the Doctor.

"Touche," the Doctor admitted. "I guess I'm used to the normal skepticism and governmental denial of the rest of this wonderful little planet."

"Skepticism can be healthy," said Janet. "Just as long as it doesn't get taken too far. Which can be said about everything, I'd guess."

"Quite true, quite true," the Doctor said. "Well, Miss Frasier, I don't want to waste any more of your valuable time, so unless you've got further curiosities, I think I'll be on my way."

"Probably nothing too interesting for a double-hearted, genetically fluid person like yourself," said Janet. "You seem far more interesting than me. Have a good night, and try not to come in as a patient. I'd hate to not recognize you the next time I see you."

"As would I," the Doctor said. "G'evening to you." He gave Janet a nod and headed out.

Janet waved and settled back in to get the paperwork finished up before her shift ended.
